How did your parents meet?

Erin8, 24 May, 2014 at 11:58 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 27

My Mum's best friend was going out with my Dad's oldest brother, my parents met on a blind date on New Years Eve 1970 when all 4 of them went out for the evening. My Mum thought my Dad was a drunken idiot! The next day he turned up at my Mum's house with load of records, she was impressed with his taste in music -especially Led Zeppelin! It went from there.

My mum and dad met at a dance on my mums 19th birthday 1964. My mum asked my dad how old he was and he told her he was 20 and she believed him. He was actually a month off his 16th birthday!!!! He had been working since he was 13 so not like the kids of today but still.... Just before his birthday he thought he'd better fess up. She misunderstood and thought he meant he was 16 and therefore was going to be 17. She made some comment about she supposed she could live with a 2 year age gap and so he agreed and let her believe that. He didn't tell her the truth until just before he proposed.?

At work. They both worked for Barnes & Crompton, which is now Unichem and where my dad still works (after a stint away as a milkman when I was a kid). ETA, that was in 1968, when my mum was 16 and my dad 19. They got married in 1971.

Mum was persuaded out by her sister my dad randomly decided he would split his walk home up with a drink at this pub. They met up following day dad couldn't remember what mum looked like but still claims he loved her from the moment they met outside the chip shop lol that was 1975 I think then they married 1976 :-)

My Grandma was my Mum's marriage guidance counsellor!

Mum was married previously, but separated, and was going to Relate for counselling. One evening she went to the theatre and bumped into her counsellor there. They chatted for a bit, and during the interval her counsellor introduced Mum to her son (obviously not telling him how they knew each other), who was working behind the theatre bar...

My Mum was on a girls' night out and she was the designated driver. My Dad caught her tipping away a drink because it had alcohol in it and he bought her a lemonade to replace it. He then kind of stalked her until she gave in and went out with him! Possibly one of the worst decisions she ever made, but hey ho, eventually they had me, and she says that makes up for it.

They worked for the same company, dad was a researcher and my mum a secretary, not sure how they actually started going out, but they were engaged after 6 months and married after 1 year. Oh, and my mum was engaged to someone else at the time whe she first started seeing my dad, both the guys knew, her fiancé apparently just didn't really care! They've been married 40 years next year, oh, and her wedding dress is the one previously purchased for the 'other' wedding-she soon learnt how much my dad is a tad tight with money!

They met at butlins! They were teenagers living at opposite ends of the country. They met up 3 times before my mum decided to move in with him. They've been married 41 years this year.

My dad was in the British Navy, on the Atlantic patrol - his submarine would go down to the Caribbean and patrol for 6 months at a time. One year, while there, his ship went up to St Pete, FL and docked for a week. It was Christmas, and the local yacht club threw the ship a cocktail party. My mum and her friend went to the party, "to meet British officers". She met my dad - 14 years older, and in the midst of his second divorce. Quite the catch! They ended up spending the next 4 days together, then started sending letters back and forth, and met up again for a week on his shore leave that February. At that point, they had spent less than 2 weeks in each other's company, but my dad offered to send my mum an open return ticket to the UK, when he returned from his patrol. She accepted, and moved to the UK about 6 months later. They lived together in London for 6 months before my dad proposed, and then got married 6 months after that, in June 1980. I put their marital longevity down to the fact that my dad stopped serving on submarines after they got married!

    That's a brilliant story Helenia!

My parents met on the motorway on the way to a West Ham match. They were stuck in a standstill and my dad went to say hello to a mutual friend who was in the same car as my mum.

    I love Helenia's too!

My parents met at teacher training college in London. I think that they met through mutual friends and they are still in touch with some of them today. They have been married for 46 years this year.

My parents bumped into each other on a night out, in 1982. It was my Mums first night out, after having my sister, 6 weeks beforehand (she split with her ex when she was pg) My Mum was 19, my Dad was 24.

They got married shortly after, and had 3 daughters together, including their greatest achievement - me!!

They split up in 1991, but got back together in 2012, and were re-married last year, after over 20 years apart. True love!!!

In the back of a mutual friends car apparently. She was 16 he was 19. That's all I know.

My in laws met the exact same way I met my H, his mam worked in the social club behind the bar and his dad was a very persistent customer. His dad was 10 years younger than his mum and she took a lot of persuasion!

My Mum met my Dad through her cousin who was at the time dating my dads brother.

They started talking about music and their love for Queen, Slade and other rock 70's bands at the time and it all went from there!

I'm not really sure. The less said about that idiot the better. But I know they were both married and when they broke down they got together but not sure of the specifics.

My mum was a widow with two young girls, she went to a singles club (gingerbread?) with another woman she had met and as they walked into a disco, my dad was passed out on the floor drunk. Mum helped pick him up.

Its like Romeo and Juliet mark two.

I love the story of my parents getting together. They knew each other as kids because my mum was friends with my dad's sister. They both got married young (to other people) and so did my auntie, and the three couples basically all ended up with each others' partners.

My auntie's husband had an affair with my dad's first wife and both couples got divorced.

My mum felt sorry for my auntie and invited her out a lot with her and her first husband. My auntie brought my dad (her brother) along to make up the gang as he was also on his own.

My auntie then had an affair with my mum's first husband and they moved in together.

This then left my mum and dad to take the next natural step...

I tell people that I was the result of a 1970's wife swapping scandal. My parents wish I wouldn't say that.

My grandparents got divorced so my nan along with my mum moved from Suffolk to Derby. Meanwhile, my dad was in the only job he has ever had (still there to this day) my mum started working there once she moved to the area and they started dating. Dad was too shy to ask her to marry him, so mum had to do the proposal! 32 years on and still going strong Smiley smile

My parents met in a pub! My Dad was buying loads of crisps for his friends, my Mum commented on how many bags he was buying...and the rest is history! They had both been married before (married very young). When I met OH, I was introduced to one of his friends...the name rang a bell...yes my OH is good friends with Mum's first husband. Awkward!

Mum and Dad were childhood sweethearts aged 5 in primary school - they split up to go secondary school and didn't meet again until a new year's eve party (the families knew each other) when they were 20! It's a sickeningly sweet story.

They both proposed to one another one evening when drunk and then Dad proposed again properly a few weeks later.

Mine met in the pub. My grandparents were the landlords and my dad used to do the odd shift behind the bar (and was on the other side of it getting drunk when not working). Mum came in with her friends, one of her friends started going out with one of his friends and the rest was history. That was 35 years ago.

Mine met at university. They were talking in a group and my mum was saying how she needed a particular book but didn't have time to go and get it. My dad trekked out in the snow to the nearest bookstore and bought it for her, as an excuse to knock on her door. It was an Embryology textbook ?

My Mum and Dad went to school together, so they've known each other since they were 12. When Dad was 14 he moved in next door to Mum and he asked her out after a few weeks, Mum had fancied him for ages but at 14 all my Dad was bothered about was girls and he 3 timed my Mum ha!! She stuck with him, and at 19 they got married! Been married ever since, 35 years this year and they are completely head over heels in love with each other now. I ask my Mum often what the key is to their happiness and she tells me the same thing, Dad makes her laugh, he always has and they really are a match made in heaven! If I can be half as happy as they are that's good enough for me.

My mum and dad met at grammar school.

When my dad remarried after being widowed/er (urgh) he met my second mum through an advert in the local paper. They exchanged letters and agreed to have a blind date in a bar, she said she would be wearing a pink jacket over a black dress and he would be wearing a blue waistcoat - sweet or what!!

I have no idea! I know all the gory details of how and why they split up but none of the nice or good stuff. Sad really.
