Hotel Chocolat - is it just me that thinks it's not all that?

Lady Falafel, 3 January, 2009 at 18:25 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

I've got a huge box from mr F for Christmas which i'm working my way through. It's beautifully presented but the chocolates themselves taste quite... ordinary. I'd have been pushed to tell the difference between their dark chocolate and orange and Terry's.

Or am I a heathen with no taste?

Another 'not fan' here. I also dislike Thorntons and Montezuma's. I have cheap chocolate tastes I think. I love galaxy, Godiva and Lily O'Briens are also okay. Enjoy the ones you have though.

Oh the irony of your post LF! I scoffed half a box last night and ended up with THE worst migraine of my entire life. I won't be going anywhere near HC ever again.

I do agree with you though - fabulous packaging but nothing particularly special about the contents. Any ideas what I should be buying instead?

Totally average. They are just slightly better packaged supermarket stuff. If I want posh chocolates I'd go to Prestat, Artisan du Chocolat etc.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm still going to scoff my way through them. I'm just not sure it's worth the price differential between that and a box of, say, black magic.

I think the tasting boxes can be hit or miss so wouldn't dismiss them on the basis of just one box. When they are good, they really stick in your memory. There was a white chocolate and cardamom one once which I would probably walk over hot coals for and the salted caramels are gorgeous. I'm not impressed by the plain and milk batons you seem to get in every box as 'good' chocolate on its own is pretty much wasted on me. It's the combination of flavours I enjoy.

Ooooooh I love the salted caramel ones they did and I also like the salted caramel bar, other than that I'm not any more fussed than I am with any other chocolate.

The best chocolate thing I've had ever is the purbeck chocolate biscuit cake from chococo it was amazing, I have to get one for Mr B's birthday as he ate half my birthday one so I need to eat half his!

I'm not a fan either. The chocolate doesn't taste that special to me and the 'drops' of chocolate to make hot chocolate was rank. I'm quite happy with a box of Maltesers lol

I enjoyed the box we were given for Christmas, but I don't think I'd buy it myself. I enjoyed my Chocolate Orange more.

I'll give Prestat a go next time. I'm off chocolate for the next few months while I attempt to shift a bit of weight but it would be nice to have a little bit for my birthday when the time comes.

In the good old days when they were still Chocolate express - the tasting boxes were heavenly. They have cut corners added more sugar and are no longer worth the dosh. Even Godiva have dumbed down, they were fab 5/6 years ago. I buy Prestat from Waitrose now when i need a fix.

    PS: Thorntons ?
