Hotel Recs in the North West

Nichola80, 9 February, 2009 at 18:03 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 16

Hello helpful hitchers!

For my husband's birthday I want to book a weekend away at a hotel somewhere in the North West (we live in Manchester so can do upto 90 minutes to get there as I'm at work on the Friday and Monday). I can spend upto £200/250 possibly in total for the 2 nights(so 100/125 a night). We're not so bothered about what is in the local area as long as there is somewhere to eat!

Any recommendations as it's always nicer to go with somewhere that people have been before.

Thanks in advance!

Might be a bit too close but my favourite hotel in the Chester Grosvenor. I'm a bit biased because we had our wedding there but it is lovely especially if you want a nice classy hotel plus a bit of shopping in Chester.

I'm sure other people can recommend more hotels but how about renting a cottage in the Lakes for a couple of nights?

Hi Fenella, Chester is a place we've been a few times before so not at all bad to recommend there. Not stayed there before. I was in the lakes a couple of weekends ago so prefer not up there.

Edit: Had a look at the prices and they are WAY out of my budget! They are over for 1 night let alone 2, shame as it looks lovely.

When do you want to go? Only reason I ask is the Grosvenor are doing some really good deals at the moment up to 31 March 09.

Portmeirion in north wales is only about 2 hrs from manchester. we got a really good deal there about this time last year-a suite and dinner for about £150 for both of us I think (or less). Its an amazing place, I`d really recommend it

Would one of the Malmaison or Hotel du Vin hotels be in budget? I know there's a MM in Leeds, and a HDV in Harrogate (no idea if this is within range of Manchester though!) and they do great offers from time to time. I stayed in HDV in Brighton the other week and it was £145 a night (including gorgeous full English breakfast), and really lovely.

What about http://www.cloughmanor.com/ - not sure what the rooms are like but friends have praised the food.

If you want to go to Chester and The Grosvenor is out of budget then I would recomend the Mollington hotel. Its on the outskirts of Chester, but is very nice. I stopped there for 6 weeks when I was training and its a nice place.

It is just outside Nantwich, Cheshire and is a lovely place to go for some relaxation/pampering and the food is great.

It is fantastic value for money and I am sue you wouldn't be disappointed.

Got a good deal on a "Junior Suite" for 2 nights including meal on the first night and breakfast on both mornings. Let people know if its any good.

We've got family nearby here so we've stayed a few times now, it's pretty nice, the pool and spa bit is good! Meadowhell isn't too far, (good thing/bad thing?!), Wentworth Castle/Garden Centre are good for a mooch, and the Heritage Centre at Elsecar has a mix of little shops and antiques too.

    Enjoy!

Yes, I know the area well. I've been to the heritage centre years ago when it first opened and all around there with my grandparents who lived not far from there, Thanks though.
