Honeymoons/costs

teeheeyoucrazyguys!, 12 January, 2009 at 20:25 Posted on Planning 0 13

One shouldnt feel bad for spending a lot of money on a honeymoon should they? I mean the cost shouldnt matter but if we want a place badly and its high season, we shouldnt feel bad for spending that money?? its more than we'd ever pay for a normal holiday but, its going to cost so much as we need to fly to london and get accomodation in london too before we can fly out.... its really making our decision making very difficult...

Oh babe, i really really feel for you. We were in exactly the same place, as we wanted luxury all the way. Havent been on a long haul flight together...ever, and had decided that we wanted to go to St Lucia.

Although i do wince everytime i think how much the total wedding is including the honeymoon, its going to be worth it.

Come on then honey, what you looking at??

No in my opinion! When will you be going on honeymoon again! To be honest we are looking forward to the honeymoon more than the wedding, because it will be just the two of us chilling out on a beach together!

So in short no, go for it girl!?

We are wanting to stay in a private villa on a greek island, where we had our first holiday together. The price hits the high season on the day we leave - always seems to conincide with the english school holidays! and includes flights from london, boats, taxis, and then we would need to hire a car to get to the small towns and do shopping for the villa etc. We are going to see if we can get a discount if we dont take their flights, and arrange our own, from scotland. The accomodation is over a grand per person so far which to me is crazzzzzzzy money.....

we just feel so guilty on it. He's never ever spent that much on a car and thats saying something!

I say go for it (within reason) it is your honeymoon and you'll always remember it.

When is the last time you guys went somewhere hot + sunny?

We're budgeting around £1k each and we have only been on holiday together twice in 7 years....

We spent a lot on ours, but then we have never had a long haul holiday together and have had only 2 hols in 5 years of knowing each other. The way I see it is that this could be the last holiday before we have kids, make the most of it!

Book it. it's your honeymoon. you'll only do it once. plus any future hols may involve kids (ok, lets not get tooooo ahead of ourselves, but it's a possibility!) so do something fabulous just the two of you.

it IS a real pain going on HM during peak season - all the flight agents i talk to ask if we can make it a bit earlier in the year - NOOOOOO we can't, it's our honeymoon, we know it's the school holidays, my fiance is a teacher!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(can you tell we've had this discussion before?!?!)

I know exactly how you feel. We're normally (well the only 2 holidays we've had in 5 years that aren't visiting friends/weddings) last minute bargain hunters. However, I figure that I'll still be spending an awful lot more on the wedding and that only lasts for one day, so I may as well spend a decent amount for a ~3 week holiday. I also wouldn't want to come home dissappointed and wish I had spent more, as any holiday after that is just a holiday and loses the 'magic' of a HM.

    Go for it!

Like other people said, you (hopefully!!) will only HM once, so it's fine if it's more than you would normally spend (although i'm prob not the best person to talk to as our HM is a round the world trip!!).

The villa sounds lovely, it has meaning, and to be honest the cost you've said isn't half as much as some people spend!! I say go for it ? (it's so easy to spend other people's money for them, isn't it? ?)

I say go for it, you only get one honeymoon! ?

We're budgeting £2k per person for ours, but we have only had one abroad holiday in the 6 years we've been together so it's not like we go on holiday every year. ?

I find it much easier to justify the cost of an amazing honeymoon than the same costs for one day for a wedding.

We really are doing the trip of a lifetime for ours. I have always wanted to do a horseback safari - its top of my list of things to do before I die, and if I am determined to do it at some point, then what better occassion than to celebrate our marriage! And as its going to cost us a fortune anyway, we decided in the end to go for the one we REALLY want to do rather than compromise with a cheaper alternative (which would mean we still spent a lot of money, but may have been left thinking we wished we'd taken the opportunity to do the better one).

Its more than I have ever spent on a car too (and fairly equivilent to the most OH has ever spent on a car). We both need new cars (Mine is 15 years old and has done 120k, his is 7 years old and has 170k on the clock ?), and could replace them both with our honeymoon budget ... but new cars can wait - the old ones work (mostly?).

Book it - do it!!!! You'll need the lovely break!!! I wish we had spent more!!!!!!! We spent around £1700 on ours and I wish we had splashed out a little more to get a bit more luxury. We had an amazing time in Cuba but I wished we paid a little bit more to get a bit more pampering. Not that I'm sure it makes much difference in Cuba if you get my drift but there you go.

Here's an idea!! Book a train if you have time! Book it 3 months before and you can get a great deal for a one way trip! We took a train out of Edinburgh on the Monday after our wedding to London and only paid £16 each! We flew back with Easyjet which was a disaster as we missed our connection due to be 90 minutes late out of Havana so that was very costly (extra £70!) - learn from that m'dear - allow extra time for your connection. If possible book a recognised connection with your main air carrier as they will acknowledge the delay!!!

As everyone else has said I'd say go for it. Like your wedding day, your honeymoon will be something you look back on and remember for many years to come. I know you remember most holidays but your honeymoon should be the one time you get to do what you really want.

We always allowed a good budget for ours, nearly the same as the wedding itself, and we are both sooooo looking forward to it.

Zippy - you will NOT get the OH on a train. He has to take the train to glasgow every morning and believes that trains should be ONLY for business people between certain hours (ie the hours he is ON the train) being 6ft 3 with dodgy hips is a bit of a bugger on public transport. lol.

We contacted one landlord of some villas but they couldnt discuss prices - was an automated email. We just dont wanna spend 4K on one weeks holiday... we'll see what tonight brings.
