House plants

HatTrick, 12 March, 2013 at 08:20 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 33

Do you have any? I can remember it being my job to water all of the house plants on a Sunday when I was little, we used to have a fair few.

H was given a Christmas present from his hairdresser (weird?) and it was one of those grow your own bulb kits. No idea what the plant is but I planted it and its still going strong, I'm rather proud of myself. My friend bought me a bonsai tree once and I managed to keep it alive for a week or two.

I've got about 4 or 5 house plants. I'm not very good with them, they have to be pretty hardy to survive in my house. They either get over watered or not watered at all. I've got a peace lily that I've had for about 8 years though, I think this is pretty good going.

We have one in a pot in our dresser - H brought it home from Aldi one night. No idea what it is, but it seems to be surviving on little water and light.

My Mum is a notorious plant killer, so just buys plastic now, saves money.

Wow 8 years? Lucky if they last 8 days here. My plastic ikea ones are still going strong though!

Nothing lasts in our house. We have articicial flowers in vases, plastic plants in the kitchen. The only 'alive' plant we have is a tall one in the livingroom that was bought from B&Q. No idea what it is but it looked a lot better when we first got it.. because we didn't water it a lot of the leaves died and also the dog decided every now and again to pull the bottom leaves off. The top of it looks quite healthy though!

Nope, the cats just eat them all. Even cacti.

I manage to kill pretty much everything.

currently have an example of the centrepiece for our wedding in our living room. i'm so paranoid about killing it by letting it go dry that I'm probably over-watering it.

However...my cactus is still going strong in our conservatory. Maybe I should give that a little bit of water.

I have a pot of rosemary on the kitchen window. That's it really. I don't understand house plants TBH. I like herbs as I can eat them but I just wouldn't have others in the house. They are a bit pointless if you ask me.

We've got a Yucca plant (big thing in a pot on the floor) which I absolutely hate. But for some reason H really likes it and refuses to let me chuck it out.

My mum adopted my house plant when I left uni - no idea what it is but it was £1.99 in Ikea! 10 years later it's thriving and about 10 times larger than when I bought it.

We used to have a load of house plants in our office at work - spider plants, lilies etc. They rarely got watered but managed to survive!

I am quite good at killing plants - Boy jokes that I'm ace at growing sticks.

I have three house plants on the go at the moment - a massive peace lily on the floor of the living room, and two little pot things (a mini palm and one unidentified) that are thriving on the kitchen windowsill (after I rescued them from the bathrooms that they didn't seem to like).

It's really easy to remember to water the peace lily because if I don't, the leaves droop and block my view of the TV. I need explicit signals like this.

When I was younger I had a spider plant that lived forever. It was in my bedroom but then I think I put it in the kitchen and my mum took it over. They are pretty hard to kill

I can't remember you having any plants OB? Shows how observant I am.

I'm intrigued to know what plant I have in the kitchen now. Will have to post a pic. It did have a flower but it's dead now, the plant bit is still going so will it re-flower?

I had a couple in the kitchen, and quite a few upstairs.

Post a pic and we'll see if we can identify your poorly one! Most will come back to life as long as the leaves haven't completely died.

We had a little cactus on the kitchen window sill which the current cats dug up & used as a football.

We currently have a lemon tree in the hall which the cats ignore - did you know lemon trees have quite serious spikes on them?

We've managed to kill a bonsai tree & a lucky bamboo through lack of watering.

We've got 2 orchids that need some serious TLC - one of which has been unpotted by the cats several times.

we also have some other kind of thin leaved type thing which used to be in the lounge & used to look lovely. previous cat ignored it, current cats don't. It's been knocked over no end of times & the ends of the leaves are all chewed & several lumps have been pulled off - covered the top of the pot in tin foil to keep them off it but they just pulled that off!

It then got moved to the bedroom (door stays shut most of the time) but kept being pulled over once spilling freshly watered compost all over the bedroom carpet (which OH decided to hoover up straight away despite me telling him to leave it to dry so the hoover now smells of damp compost!).

The poor thing has now been relegated to the en-suite squashed between the sink & door. There isn't really room for it, it gets covered in shaving gel & toothpaste splashes but gets it's own back by jabbing you with the ends of the leaves when you are trying to brush your teeth. Not actually sure when it last got watered...

No house plants, the cats tend to knock them off, or I end up killing them. I do take tomato plants into work and leave them on the windowsill to grow as I have zero space in the house. The boss doesn't really mind...

I have killed all my house plants, despite trying really hard to look after them. I just have dried flowers now. I long for a nice big potted plant though.

My mum has a Yucca plant too that's about as old as me and is half dead. I hate it.

I am rubbish with plants, I got a plant from a groupwork session at uni, we all had to run a group as practise for running groups with clients and someone did gardening. My mum had to adopt it though as I never watered it.

You asked this before HT I remember you being shocked at my 1 or 2 dozen plants.

Why dont you get a ZZ, they are nigh on impossible to kill and actually thrive on neglect. You only have ot water once a quarter and can have them in nearly any light.

    I currently have:

    26 Living room

    3 kitchen,

1 stairs, 3 stairs window ledge

    4 landing,

    4 bedroom,

    2 spare bedroom

    1 study

and 6 spare pots after the house sitter killed some plants over christmas/new year

Thank you!! This has just reminded me to water two that are in the conservatory which I never go in this time of year unless I'm need a drink. I kill plants I'm ashamed to say. We had a lovely funny looking thing which was a house warming present, it didn't like the cold much in the conservatory and I starved it of water too. I later read the label that came with it and realised it was a tropical kinda plant. Oops. My latest plant which I nursed well for a year, gave it to Mother who looked after it great for 5, which has now been back with me for all of 3mths is looking like it wants to collapse. Again, thinking maybe its too cold but I have no idea what it is to google it. Its like a y shape with long thin leaves??

That was one of my jobs from my mum, watering all the plants, as for me, I'm a death eater when it comes to real plants and only have to look in their general direction for them to collapse, drop all leaves and shrivel!

You all need ZZ plants! http://www.gardens4you.co.uk/index.php?/All-Houseplants/Zamioculcas-zamiifolia-1-plant&gclid=CPbx5ciX-LUCFcLHtAod2VUAaA#.UT-mahzF-So

    from a blog about plants...

"I tried to kill a ZZ plant.

    http://mrbrownthumb.blogspot.co.uk/2007/11/zz-plant-easy-low-light-houseplant.html

I've often read that after a nuclear holocaust the only thing to survive would be roaches. I wouldn't be surprised to discover that the ZZ plant can withstand such an event and be one of two things to survive. I don't think it is possible to kill a ZZ plant but if you kill a ZZ plant maybe you should take up computers or crocheting as a hobby and leave houseplants alone.

When I bought my ZZ plant in the spring I brought it home and placed it in an east facing window and kept the shade drawn for two weeks and didn't water it. After two weeks nothing happened so I took the plant outside and left it on the porch where it received full sun and was watered by the rains. For the past two weeks it has been growing back inside in a west facing, low light, window and the ZZ plant has only lost one leaf since the spring. I don't recommend treating your houseplants like this I only did it to test how tough of a houseplant the ZZ plant really was. To my surprise my ZZ plant lived up to the hype and is even sending out new growth. "

I've had house plants. Unfortunately they don't like me so they have died one by one. I did manage to save one by taking it to my mums. She revived it and I didn't want to take it home again so I left it with her.

I replaced my orchid with a plastic one that looks the same as the one that died. That's all I've got that resembles plants.
