Honeymoon

TinaBeana, 30 January, 2016 at 19:20 Posted on Planning 0 14

So after much searching and deliberating me and my H2B decided to go to Mexio for our honeymoon. I found and fell in love with a hotel.

However with the outbreak of the Zika virus we don't think it's a wise idea to go to that part of the work anymore :-( (we don't have kids yet)

But I can't find anywhere to go. Has anyone had else had this problem? Can anyone recommend where to go in November this year and who to book it with?

Thanks ladies XxX

Don't you hate it when plans get mucked up. Hope you find something. I went to the Arctic. Slightly colder than Mexico! If you still want that sort of area how about the Caribbean.

Unfortunately it's starting to spread to the Caribbean :-( We think it's best to avoid the whole continent as it could spread massivly in 10 months

We don't have kids yet and will be going to Mexico for our honeymoon with an intention to start a family later in the year. As you can imagine, I've done a fair bit of reading on the subject and from what I can tell:

It only causes problems in women who are already pregnant.

If you do get the virus, it only lasts about a week.

Whilst women living in affected regions are being advised to delay getting pregnant, holidaymakers should be fine after one or two cycles after leaving the area.

So, unless you're set on a honeymoon baby, you should be fine. I'm certainly not worried about it.

Oh no, I hope you manage to sort something out. We always tend to take November holidays and in the last few years we've been to Bali, Mauritus, South Africa and Dubai which were all lovely that time of year! Good luck x

We're going to the Caribbean for ours and I've had a read about this. It seems the advice is that if you've had zika or think you have (4 out of 5 don't have symptoms) then you should avoid conceiving for 6 months. Not in that much of a rush immediately after the wedding anyway so we're going with it. No worries.

We went to Zanzibar and it was stunning - I loved the North of the Island. (Big Rasta influence in that area, and wonderful fun!!!) the old StoneTown is magnificent too - full of history. My father is from Mauritius and I've been lucky enough to go on holiday there a couple of times and it is very beautiful too.

I hadn't really thought about the virus in relation to our honeymoon so thanks for bringing it to my attention. We are going to Florida in August, which isn't affected at the moment but it's fairly close so you never know. But we had planned on starting the baby making straight away so perhaps we will hold off until after we come back.

We're booked to go to Mexico in May and the plan was to start trying straight away so I'm a bit worried. We got this letter on Thursday. If it gets worse, I might see if I can change it.

no mozzies in lapland??????? come again? there are more mosquitoes in finland than most other places in the world! it's called the land of lakes! utter breeding ground in summer. you swap your snowsuit for a netting mesh suit!

they may be dormant in winter, but they're still there! my friend has lived there all her life and has been bitten the whole year through! haha

sorry jayne, i'm not meaning to hammer the point but it did make me shocked and giggle so!

I think that Zika has even been found in some European countries, so I'm not sure it's really worth everyone changing their honeymoon destination (often a once in a lifetime trip), in order to start trying for a baby straight away - you'll make enough sacrifices for your children once they're here!

I have been given a date by my doctor as to when it will be ok for me to conceive (nothing to do with Zika) but even if I were able to start trying on my honeymoon I wouldn't. I want to enjoy every second, which means drinking as many cocktails and eating as much rare meat as I want without worrying "what if I'm pregnant".

I'd much rather have the best of both worlds by having an amazing honeymoon and look forward to baby making a couple of months later.

    I agree with ExpensivePinkCars.

We've decided to spend an extortionate amount of money on our Honeymoon. We're going to the Galapagos Islands, and it's costing almost as much as the wedding itself! ? BUT, it's been our dream holiday for years (mine since I first learned of the place in school) and if we don't go now, then there'll be kids, mortgages etc and we'll never get round to going. We could save and save and save and there'll always be something that will require attention - vet bills, washing machine breakdown, cars need fixing... We're lucky enough to be in the position that we can 'comfortably' put the shortfall on a credit card and pay it off, whilst still putting money away for a house deposit. If it means we have to delay trying for kids for a few months then so be it! Obviously I'll be keeping an eye on the situation, just in case, but as said above, you will make sacrifices for your children for the rest of your lives once they're here!

I think you're best off going to your dream destination/hotel, consulting your doctor about when would be safe for you to get pregnant on return from an affected area, and just go and enjoy yourselves Smiley smile

Also, November is a fair way away, it's more than likely that anywhere marked as 'safe' today will be affected by the time you're ready to board your flight to Honeymoon unless they can contain it (which is looking fairly unlikely from what i've seen on the news).
