How are you paying for your wedding?

Approx how much is your wedding costing, and how are you paying for it?

Ours is going to come in at around £11-12k. My (v generous) parents are paying for the whole reception, which includes the wedding breakfast, drinks, wine for the meal, buffet, room hire etc. This is around £5.5k. My h2b's parents are giving us what they can (around £800) so are paying for the registrar and other bits and bobs. We're paying for £5k worth, which covers all the other 'big' things like photographer, band/DJ, my dress, mini-moon (we're having our main honeymoon 6 months after the wedding, which we'll pay for ourselves and putting any cash gifts that we receive towards it).

My parents are reasonably well off, but they are (also very kindly!) already giving me (and h2b by default) £10k towards a house deposit. They helped me out financially through Uni so all I had to have was the basic student maintenance loan - my debt is a lot less than others as a result.

I personally feel that they have done MORE than enough, and H2B was adamant we wouldn't let them pay for anything other than the reception. However it's surprising how many brides do feel entitled that their parents should fork out for their big day! My h2b's brother is also getting married next year, and his fiancee's parents are also well off. She was massively shocked when I said I was paying for my own dress, and I have to admit that the b*tch in me wanted to give her a little slap, as she is the type to live off her parents even though she's in her mid-twenties (so is h2b's bro even though he's in his mid-thirties, but that's another story).

Hopefully we will not spend too much over the 12k we've put as the budget, although it's becoming more difficult as we're getting nearer. We're paying for most of it, OH is paying more overall as he earns more although I've got a second job which helps and my mum has kindly given us around £1000.

OH (lovely) parents haven't offered, but we never expected them to.

Total cost for overseas wedding, extravagant honeymoon and UK reception was about £20k. We expected to pay it all ourselves but In laws gave £2500 toward whatever we wanted and my parents put in £2k towards the honeymoon. Although on reality since the reception was £4.5k we see it as them paying for that.

How did we afford it? Mixture of savings and paying bills as they came in from monthly salary. No debt.

Thanks for replying to the thread everyone, it's really intersting, I'm so impressed by the people who are paying for a whole £12k ish wedding between them, so impressive we could never afford that much! We could only afford the £5k between us because we've got a credit card that's interest free for 16 months, but at least it means we're not getting into debt.

It's also good to see how many H2B's families are contributing their share in this thread, that's a bit of an (unspoken) issue with my wedding...

Just an interesting tidbit is just heard on the TV, apparently the average UK wedding is 10k, I'm assuming thats a median average by the feel of things

I never know what to believe when I hear the 'avergae' figures, I've heard anything from £10k - £20k depending on the source! I personally know very few people who have done it for less than £10k, and for us it wouldn't have been possible, unless we were willing to sacrifice the more expensive things e.g. just a DJ instead of band, fewer bridesmaids, cheap wedding dress etc.

I never added up the final total on the spreadsheet as it got a bit scary! My parents gave us £5k and H's parents paid for his jacket to be made and the booze so again about £5k and we paid for the rest. I think £20k would be a near estimate of the total

We were fortunate in that it just came from monthly savings and we didn't have to raslly 'save' as such but it's definately nice to have teh spare cash now.

H paid for the honeymoon which I think was £5/6kish

yeah, thats why i get the feeling peeps are using different types of 'averages' depending on how they wanna fudge the numbers for PR reasons.

Ours should come in at a little over £7k (I don't include the honeymoon in the wedding budget either).

We didn't expect anything from our parents - I'm turning 42 in a few days, never been married before and thought my parents must have given up hope by now ? We were fully expecting to pay for it all ourselves and were happy to do that. But my parents have said they will give us £5k and OH's parents have already said that they will give us something after the wedding.

We're going to have a mini-moon straight after the wedding, probably just a nice lodge with a hot tub in Scotland where we can just relax for a week or so. But then my sister and her husband both have a big birthday next year so we are planning to all go away together for a more luxurious holiday a few months after our wedding. We're definitely not going to scrimp on this holiday and we're expecting it to cost about £8k for the two of us. We will still have money from our own savings left over after the wedding and if we need to we'll get a manageable loan for the rest or put it on an interest free credit card. If we get any cash gifts from the wedding this will go towards it as well.

I am hoping that our budget will be £6000. Not including familymoon. Although my budget keeps rising when I realise how expensive everything is. My venue is £2600 which is pretty cheap compared to most, so we should be able to do the rest on £3k.

We budgeted to pay for it all ourselves but my step father has offered a thousand so I am debating whether to ask my dad for a bit, purely because I don't want him to feel embarrassed step father contributed and he didn't. I don't have parents with money so I never expected a penny.

Total cost inc honeymoon around £22,000. Had about £3500 from parents. The rest we are paying for. Very generous of them as we didn't want or expect anything.

I was speaking to OH this morning about our wedding and you know I would be happy to spend £500 in total as long as everyone we loved was there. Think there is no price on a wedding if unwell/deceased relatives can't be there. ?

Our budget is about £2500! We don't want a big Wedding and to be honest I don't really care about the "wedding" I just want to be married we don't have a lot of money and my mum definitely can't afford to help out and I wouldn't expect any money from anyone but OH mum has offered us £1000 which is incredibly nice of her! So we can do a bit of the "weddingy" bits.

My dad has kindly given us £6k which has covered the ceremony, venue, meal & reception. Oh grandparents (his mum is decreased) has paid for our honeymoon on the Norfolk broads plus is making our cake. My bridesmaids are paying for their own outfits. Everything else we are paying for but I've kept to a budget. Wedding will total approx £8.5k.

Not sure exactly how much our wedding budget it is yet, the venue/reception/meals is £4,400 so along with everything else i'll guess at around £7/8k.
My mum and dad don't have a lot of money but have been giving us roughly £200 whenever they can manage (sometimes a fortnight others a month)..they're separated so it's about £400 between them at a time which is a huge help with deposits and things. My grans kindly offered to give us a total of £800 towards it too, didn't expect or ask for any help from anyone so really appreciating their help Smiley smile
Paying for majority by ourselves though xx
