honest opinions needed...

emmyroo22, 30 March, 2009 at 13:32 Posted on Planning 0 17

Need some opinions, be as honest and brutal as you like, im a tough cookie!!!

we are still trying to decide on a venue and the overal theme/kind of day we actually want, we are probably going to have an early september wedding (so hopefully it'll be warm still) and i have been thinking i dont really want the traditional 'wedding breakfast ' with 3 courses etc mainly because i dont think people actually want a hot meal at 3pm on a warm sunny day, and also im trying to cut costs!!

so im trying to think of alternatives and i thought it'd be nice to have a ploughmans type lunch with a desert afterwards?? is this a bit wierd and will it look tacky/cheap?? i want everything else to be fairly traditional (getting wed in a church, white dress etc) but it will be a fairly small day (approx 60-70 guests) so i kinda feel like a full on dinner is a little unecessary and will be wasted because of the time of year?? anyway, im rambling, so opinions please, or other alternative ideas......

    Hi

I think people will still want something to eat - it's unlikely they would have eaten before the wedding itself and so will be starving by the time 3 pm comes around. We're having a full sit down in May which will probably be similar weather.

If you're looking to save some pennies - you could go for the option of a buffet so people have the choice of hot or cold food depending on the day - with the weather in this country you're not guaranteed a lovely warm day (sadly)

Perfect for a Summer wedding. I would prefer a Ploughmans lunch, a wedding we did last year was held in a community centre and they had a cold buffet style lunch with styrawberries & cream for dessert & it was perfect. The rest of the wedding was a Traditional wedding day as these pics show:

I don't think it's a weird idea, and I'm sure it's one that has probably been done before by other brides who have had a "country" style wedding.

We're having an Asian-style BBQ for our wedding breakfast, so meat, fish and salads.

I think the fact you have called it a ploughmans, makes it sound a bit crap!

if you had said a cold buffet with a selection of meats and salads, perhaps pasta etc, that would sound fine?

I think it sounds lovely - I would love that at a wedding! You could do it with a few different types of cheeses / cold meat to make it a bit more exotic. I love a brie ploughmans!

HA HA, your probably right, i couldn't think of any other way to describe it!!

i would like to have it served as a 'meal' rather than buffet style, so do you think it'll look a bit stingy? obviously they'd have a fair bit each, a few different types of cheese, hams, pickles, warm baguettes etc!!

i was racking my brain trying to think of something we could do as a starter that would go....but as yet im drawing a blank!!!

Hi I think that would be fine to have ploughmans lunch - we had the same dilema !! we are the 12th Sept

What we decied in the end was canapes at 2.30pm after church service and then a hot meal at 6pm which we felt would be more of a normal 'evening meal' however this does work out to be quite expensive !!

however my friend had this last july:

Afternoon tea at 3pm - tea, cakes, scones, mini sandwiches etc all served on fab platters(harrods style) bucks fizz etc then in the evening she had a hog roast for everyone I thought it worked really well esp as it was a hot day ! HTH

As a buffet type affair I think it would be great...but as a sit down meal I'm not so sure... I think you'd have to make it quite "wow" for your guests not to be disappointed. Not sure what type of venue you've got but have you asked them how they would present this? The last thing you want is them presenting a limp leaf of lettuce and a pickled onion!!

Why not ask them if they can produce a big platter for each table, that could sit in the middle (might have to think about not having centrepieces!) and people can help themselves? I went to a wedding once where they had anti pasti as the starter as a platter and it worked really well.

Personally for me it doesn't matter what time of year it is I'd still want a dinner so would be disappointed at a wedding to find cold meats etc.

Personally not matter what time of year, at a wedding i would expect a "proper" meal.

I personally think that for a summer wedding that sounds lovely. I think a really good idea would be to do it the buffet way and have cold meats, new potatoes, a bit of salad, cheeses and possibly a bit of pasta or something as Claires said, just for a bit of variety. I would actually prefer to eat that kind of food in the summer.

We are having similar food, but as a picnic as the wedding is in the middle of August. We are going to have cold poached salmon, which I think would work well as a starter. I don't think I would go to someone elses wedding expecting anything as it is the bride and groom's day and they should have what they want and not feel obliged to treat all their guests to a sit down meal.

I think it sounds great! I love that type of food mmmmmm!

How about a mini cheese platter on each table?

We are having a roof terrace BBQ for ours, as we prefer this type of things to the usual sit down meal.

I think you should do whatever you would prefer- you are still feeding your guests, so noone will go hungry

    xx

I think it's personal to the bride and groom, some people might decide to have a fry-up for their wedding breakfast, which I would be horrified to find at my own wedding! But I would go along with it happily if it was something they enjoyed =) We're having afternoon tea, because we are love that kind of food, and so do our immediate family. I think a 'ploughmans not ploughmans' sounds tasty! Can I come?! x

We are having a ploughmans, we did it for my grandad's 80th and it went down really really well. We are only having a small wedding, but either way, its our wedding. People are coming to see us to get married and confirm our love as it were, not to be fed by us.

We are self catering, which will help hugely on costs, not only that everything can be prepared in advance. So cold honey roasted ham, various cheeses, grapes, apples, quiches, fresh bread, pickles, chutneys.

As our dessert we are serving the cup cakes from our wedding cake.

Yes I admit its not going to cost to world. But its going to taste wonderful and we are going to be able to enjoy it too. The amount of brides who I have heard were unable to touch there meal at all, this way I can pick at what I like if the excitement combats my hungry.

I know that during the summer I'm normally not that hungry so a salad buffet might be a good idea although I am having a meal served at our wedding next August, only because I will be starving with not having much time to have anything to eat that morning as we are getting married at 1 and the meal isn't getting served to about 5.

A ploughman's lucnh sounds fine but I would defianately add in some pasta salads just for some added options ?

We're getting married at 4pm on 13th June, and are having a drinks reception with canapes. We're going to cut the cake and have that as pudding. Later on in the evening we're going to have either a hog roast or a buffet - I thought we'd decided on hog roast, but dp not so sure now!

I think your Ploughmans is a lovely idea, I'd be really happy to have that at a wedding as I don't like the feel of a big meal and then socialising/dancing. At the end of the day, it's your day. People are coming to see you get married - don't fret about what they think.

We were at a wedding on Friday and they served a roast - it was just too much and too heavy!
