Horseshoe?

MrsHertfordshire , 13 August, 2014 at 22:33 Posted on Planning 0 14

Hello,

Only this week have I finally got together my something Blue (my sapphire engagement ring & wedding ring), New (dress), Old & Borrowed (sixth pence in shoe placed by my Dad)

Now been looking through my Togs pictures of other Weddings tonight and see so many people with no offence a tacky padded, wooden or plastic horseshoe hanging off the brides wrist, I'm not even having a bag and am giving my bouquet away after the church to a passed family member on their grave after the ceremony - which is really important to me!

I have already had grief over not having a bouquet for the whole day, not having a bag, not having something . . . Do I really now have to hang a horseshoe off my wrist??

Sorry to rant but I really want to be free of accessories and be able to move around my wedding knowing I don't need my ID, house keys, mobile etc xx

Haha I agree on the horseshoes these are sometimes given to you by guests as a good luck charm after the wedding x

I got a vintage horseshoe brooch to pin into my bouquet. I guess if you really wanted to you could have one hidden in your dress somewhere? But if you don't, I say don't worry about it. There are so many of these old superstitions, you can't do everything.

What you have seen is what an older Aunt or gran has given the bride and the brides are lucky that the person giving it has even taken it out the box !!

I very politely ask somone else to "look after them" for you when they are given, they can then get placed perhaps around the cake table.

You should be glad of that plastic one from the newsagents as I have seen a few times a real one given which was not very light to carry around !!

Thank you for the replies, I didn't even realise it was mostly given as a gift. Phew I like the idea of "many thanks and I place by something else so everyone can see" thanks for the tip on the REAL horseshoe though my OH family has an old background in country/ farm and I don't want it sinking into the cake!! Maybe put this gift should I recieve one by the guest book

But thank you again so glad I don't have to lugg it around my wrist!! x

When I was a child people often bought tokens for the children to give to the bride, horseshoes, wooden spoons, chimney sweep cut outs. I remember getting excited waiting for when I would be allowed to go up with mine.

Yup, me too - cut out black cats and small rolling pins! It was the done thing then and, as 3D says, it was SO exciting waiting for your turn to go up and have your picture taken handing it over to the Bride.

The horse shoe is an old Irish tradition.!

Depending on the size and style I quite like it. But I massively biased, I'm Irish lol ..

They still are often given by children - at least in the weddings I've been to that have featured horseshoes, said horseshoe has been given to the bride by a child.

My mum always told me to never have horeshoes because if they fall over its meant to be unlucky or something.

I've seen a few people with knitted bride and grooms so I'm praying nobody gives me one of those for luck! Although if its good enough for Lily Allen ......

I don't like the plastic horseshoes. I'm very lucky because my niece has a show pony so I have bagged myself two aluminium delicate shoes. I've sprayed them added ribbon and I am putting them out as decor. If I get given any by guests I will hide put them with my real horseshoes.

I was given a horseshoe which wasn't too bad, but I was also given a really tacky looking non-wooden spoon by one of my flower girls. The sentiment was really sweet but it was really ugly. I just took them up to our room shortly after the ceremony and said I didn't want to lose them.

Hertfordshire b2b... I'm so glad it's not just me who thinks this! Ilove my family to bits bbut the female members are very fond of buying said 'tat' for any occasion possible!

It often requires the polite thank you and smile. ... to the quickly file said item away. .... too much of a softie to dispose of the items but they're not going to be part of my 'outfit'Thank

you to previous poster who suggested displaying them somewhere. ...great advice that I will certainly act on.

    Thanks. Xxxx

Not all horse shoes are heavy.. Race horses use the aluminium shoes as mentioned already - they're probably lighter than the plastic ones Smiley tongue
