Honeymoons - relaxation or adventure??

MISSMAYFLOWER, 15 June, 2010 at 09:38 Posted on Planning 0 23

Hi everyone

My OH and I are starting to look at our honeymoon and can't decide whether we would prefer a couple of weeks relaxation and luxury or a month of travelling across the USA, seeing a new place almost every day. We want the honeymoon to be a holiday we'll never forget but we're not sure which we'd enjoy more!

Bit of a pointless post I guess but just curious to see what you are all doing for honeymoons and how you came to that decision? Also, for any OM's, did you feel you needed a rest after the wedding or were you ready to go off and explore?

x

We are going on safari because it's something we'd both love to do. I didn't want 2 weeks of relaxation because I just know that h2b would get bored and then it wouldn't be relaxing!

I'd choose the one month across the USA as there are so many amazing places to see there. You can fit in a bit of relaxation somewhere along the way, and you don't need to do a new place every single day.

We're just starting to think about our honeymoon too.

We thought about skiing in Aspen, but we're skiing at Christmas and will be going every year as our main holiday in the future so decided against in for honeymoon. The latest thought is Cuba. I love the idea of 3-5 nights in Havana with all the history, culture, salsa and mojitos followed by a week or so at an amazing 5 star all inclusive beach resort to relax and really enjoy each others company. Best of both worlds for us that way.

We're definatly about Relaxation and luxury... we won't be moving from our sunbeds for around 3 weeks on our honeymoon. OH is like me, find a good book, Ipod or DS lite, cocktail in other hand and that's it!

We even have a very strict rota we abide by. Up at 7am for breakfast, down to pool by 9am. Lunch at 12.30pm, back on Sunbed by 2pm. Grab takeaway box of goodies from Pool Bar, and head back to room for 5pm. Jump in Jacuzzi whilst trying not to drop a rib or chip!. have a little nap. Dinner at 8.30, followed by lots of drinking!

Its the same every day, and we never get bored!!! Sad I know!

    I'm an adventure girl.

We want to go travelling around New Zealand in a campervan for our honeymoon. Firgure we will prob have a couple of nights in a posh spa hotel as a mini relax - but otherwise it's mountains and activities for us!

We're doing a bit of both, decided we would go mad having 2 weeks just relaxing. We are going to Sri Lanka for 1 week and will do lots of activities whilst we are there and then our second week is in an overwater bungalow in the Maldives which will be our week of luxury and relaxtation!

Me and OH are complete opposites, I could quite happily lie by a pool for two whole weeks doing not much at all, whereas H2B can't even sit still at home to watch a film!! We're hoping to have a honeymoon which will incorporate things we both enjoy, we're just not sure what yet!!! We're going away for a week straight after the wedding to a lodge near York (somewhere we both love) then we will start thinking about somewhere to go in 2011 x

I'm an adventure girl too so I would choose the tour arcross America. The thought of sitting by the pool or on the beach bores me. We have been thinking about going on Safari and then maybe off the see the pryamids.

Thanks girls - I think you are right, its all down to personal preference and if your OH is happy to relax on holiday. I think i'm being swayed towards the trip across the USA - we'll prob never get teh chance again to have a month off together and hopefully we might be able to fit some relaxation in as well ?

Now see I find it hard to relax, but as its my honeymoon I think I'll only get to do it once i.e. white sandy beaches etc. I like the idea of splitting the holiday in 2, but there again I dont think I'd enjoy that as I'd be thinking about having to pack again for the second part (sad I know)! Plus I wouldnt feel like I'd had enough time to relax...

We are therefore going to one place for 14 days, but somewhere with the option of doing stuff e.g. Mauritius (plantations, market, harbour, walks etc) or Bali, Sri Lanka etc.

I couldnt go somewhere like the Maldives or Seychelles as other than diving and watersports - not much to do!

But its each to their own - its YOUR honeymoon - do what you want to do. You could always plan a stop at a spa for a few days in the middle/at the end...

We had our wedding in Portugal in September, and have spent many holidays there so didn't want to honeymoon there too. So the day after we got back we had 4 days in Bruges for a mini moon which was nice. You'll find that after your wedding you need time to just switch off and a bit of peace as it's such a whirlwind. So I would thoroughly recommend doing something very relaxing, then a bit of adventure/exploration and finishing with a couple of days relaxing again.

For our main honeymoon we did a taster tour of the world in Feb/March - although I would have liked a bit more of a relax at the end of the holiday as we were shattered from taking so much in!

Week 1 - UK to Koh Samui (friends wedding) for 4 days then Bangkok for 2.5 days

Week 2 - Visiting family in New Zealand - Wellington/Otaki

Week 3 - Driving up the North island to Taupo (2 days), Rotorua (2 days), Auckland (1 day)

Week 4 - NZ to LA for 24 hrs (went to Hollywood), LA to San Francisco (3 days), SF to Las Vegas (2 days...too long) - Home

The trip across America does sound amazing, and as someone else said, you can make sure you get a little relaxation in along the way. We have decided on Italy, to combine culture and a bit of relaxation. We aren't ones for spending day after day round the pool, we get bored of that after a couple of days, so are planning a multicentre honeymoon.

Some of these honeymoons sound amazing by the way!

We're doing both... I felt like you want a trip to remember and to relax at some point. 4 days safari then were off to the beach for 9 days!!! It should be amazing... could you combine a trip in the US with some time in Hawaii or Florida a lot of companies do that

    xx

We're doing a bit of both - 4 nights in Kuala Lumpur to do some sightseeing, shopping, eating out, partying. and then 10 nights in the Maldives to relax, swim and sunbathe. i think we'll really need to relax after the hectic wedding period!!!

USA trip sounds fab but, as bridetobe said, i would suggest booking in maybe 5 nights of some fab relaxation along the way. somewhere like florida or along the west coast would have some nice resorts. or if you have the time and money, finish off with a few nights in Hawaii!! or if you aren't into sun and sea, could book a cabin in the woods for some proper chilled out time.

ps.SamSam - Havana and Cuba are fab - go quick before it gets taken over by globalisation!

We are opting for a week of rest and relaxation in Runaway Bay, Jamaica in our own little cottage on the beach. We will however, be going on outings to see the country, which is kind of adventure but by the sea is where we want to be x

We had the best of both worlds and the first week was pretty full on.

Monday afternoon flew to Heathrow to stay there until the flight at 7am.

Didn't arrive in Borneo until 7pm on Wednesday night.

Had 2 days of chilling and getting over the gigantic jetlag and then 4 full on days of touring about with 5am starts to the day. We saw the most amazing places including newborn orangutans and turtles which was my total dream honeymoon.

Changed hotels to a 5 star based within a rainforest for 4 days which was blissful after all the early mornings and then flew 7 hours to Dubai where we had another 3 days of doing different things and cramming as much in as possible before going home.

In total we had 12 flights, over 100 hours on planes and I loved every minute. Neither of us could have handled 2 weeks of lying by a beach and in my opinion is seems a waste so it was great to be doing a bit of both.

We had the same dilemma as we were splashing out on going somewhere far we wanted it to be somewhere interesting and memorable...but didn't want to come back exhausted! I love the US and we did a Vegas and San Fran combo a couple of years ago, and though it was amazing and I'd always wanted to go to San Fran I really remember feeling SO tired when we were there cos there was so much to see and do...almost too much! we didn't wanna miss out but didn't get enough time to just chill and soak up the city together and most importantly relax on holiday! So if you fancy the US go for it - it sounds amazing having a month there but like someone said I would def build in some relaxing time - like maybe if you do vegas stay somewhere with a pool and have a few cocktail and pool days, etc. and I also wouldn't try to do too much which i'm always tempted by but regret. Better you see 5 places really properly and relax than try to cram in 10 (these numbers are just random obviously!)

We're going to Hawaii for a bit of a mix but leaning more to the relaxing! Again we were first tempted to do all the islands in 2 weeks but didn't want to be travelling constantly on our honeymoon (need time for lie ins ?) so we are doing 2 islands - 1 week will be more touristy/sight seeing, and the next relaxing together, cocktails and hula shows - love it!

We are doing a bit of both too.
We knew we'd both get bored with 2 week beach type holiday, however we wanted a bit of luxury and we also wanted to go somewhere neither of had already been (which actually cut out half the world, LOL)

We have ended up with: 8 Days in South Africa exploring the garden route (inc whale watching), staying in 4* & 5* hotels followed by 3 days on safari, then we fly to Mauritius for 4 nights in a 5* place.

Its approx 5 times more expensive than any other holiday we've ever been on together and i'm very excited about it :-)

We loved it but we were only there for 3 days so had heaps to be doing in that time. We visited the malls, had an afternoon by the pool/beach, went on a desert jeep adventure and went to Atlantis to swim with the dolphins. We would certainly go back but only for a week.

We went to Le Royal Meridien which is extremely expensive and eating out wasn't a cheap experience so we aren't sure if we would go back to the same area. A burger by the pool at lunchtime cost £18, a can of juice is £5, vodka and coke £20.

It is a totally different experience to other destinations and a different type of holiday so it depends on what you want but it got the thumbs up from us and we are fussy buggers!

I initially thought I'd like to do a week of adventure followed by a week of relaxation for our honeymoon, but OH was adamant that he wants to sit around and do nothing for two weeks! Budget is a bit tight, so we're off to Santorini in Greece which is perfect really - enough to do to keep us busy (and I AM determined to get OH off the sunbed!), but perfect for relaxation. When it came down to it, we really had to choose between a week somewhere more exotic in cheaper accommodation or a fortnight closer to home in posher accommodation. It was the private jacuzzi that finally decided it for us! We've only ever gone on holiday self-catering for a week at a time over the last ten years, so this is exotic for us! ?

Think we'll leave the action-packed adventure for our first anniversary, when we've had some time to save up again! ?

Well we're going to Mauritius to the Sugar Beach Resort! I can't wait! Smiley smile Its got the spa, beach, all the relaxing luxury we could want! Also there are opportunities for a bit of adventure as well - quad biking with lions i believe, and when the OH found a trip-adviser write up of a couple who hired a convertible mini for the day and driving round the island - we decided that could be something we can do as well! So in response to you question - there is always room for both! And if we decide that we don't want to do the adventure thing...all well and good!
