How do i make my hair do this...

Flickerty, 2 February, 2012 at 21:40 Posted on Planning 0 23

I'm getting married in Santorini and am pretty miffed with the costs of hair and make-up out there. I'd already decided to do my own make up but am now wondering whether to do my own hair as well... or rather get my unsuspecting good-with-hair bridesmaid to do it for me. This is the sort of thing I want and we're planning to have a few practice runs to see how it goes.

Any tips or pointers would be appreciated - do you think curling wand or rollers?

My hair is long and fine... and not great at holding curls ?

Is it worth getting you hair dresse herer to talk your bridesmaid through it? might be easier to be taught that work it out - if you see what I mean! Also, if a pro does it and the curls don't hold you will know that you may have to rethink...

Although I think the wands are pretty good, ass are heated rollers, but my hair tends to hold a curl pretty well!

If Ive got this wrong and Im not supposed to plug my company then im sorry in advance. Dont quote me and I can always delete the post.

I work at Nicky Clarke. If you go to the home page (nickyclarke.com) or search him on you tube you should get lots of little video tutorials, each about 5 minutes in length. Im not sure if theres one which will give you the style in 5 minutes (I know theres one video where he does an up do, so thatll give you an idea on pinning your hair and he does 2/3 seperate ones with curls)

I would definately advise doing a trial run yourself id you say your hair doesnt hold curls very well; itll give you enough time to find another style if your not 100% happy. The videos should also tell you.which products will help get the desired effect.

Hope this helps (and i hope i dont get into trouble for advertising)

Definitely do a trial run and do it early in the day to see how it lasts.

My hair doesn't keep a curl at all, at my friend's hair trial I got it curled pretty tight with GHDs but was straight again by the time I got home so we had to switch to a curly side bun type do.

How about trying to curl your hair over night - your hair might hold the curl longer. It will still drop, but it may hold longer than using a curling wand or rollers.

Here's a tutorial I found on youtube, tried and blogged about - http://www.thesmallthingsblog.com/p/hair-style-tutorials.html

I also like this blog for hair tutorials - http://www.thesmallthingsblog.com/p/hair-style-tutorials.html

I think the key is to keep practicing and experimenting and finding what works and which products are best for your hair.

I would say curling tongs or straighteners used for curling would give that type of curl rather than rollers.

Im no expert but my friend is very good with up-do's and she swears by using nothing but bobby grips and hairspray, never a bobble. So I would have a test run curling it (I am assuming you can do that! It's quite simple if you have the tools, watch a video and have patience). Then once it's curled it needs spraying to hold the curl, then start pinning up curl by curl until enough is off your face. Then start working the pinned up curls into a neat ish messy bin shape, with more pins. Then spray more hairspray!!!

This is actually a simple up do.

Wash ur hair the night before and put mousse on then dry with volume. On the wedding day use a curl spray (i use well curl artist but think it been discontinued but can still get it from ebay/amazon) take sections of hair and using GHD's curl the hair in diff directions to give a more natural effect. Remember to curl tighter than u need as they will drop. once complete let ur hair cool for a few minutes then run ur fingers throgh ur hair to break up the curl a little and apply hair spray.

Using kirby grips that match ur hair colour pull hair back and kiCULARrby securly in place at the back. When pulling hair back remember not to be too particular and not to pull it too tight. The beauty of this style is the 'no effort' look.

Have fun trial nights with ur BM before hand.

Good Luck, flash us photos of ur trials when u do them!

Curling spray, curling iron, bobbi pins, and hairspray. All you need. Then again, some people have hair that really can't hold a curl. My friend Ana is filipino and has very thick straight hair and not even a perm could make it curly!

While I would normally be all for doing my own hair like this, I think I would want the piece of mind a pro would give to make me know it was going to stay up all day!

I am having a similar style for my wedding. I need to buy extensions for my hair, more for volume rather than length. My hairdresser advised to buy ones with clips already attached.

They fitting easily, could do myself, and really helped with the style, they curled them before putting them in my hair.

They then took pieces and pinned with kirby grips in my hair, messily, then rearranged as needed.

I would think its quite easy to do on someones hair xx

Ive gone through my wedding prep pics and this one is the best 'being built' photo! she curled it all with a curling tong then seemed to build it up from the bottom!

    some of the finished do

    hope this helps!!!

IMHO if your hair doesn't hold a curl and you are depending on a friend to do it for you - why put yourself yourself through that stress on your big day? I would advise finding a style that you love equally as much but you know a) suits your fine hair and b) can be done by you or your BM without stress! AND you know won't have flopped within the first hour.

A tip if your hair doesnt hold curls well..when you wash it, do NOT condition it!! the curls slip out as conditioner makes the hair silky!

These are the tongs I've got:

I would then probably gather the hair in a loose low ponytail at the back and then clip bits up and around the ponytail. Alternatively, just use clips. Agree with Flow not to condition your hair. And use lots of hairspray because the curl will fall.

ETA - I've just noticed there are a few different sizes of that wand on amazon and I'm not sure what mine is. If you like the look of it I can measure mine at home tonight.

I have really fine hair which sits just below my shoulder. I often put my hair up like this. I have really fine hair which wont hold a curl for more than 2hrs ish.

I found using a curling wand was better than rollers, tongs etc (although i have to have the highest heat setting) I also dont condition my hair when curling it. I also found moose worked great (the best iv found is Schwarzkopf Silhouette ) My curls stay in all day with this. Also invest in a doughnut! pull the curls through the doughnut , dont put you hair in a bobble and just pin you hair around the doughnut, messily. I deffo recommend a few trials before to make sure you get it how you want it, it took me 3-4 attempts to get it right. hope this has been helpfull x

I have looked at these pics too, I also have the same issues, my hair drops. I wsa told by a hairdrsser not to condition my hair for 2 weeks prior to the trial and the wedding day. Not sure if this works or not!!

Wow thanks everyone for all your replies - what a helpful bunch of people!! Some great tips and suggestions, I'm going to arrange a few dates with my bridesmaid so we can start experimenting - I'll be sure to update with pictures. I have a curling wand which is the only thing that has held a curl on me, and that was with my rubbish hair skills so hopefully my bridesmaid will get it even better. If it doesn't work out, i'll just have to shell out on the pro to do it. Unfortunately I wouldn't get time for a trial though as it's abroad.

Another question, do you think a side tiara would work with this sort of do? Maybe a bit like this one...

    http://www.glitzysecrets.com/precious-sensation-side-tiara.html

I'm not wearing a veil so it would be nice to have a bit of glitz on me bonce!

Yep side tiara will look lovely. Remember to put in in after curling before pulling all the hair back to hide the band a bit.

    Good Luck

I had to have a little go (i really am no hairdresser lol) at this so got my daugter to be my guinea pig, she has very straight hair, difficult to curl and hold, it turned out quite nice i thought, maybe the curls a bit too high but perfect for my shop photo's, it was actually really easy so you really shouldnt have and problems diy Smiley smile
