How do i get it dirty??

teeheeyoucrazyguys!, 4 November, 2008 at 16:14 Posted on Planning 0 12

Hahha Ok quick question before I go out and be dramatic with my lil dahlings...

I just got my chain from ebay via hong kong and its shinier than a shiny thing!! This is for my ole Victorian pendant.(brooch)

How on earth do I age it?? wear it from now to the wedding day perhaps? Bury it in the garden? Dont want to age it via paints n sprays coz that'll come off so if anyone has any idea how to age silver, answers on a postcard please. Smiley smile Maybe it cant be but sheesh, I needed shades when removing it from the envelope (me thinks its not as real as the advert said it would be)

ta!

Crumbs! I haven't got a clue. I know that silver tarnishing is caused by oxidization, but if it isn't real silver, then chances are that it won't.

    I'm wracking my brain here!

I'll get back to you when I think of something useful.

Could you use sandpaper to take off some of the shine? Really fine grain of course.

Don't suppose you could use permanent ink to blacken it a bit?

    Probably daft ideas!

Maybe something like put it in a bottle of Coke....might corrode it and damage the metal a bit? I am just guessing though!!

I know coke takes rust off, but not sure what it would do to silver.

Red wine? I know it sounds a bit mad.

Nona, I've got this image now in my head of you being like a mad scientist trying all these ideas and cackling wildly!

Some good suggestions there on how to tarnish silver including what crafty em said about bleach.

If it is from china, it will be silver plate on brass alloy, if you wear the silver plate away it will show a coppery colour. Silver plate loose colour naturally if left out, depends how much time you have till your wedding!

Ok thats fine..... it should turn in 8 months! advert said 'in 925 silver' so i naively thought all silver. Its very heavy mind you.... thanks for the advice!

Ahh if it is 925 then it will definitely start to turn in 8 months, leave it out of the box and watch is go darker over the months!
