Honeymoon in Rome

sidsidney, 10 January, 2010 at 09:46 Posted on Planning 0 8

Morning all!

OH and I have pretty much decided on Rome for our honeymoon so need to get booking now.

I wondered if any of you have been and ....

* have any nice hotel recommendations.

* whether you think that 2 weeks is too long for a city holiday?

We are not really beach lovers and like to eat, drink and see sights. but I dont want to get bored! If 2 weeks is too much we might think about one week Rome and one by the coast or in Venice.

Any opinions and advise would be appreciated!

Ta

Sid

Thanks! Clearly my geography is rubbish because I never realised that Pompeii was in Italy! I think that would be a really interesting place to visit.

    Hiya Sid,

Many congrats on your upcoming wedding.

I went to Rome a few years ago, and it is such an amazing and gorgeous city, with some very interesting things to see (esp the Vatican for example), but I do possibly agree with you that 2 weeks may be too long....like you say a week there, and the next week somewhere else in Italy sounds like a great idea ?

All the best for your plans!

    take care,

    Chitra x

On my honeymoon we started in Sorrento, by flying into Naples, to visit Pompey then got the train to Rome for a few days, then to Florence, then Venice and flew back from Venice.

We got engaged in Rome in 2008. It's a fabulous city with lots of things to see.

My highlights were the Vatican and Vatican city, the Pope's public service on a Wednesday morning, the coliseum and the Sisteen chapel, but tbh i loved it all. We went for 6 days and managed to see everything we wanted to see, so i think 2 weeks would be a little too long. Although there are options of various day trips to Pompeii etc which we didn't get the chance to go on. I would go back in a heartbeat! ?

Rome is lovely, perhaps my fave eurpopean city. if you like to eat and drink italy is the place to be! and of course the sights are unbeatable. i would also agree that 2 weeks is slightly long, maybe you can go to 1 or 2 other italian cities as suggested. venice is apparently also lovely and completely different. if you are after amazing food bologna is good for that, but not much to see. florence is great if u like art... you'll have a fab time whatever u decide! xx

I went to Rome the year before last and it is the most amazingplace. I was overawed and totally overwhelmed by the Vatican and the Pantheon ! We managed to see all the sights but 2 weeks would've been too long. 1 week in Rome and another week elsewhere in Italy would be fab imo.

    Rome is AMAZING!!!!

We camped so no hotel ideas however.

A week would be more than enough in my opinion. Florence is easily reachable by train from Rome and is also lovely. It is also very easy to get from Florence to Pisa for a day trip. Verona is also fab!

Trains in Italy work very well, all the train people speak english (if you're italian isn't great) and it's really not an expensive way to travel. We did Pisa, Rome, florence, Bologna, Verona and Venice in 11 days...all by train. (proper toruist but had a Kiwi with me so I blame her and her 'doing europe' approach to life. Tee Hee!)

Ryan air also fly to most of the abouve places so you can easily and inexpensively fly into one airport and back from another which cuts down on travelling.

    Enjoy x
