Home schooling during recuperation?

cinnamon009, 17 July, 2014 at 13:25 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

As you may recall my youngest SD has scoliosis which needs operating on. The operation is quite tough with a rod being attached with screws to her spine. The recuperation will take months.

We were hoping her op would be soon, partly because of the pain she is in now and also so she misses just the start of school. We have just been told that it is unlikely her op will be before October and could be later. This coming year is her GCSE year so taking all that time off smack in the middle of the school year is going to be hard and she is already worried about her exams.

Until it's scheduled we don't know what the options are in terms of helping her with her schoolwork. Does anyone know what help might be offered? Will it just be someone sending round school books or will an actual teacher come round to home school her for the odd day until she can walk?

it also means she might miss our wedding so I'm keeping my fingers crossed she will at least be able to be in a wheelchair as we would be gutted not to have her there.

Send massive hugs to her and the rest of the family.

my youngest has just finished her G.C.S.Es but they have always sent homework via email and they have sent it back via email. Is this an option at your school?

Thanks everyone. The school have said each case is discussed individually and will be able to discuss further when an op date is set.

I'm worried that they will just send over the homework, which would not be anywhere near enough given she will be missing huge chunks of teaching. In which case we would need to pay for a private tutor and given everything else we are paying for in next six months need to factor that into our budget now as it would take priority. A private tutor for four months at GCSE level is not going to be cheap.

It's reassuring that you got tutoring covered Kochanski. Gives me hope it might be an option for us!

Hi there, big hugs for your daughter, that sounds super scary! I missed about 4 months of my GCSE year due to glandular fever and my school were great - they sent notes home with friends but also arranged one to one sessions for me with the teachers during PE/lunch/games/before or after school, once I was feeling up to coming back, which helped cover the teaching side of things that I had missed. Don't worry too much, it is in the schools interest to keep her up to speed with things, and I'm sure they will do everything they can to help you out. As for private tutoring, speaking from experience, I charge £25 ph but I know if I was asked to do something like this I would massively reduce my rate and come to an arrangement with the parents re costs. Hope everything gets sorted soon xxx

When I was doing my a-levels I got sick and needed 2 months out of school. I don't remember much by the way of tutoring support, but hopefully your school will be better for you on that front.

However, I do know that the school put in an application on my behalf to the exam boards for a special dispensation, so that if the school felt my exam results were significantly lower than the results my tutors would have predicted for me, that my grades could be reviewed with coursework and classroom performance taken into consideration. If that's still an option (my a levels were 22 years ago) it might go some way to ease the pressure on your daughter. Might be worth asking at the school whether they can do this.
