Honeymoons... where to start?! - NOW BOOKED! :)

Gumibear85, 24 April, 2013 at 11:28 Posted on Planning 0 17

So, I want to start looking around for our honeymoon, but im a little stumped as to where to begin looking.

All previous holidays we have had I have booked online (im a massive bargain hunter) and have never stepped foot in a travel agents... well, apart from once when I fell over outside one and they came and rescued me... but thats a totally different story!

I want something special, I dont want a holiday, I want a honeymoon!

The top 3 places we are interested in are Bali, Fiji and the Maldives - all places I have always wanted to go, but never been able to afford.

I also dont want to spend an absolute fortune. Dont get me wrong, I know this isnt going to be a cheap affair, but I really cant afford to be spending thousands and thousands.

Any help with where to start looking would be greatly appreciated Smiley smile

Thanks ladies!

I would begin with a travel agents so you can get an idea as to what each place has to offer & an idea of prices. So, background work if you will. After that, I'd look at hotels websites and airlines and see what you can get if you put a package together yourself. If you like the look of specific resorts/hotels in the travel agents, you could try their websites or contacting them directly to see if any deals/special offers. It's also worth general google searches and see what they turn up.

    Does that help?!

We went to Bali for ten days (with time in Singapore and Malaysia either side). I think, of the three options you've picked, you stand a better chance of getting cheaper accommodation (at the same standard) there than Fiji/Maldives. Our hotel, for ten days, cost something like £2k. For the standard we had, we'd have had to spend £5k+ in the Maldives.

We used a travel agent for the first time. We went to Kuoni, but I now understand that Kuoni holidays can be booked with other agents who might be willing to undercut (we didn't know at the time).

    How much is your budget?

T4yto - thanks, yeah that makes sense Smiley smile good idea!

FTLOMB - What did you think of Bali? Did you enjoy it??

as for my budget... i really dont know to be honest. Its a case of seeing how much it is going to cost and working out if we can afford to save etc for it or not!

its just hard as i have NEVER spent that much on a holiday before!! Our most expensive one has been about £600 each!!!

So, if you took our time in Singapore/Malaysia out of the equation, and just looked at the flight cost/hotel in Bali, it would have come out around £4k.

We used Virgin. We researched online a lot first to get an idea of the hotels and prices and then we went to the Virgin desk in Debenhams and they went through lots of options with us and gave us a discount which was good.

I'd get some brochures from travel agents just to get some ideas and then look into booking flights and accommodation separately to see if I could get a better deal. We went to Fiji for 5 days before the States and it was lovely. If I was to do it again, though, I'd go all-inclusive, so I didn't have to worry about how much we were spending on food and drink.

I think Maldives is generally a given that you have to book a package through an agent (online or in store) to get the best deal. Doing a multi centre to the Maldives and Sri Lanka is a great way to reduce the overall cost and Sri Lanka is a beautiful country.

Bali it is worth looking into booking flights and accomodation seperatly in comparison to packages. We booked everything independently when we went to Bali.

Agoda is a good sight hor booking discounted hotels in Asia

Havey and Jarvis is a great online travel agent that I find tend to be cheaper when compared to the likes of Kuoni

Air Asia is a cheap budget airline that is great if you are booking a multi centre independently

Just read this thread...we too are having great difficulty in deciding where to go for our honeymoon. Can I ask how much it has cost you for 12 nights in Bali?

    Hehe thank you!

i am so excited Smiley smile

But at the same time, I am also worried that it wont be as nice as i want it to be.

i know that sounds silly, but we have only ever spent a few hundred quid each on going on holiday... so if you turn up and it is just "ok" you dont feel too disappointed... but when we are spending nearly £4k I want it to feel like £4k's worth!!

The hotel does look fab though... heres a video of it if you want to have a look!

We went to Seminyak, same as Footlong. I wish we'd been able to see more of Bali but on the day we'd set aside to explore the island, I decided to contract food poisoning and we were going home the day after that! Gutted!
