Honest options about these cakes please- *flash*

Teal, 6 March, 2011 at 21:41 Posted on Planning 0 21

Am undecided whether to go down the fresh flower route, most probably orchids, or have a butterfly cake. The theme isnt specifically butterfly, although would match my place names. I'd have the butterflies in both emerald greens and silvers to match colours. Honest opinions or thoughts please. Its a 3 tier cake.

I think I prefer the cakes with the butterflies on them but I'm not sure why. I think they are just more appealing to the eye! x

I think both cakes are lovely but think the butterfly one is very eye catching and would definitley be a talking point

I prefer the orchids - partly because I love orchids but also because I think there's something slightly creepy about the butterflies!

I'm having orchids on mine, but I do like the look of the butterfly ones. They wouldn't go with our wedding at all, but I think they're fab-looking.

Are the butterflies edible... I think I'd be a bit freaked out if they were edible and I had one served on a plate next to the cake! But as decorations, I genuinely think they're fab, especially in the colours you described on a white cake... beautiful!

The butterflies in the pics arent edible, but I have seen rice paper ones that are. The colours arent as vivid though & not as much variety of shapes & sizes.

I plan to have orchids in the bouquet regardless of the cake design.

I thought this butterfly cake was scary & looks more like a swarm devouring the cake. If I go with butterlies, I'm having something more subtle!

I love the last cake. Everyone has flowers! I love butterflies and they can look beautiful if not too many of them plus can be done in your wedding colours to tie everything together. I'd have butterfiles if I had a choice but going abroad and my cake is rubbish lol! x

I much prefer the orchids. There's far too many butterflies on the other cakes. But if you like butterflies why not have an orchid cake with a couple of butterflies thrown on. x

I love all of them but my bias is towards butterflies as that's what we are having! I've only every seen cakes with flowers when we attend weddings so decided to be a bit different!

I think the butterfly one is more original, but I guess it goes with what fits it best with the rest of your wedding....I am making our cake and started off with designs for a full-on novelty one but then learnt how to make sugar flowers (and butterflies incidentally!) properly and so now want to do something a bit more 'formal'.... but not TOO formal!

Also if cost is a factor than just remember that the more time it takes to do something the more expensive it will be....if it was sugar flowers 'V' plastic butterflies then the sugar flowers would be more expensive and vice versa...

I was going to have fresh orchids if had flowers, not sugar. I looked into rice paper butterflies, but the colours werent as vidid & they didnt look as nice. Think I'll have a try at both, because mum is making the cake. She did cake decorating in the 70's so didnt want to pressure of sugar flowers and anything too tricky.
