Honeymoons

Mrs*M, 15 January, 2013 at 13:33 Posted on Planning 0 39

Hi all

Where is everyone planning on going for their honeymoon? Or if already married where did you go?

I'm looking for inspiration, we are getting married in August and found that wherever we like is either in hurricane season or monsoon season!

thanks!

We had a 12 hour flight to Singapore (from Heathrow). Who are you flying with? Then 2 hours to Bali.

I went to Barbados for my honeymoon, and it was amazing - but it's the hurrican season there in August so it might not be your best bet.

If you don't mind waiting until a month after the wedding, Cyprus is lovely in September. I went to Paphos last September and the weather was absolutely beautiful.

We have to go straight after the wedding as I work in a school so I'm back to work by Sept, I was looking at Paphos yesterday though and seen some lovely places. It is looking likely to be somewhere in America, New York, Vegas, LA, or somewhere in Europe, Cyprus, Greek islands or Italy. My OH keeps moaning we can do europe any year though but doesn't want to do a multi destination or hire a car so he is driving me mad! I'm finding this more stressful than any other part of the wedding planning!

Don't be too put off by the hurricane season! We're going to the Dom Rep in September; slap bang in the middle of the 'season'. It was the furthest afield we could afford to go on our budget as we couldn't afford the Maldives / Indian Ocean. Otherwise we would have had to stick to Europe / North Africa.

The reason we went ahead with it is because other people we knew had gone to the same region in Sept / Oct time and it had been fine. My fiance's sister was married at the start of September then went to Mexico- wall to wall sunshine and no hurricanes. Likewise, some friends of ours were married a few years back in September and went to the Dom Rep and the weather was perfect!

I think as long as you expect a few days of heavy rain (which could be more or less of a problem depending on how long you're going for) you'll be OK. I've been to Spain in the middle of the 'hot' season before and it's poured it down with rain for days on end! I don't think you can ever tell with the weather.

I haven't booked a honeymoon yet or decided on a destination however I've been on lots of holidays (my Dad was a pilot) also my Mum is a teacher so they have all been in school holidays. I have been to the Caribbean a few of times and as the lady above said it's not guaranteed you will get a hurricane. We just had very heavy showers on a few of the days. The other thing to remember is heavy rain there is not the same as here. It rained in the afternoons around 3pm for 30mins or so but was completely dry by 4pm. The temperature didn’t drop either so if we were caught in the rain it wasn’t really a problem. I think you would be very unlucky to have a hurricane but you should expect some rain.

Thanks to you both, I think it may be worth the risk to at least look into them. Can you recommend anywhere in the Caribbean? We liked the look of St Lucia.

If we could have stretched we would have booked Cocobay or Sugar Ridge in Antigua.

Our dream was Bora Bora though - but we live in reality ;o)

I have been to the Dominican Republic, St Lucia, Barbados, Cuba, Isle de Margarita and Mexico in and around the Caribbean. My favourites were Barbados and Cuba. We found St Lucia to be quite tired and didn’t feel very safe in the town at night (I’ve travelled many times alone and studied abroad twice so I’m not easily intimidated). However was just one holiday and I’m sure other people have had wonderful trips there. Barbados was unbelievable; we had fantastic food, great service and travelled all over the island on local buses without any problems or worries. My H2B and I went to Cuba for his 30th and again had a fantastic holiday. We loved wandering around Havana and soaking up the culture which is really different to the other islands I’ve been to. I think it depends what you want if you are happy to stay in your hotel then any island would be fine if you are looking to get out into the towns I would choose more carefully.

We've just booked 6 nights Hawaii, 3 LA and 4 Vegas. The travel agent said in terms of weather we could do that any time of year.

We are going to Jamaica in June, the beginning of the hurricane season! We decided to give it a go for exactly the reasons someone mentioned above, the rain comes and goes so quick and as it's so hot sometimes you are grateful for a shower.

We are staying in a sandals resort.

    Getting quite excited now!

I'm super super SUPER excited about mine.

4 nights in a cottage on Dartmoor, log burner, beautiful kitchen, big beams, outdoor patio seating, old pub down the road, walks and cycling and picnics etc

3 nights in the honeymoon suite at Newquay, seafood restaurants, beach walks and wine bars.

Booking that in the last 2 days has me the most excited I've been since we got a ring!!! More excited than the dress even Smiley smile

I'm not saying it would completely put me off travelling during hurricane season, but I think people should be aware that if they get caught up in a hurricane it can have the capacity to, at best, completely wipe out a good few days of your holiday. Towards the worse end of the scale you could be left in a resort with no power or water for a few days and depending on airport damage flights can be grounded for a few days.

I don't mean to put a downer on peoples' plans but I do speak from some experience. We spent part of our honeymoon in December last year in Fiji. A category 4 cyclone hit the island we stayed on. Luckily we had been warned some days earlier by the people who run the diveschool so we monitored the track ourselves. I saw luckily because the report managers had a very relaxed attitude to it and there is no way they were going to take the decision to evacuate the guests. We took the decision ourselves to leave early and head back to Australia, partly because we didn't think being in the middle of a cyclone would be any fun but also because we were concerned that we wouldn't be able to get back to the main island for a few days which would put us at risk of missing our flight back to Oz and consequently our flight back to London (normally having to spend an extra couple of days on holiday would not bother me, but it was close to Christmas and we knew we wouldn't be able to get on another flight).

We were able to do this because we were wll informed and we were able to fund out own additional flights and hotels. Travel insurance will not pay out unless your flight is cancelled (ours wasn't but we could not have got there) or the hotel closes and evacuates everyone. Risk of disruption is obviously less if you don't need to take any additional internal flights or transfers (we had helicopter transfer to the main island).

Luckily we had 8 great days in Fiji before we left (rather than the 10 we planned) and also had about 8 days in Australia which were great so we didn't feel it ruined out honeymoon. But if we had only had a week in total I would have felt very short changed! Although after my New York marathon fiasco last year I've had enough of tropical storms!

Good point regarding the risk. I was stranded, with my son, in Qatar when the Icelandic volcano kicked off and we were on our way back from Australia. It was quite traumatic actually and although it didn't spoil the holiday I wouldn't ever take a risk if I didn't need to. But then, I'm a bit of a wuss!

I'm such a wuss too! Everyone's honeymoon sounds really nice, I love the sound of Hawaii, LA and Vegas, have you found anywhere online that give quotes on multi destination or do we need to go to speak to a travel agent?

    I am sooo excited about our honeymoon!! We're doing it ourselves, for two weeks, rather than booking a package so;

    • Flying in to Los Angeles (cheapest airport to fly in to), picking up our hire car & spending one night there to recover from flights
    • Driving to Las Vegas for two nights - kayaking down the grand canyon/hoover dam one day and doing the whole "vegas" thing another day
    • Driving in to the National Parks (Yosemite) and spending two nights there, doing big walks etc.
    • Driving to San Francisco and spending the rest of our time there!! YAY!!!

Flights were £1,500 for the both of us, to fly in to LA and out of San Fran. We think the car hire is about $500 and accomodation will be around $100 a night (we're finding hotels along the way rather than booking them all before we go...doing research on lots of options before we go though!!)

El Dorado Seaside Suites - We stayed here in Oct 2010, best holiday i have ever had, you will love it. The place is so romantic, couples only and the food and service is top class. We have booked to go to Sri Lanka for a week and then on to the Maldives. So worried it wont live up to this place!

I didn't look tbh for a website that did multi destinations, I did look at booking the hotels ourselves but it wasn't much better. And we decided it would be easier to just have someone else sort it all even if it did cost a bit more. We've never been abroad together and probably won't go again for a few years so were pulling all the stops out. I will say though if you can be flexible in your dates, and the order you do things in you can get a better price. And a get a good travel agent, our final price is 2k cheaper than our original quote. I can't wait to go!

    Hi EAC!

We book a lot of our holidays this way - first we found flights that went from a convenient airport to where we wanted to go (Milan for example has three airports but one is closer than the others), booked those. Then we went on Tripadvisor and searched for hotels in the places we wanted to go and then booked each one for the days we wanted, some directly with the hotel and others on Hotels.com (or something similar).

This will be the first time I've ever flown to and from different airports, we are flying in to Venice and out of Milan, it should be fun! We haven't hired a car yet but we will, probably through Hertz, I think you have to pay extra as you aren't returning it to the same place. You could do it all by train though instead.

Re. costs we just worked out what we could afford and put together a spreadsheet of what proportions we would spend on accommodation in each place, Venice for example is an expensive place to stay so we budgeted more per night there.

Hope that helps Smiley smile x
