How average is your wedding...

GeordieBarbie, 28 January, 2010 at 13:22 Posted on Planning 0 27

Me and D were having a discussion about the average cost of a wedding these days and it seems in 2008, it was £22,858 (this figure includes honeymoon)

Makes quite interesting reading! It's funny to see where you fit into the "average".

CONDÉ NAST BRIDES have released their UK Wedding Industry survey results, and there are a number of positive figures showing. Here are some of the most interesting points:

  • The average overall cost of getting married is £22,858 (up from £21,901 in 2007)
  • Couples in London and the South East spend on average £23,932
  • Couples in Wales and the South West spend on average – £18,991
  • 53% of couples pay for most of the wedding costs
  • 35% of brides would consider cosmetic surgery for their wedding (an increase of 21% year on year)
  • 5% couples in the UK will sign a pre-nuptual agreement (7% of Scotish couples,6% of Londoners, 5% of Welsh couples and 2% of those in the Midlands and North/North East)
  • 88% of brides will take their husband’s surname once married. 3% will keep their own, while 7% of couples are combining surnames.
  • The average length of an engagement remains 18 months
  • 93% of couples plan to live together, or are already doing so, prior to their wedding.
  • The average engagement ring costs £2,090 (a 6.1% increase from 2007)
  • 61% of brides choose their own engagement ring
  • 3% of grooms will not wear a wedding ring
  • 45% of couples chose a religious ceremony
  • Brides in East Anglia spend most on flowers, at £750, spending 44% more than the UK average spend of £520.
  • Brides paid an average of £1,200 for their dress.
  • 17% of couples have their honeymoon in Europe.
  • Couples spend an average of £3,860 on their honeymoon.
  • The average age to get married for a bride is 29 and that of a groom is 31

It's funny - we're either way under or way over average! ? And it's very funny the things we are over and under on.

Apparently in 2002, the average was £11,000!

Very interesting reading! Some points are surprising too, like you say. Here's how we match:

Our wedding is around the 19k mark, so around 5k under average, especially as we're in the South East (but is way more than enough for us ?) We're paying for most of the wedding costs Wouldn't consider cosmetic surgery for the wedding Wouldn't consider a pre-nup Will be taking his name By the time of the wedding, we'll have been engaged over 4 years We've been living together 3 years already Engagement ring was well under average! Only £850...still love it though Did choose my own ring OH will be wearing a wedding ring We're having a civil ceremony Flowers looking like above average, around £800 at the moment! Dress under average, slightly at £995 We're having our honeymoon in Africa Only just over average with the honeymoon, ours is around the 4k mark Under average age of marriage, but knew that already....I'm just 23 and OH is 25.

    Good thread!

Well our total cost is well below average! We are paying for almost all our wedding ourselves Not considering cosmetic surgery!

I will be taking his surname We live together Our engagement length is more than that average

I sort of chose my own engagement ring and according to those stats was well well below average!

H2b is wearing a wedding ring Having religious ceremony

I'm not paying £750 for my flowers but I am in East Anglia!!

My dress is about £500 below average And the honeymoon is not far off that figure

I will be 30 when we marry and he will be 36!

Our budget is £10000 for the wedding and probably around £4000 for the honeymoon. I'm determined to get the wedding sorted for less than that though!

    We're paying for it ourselves

There is NO WAY I'd consider plastic surgery, I'm happy how I am

    No plans for a pre-nup

I'll probably take his surname but might have a change of plan and keep my own!

We'll have been engaged for 27 months when we get married

We've been living together for nearly 7 years

My engagement ring cost £650, I refused to have anything that was more than £800 even though he was happy to spend more! It just made me feel uncomfortable! I chose it myself too.

Mr Spoon is quite looking forward to wearing a wedding ring

    We're having a civil ceremony

I have no idea about flowers yet!

My dress will be less than £1000 (so easy to say when I haven't tried any on!), I'm aiming for around the £800 mark

Our honeymoon will be outside Europe, although I'm not sure where exactly!

I'll be 28 and he will be 29 when we get married

Ok I wont go through the whole thing but we are spending about £13k all together of which £3000 is on photography as we are both photographers and love good pictures and want the memories to last forever.

How much is evryone else spending on photography, cant remeber where I heard it (probably and old boss of mine) but on avaerage people usually spend 10 to 15% of their wedding budget on the photography

    - I know this is a little bit of cheeky market research but what the hey let me know!

Cost will be about £13k (in the SE)

Cost is being split 3 ways between us and both sets of parents

    No plastic surgery for me!

    No pre nup

    Will be taking OH's surname

    18 month engagement!

    We already live together

I apparently bump up the average on ER (£3000... ?)

    OH chose ER

OH will be wearing a ring

    Civil ceremony

Flowers have been kept to a real minimum - £120

Dress is £620 so half the average

Don't know where the HM will be or how much it will cost

    I will be 25 and OH 29
