Honeymoon

katecole, 27 November, 2012 at 21:01 Posted on Planning 0 6

We are getting married in August 2013 and are looking for inspiration for our honeymoon! We are were thinking of doing New York and then going on to the Caribbean, but having done abit of research on this, it seems it will be the hurricane season at this time of year in the Caribbean, has anyone ever visited the Caribbean at the beginning of September? How did you find it? Any other ideas of possible honeymoons would be greatly appreciated! Thank you xxx

I haven't personally but my parents were due to go the Caribbean before Katrina hit...they ended up going to Dubai in the end.

It's up to you if you take the risk. If there aren't any massive hurricanes, you might have a few showers but they go as soon as they appear.

Obviously if there are massive hurricanes, you may have to rearrange the honeymoon.

We have the same dilemma getting wed in August going on honeymoon in September. Really, really want to go to Jamaica or Mexico but worried also. So considering Thailand. There are some Caribbean islands that are not in the hurricane belt. Where in the Caribbean was you thinking?

We did exactly this. Our honeymoon was New York and Barbados. We went in August and I've been to Barbados in August once before and not had any problems. From what I understand Barbados tends to avoid hurricanes due to it's position so it's probably a safer option. It's also a fabulous place to visit.

    Hi Katecole,

I got engaged in the Carribean on 19th Sept this year. My oh and I went to St Lucia on 14th Sept for 14 nights. Tbh to go in hurricane season is at least 40% cheaper than dry season. The chances of a hurricane hitting are very small although possible. Hurricane Sandy hit in October, so we were lucky. We booked one night online after a few too many drinks, and the next day when I was looking into it a bit more and I saw it was wet season I was so annoyed. i read loads of forums but they all seemed to just say there was a chance of hurricane. Anyway we went and it was amazing, September is the hottest month of the year there and I mean hot, we had around 35 and above most days. The most common time for rain is early morning around 7 to 8 am and it did rain most mornings, but only for around 20 mins then the sun was out, and we just stayed in bed til it ended. However we had 2 afternoons when it rained for about an hour or two, although still hot and sunny and people were still in the pool and we just sat at our loungers under an umbrella it was quite nice actually. Then we had 1 day were there was a thunder storm and a massive downpour for about 2 hours, but again it passed and the sun wasnt far away. Even when it is wet or overcast its still really hot and theres loads to do at the resorts. If your hearts set on going I would say go for it but do expect some rain, but hopefully not as bad as you would imagine. Hope this helps x

To be honest, I would also not recommend New York at that time of year. it can be disgustingly hot and humid and also gets a lot of rain at that time of year. You don't usually get solid days of rain like in the UK, but it wouldn't be that unusual to get a torrential downpour every day for two weeks.

It's one thing to take your chances with the rain in the Carribean, but although a bad hurricane is fairly rare on a number of islans, even if it doesn't cause widespread damage to buildings for example, it could wipe out a good few days of your holiday with heavy wind and rain.

I'm sorry, I really don't mean to put a dampner on your plans, I just wouldn't personally risk it.

We honeymooned from early September, Singapore (humid, hazy), Bali (zinging sunshine) and Malaysia (humid, rained A LOT).
