Hi Hitchers

Did you find it easy to pick your colours for your wedding?

I really don't have a clue!!

We have ruled out certain colours............I keep leaning towards purple but I really like blue!!

Flashes welcome.

I found it extremely hard, a lot of people try to pick something from the venue, but we are having a marquee and therefore very blank cavas to work from.

My advise would be to go looking with your bridesmaid, see what colour suits them best and go from there. I ended up with plum, never thought I would!

    They are lovely dresses.

It's all the different shades of blue and purple that is mind-blowing.

I haven't decided on bridemaids yet. I'm having two flower girls but struggling on adult bridesmaids............I have my sister and 2 close friends. That will mean 5 bridesmaids and not sure what I can afford yet. My heart says have all 5 my mind says stick to the flower girls.

I think it's very hard to settle on colours.

I will probably end up with mostly white with a touch of pink... Not original but my favourite colours Smiley smile

What time of the year are you getting married, as that can lend itself to ideas.

Winter - ice blue, christmassy colours etc.

Spring - yellow and bright colours.

Summer - pastel colours, village fetes etc.

Autumn - forest colours, reds, greens, yellows, golds, oranges, browns etc.

As already said, your venue may influence it too - you may find that the colours you like would clash terribly with the carpet or curtains.

We had an autumnal wedding, in the new forest, so our colours were easy to pick. The venue also came ready-decorated to match!

We got engaged on Christmas day and I decided on the colours of my Christmas decorations i.e. red and purple!

I originally wanted all the same colour purple but over the year, we have incorporated lots of different shades of purple and it's shaping up to look quite nice fingers crossed.

So if you can't choose which shade, maybe go for a couple of different ones?

I think the venue is very neutral but are going back in nov to se it finished.

I love the idea of different shades of dresses if I decided to have the 3 adult bridesmaids.

I'm being cheeky but can anyone flash different colourerd dresses with bridesmaids wearing them

I struggled to decide too. We're having a June wedding and originally wanted pale gold and cream colours however then decided a summery splash of colour would be nice so have eventually decided on dusky pink, silver and ivory as our venue provides ivory linen and my dress is ivory and we also have silver candelabras.

far2calmbride2be - I absolutely love your bridesmaids dresses, please can I be cheeky and ask where they're from?

Relatively easy although changed a few times in the early days.

There were a few combinations I liked - pink and sage green was one but Mr C didn't like green... turquoise and brown, but Mr C wanted a grey suit and I don't like grey and brown... a few others that got disregarded for one reason or another... then I was inspired by a turquoise and purple orchid which I wanted in my bouquet, as it happens it was too expensive to have them but I stuck with the turquoise anyway and used ivory and green orchids in our flowers and on our stationery.

It was a nice bright colour which would have remained so if the March weather wasn't as kind to us as it was...

I'm not a big fan of very bright colours and love neutral pale colours like pale pinks and greens. I really wanted to be able to use pale pinks and greens but by the time its come to getting the bridesmaid dresses none of my maids suit pale green or pink and they all fell in love with a navy blue evening gown, so thats what we're now having.

It won't be too difficult to match to the venue which is different blues and dark bluey purples anyway. I think i want to put it with pale pink though to lift the colour, as we're getting married in august and i don't want it to be too dark.

Have a look on www.pinterest.com You can create your own board and add to it so you can see how it would look together.

I think for me, it was more of a case of ruling out the colours I don't like and didn't want- Purple, blue or green. It then gave me more colours to play with and work out what we wanted, more neutral pastal shades ?

I wasn't totally sure and found the wedding blogs like lovemydress very helpful as they feature a lot of real weddings and mood boards that show you how different colours can be combined. I don't want to give you more to think about but the style/theme to your wedding can be helpful to make up your mind (if you have one). I love purple and although part of me didn't want to do what everyone was expecting of me I didn't feel anything else would be 'me'. After seeing various photos on blogs I decided to do a lavendar/lilac and yellow scheme, with the yellow as the contrast/detail colour. Some pictures which helped me:

I wanted purple. i was mad about it, dead set on it... and then i saw this BM dress and thought WOW i want that

its going so well, and apart from everyone going "ORANGE?!" (im now referring to it as cinnamon) its great, flowers are so lovely and im having tiny orange lanterns fr table decs... so gorgeous!

I wanted one of 3 colours - purple, blue or green. In the end we chose purple because of the bridesmaid dresses. Our budget would onl allow for high street dresses so we were more limited on colour choice.

Fairly easy - I fell for a fabric sample when discussing my own dress with the dressmaker. It's a silvery purple. As there was already a moorland theme floating (table names) colours have become purple, silver, white/ivory and a touch of yellow in the table decorations. Silver is largely because (a) I like it and am a white gold or silver jewellery person (b) silver shoes are more practical than ivory and (c) silver is much easier to match up than a random (discontinued!) "mineral blue" colour!..

We are having royal blue, just because we both really liked the colour, however i am now thinking about a bit of silver to break it up a bit, as its a really strong colour, and its hard to find some bits and pieces in royal blue. I havent really got any flashes at the mo, apart from a BM dress I have my eye on:

The OH and I didn't really have many options because he didn't want green or brown and I didn't want pink, purple, lilac or red ? We're an awkward bunch ? and navy was a happy medium, plus the OH wore his uniform which is a really, really dark blue.

Well, I love Fall colors. I will choose white ,red, and even some colors match fall.

An autumn wedding is full of bounty and rich color. With pops of orange, red and yellow, and plenty of opportunities to rejoice in cooler weather, fall is the perfect time to celebrate love and life.

You will find your fittest color in fall.

    Love the blue Nik Nak

Thanks everone. There is an open evening at my venue in a few weeks. Hopefully it will be finished and then I can see if any particular colour jumps out of me.

I think I just expected to know straight away.....

My 3yr old niece informed me last night that she was wearing pink......which is the one colour OH ruled out (and green too)

We went through a whole load of colour schemes and kept changing our minds, but ultimately we ruled out pink because (personally) I think it looks as though the groom had bugger all to do with the wedding as its very rare that a groom would say "ooooh i'd love to have a pink wedding!", didn't want purple as it seemed to be done a lot around the time of our wedding and we wanted something a bit different, and red just because we didn't like it! We also decided not to have black suits on the men just because we (again, personally!) thought it might look a bit morbid. Not saying black shouldn't be worn at weddings, we just didn't want it at ours, so they all wore navy blue or grey suits.

In the end I was flicking through a wedding magazine and found a picture of bridesmaids in navy blue with green flowers and we both loved it! We thought it looked really smart, classy and was quite unusual so we went with it! Had a few occasions were we thought "navy...green...really??!!! Will it work??!!!" but it did and we're so happy with how the colours looked it the photos.

Good tip is just to imagine the colours being on your photos and hung up around your house, you mind automatically decide then that some colours would date or just look garish if you had to look at it every day. Good luck!

OH didn't want girly colours and I personally loved the idea of all white with just the greenery of the flowers for colour. When I started searching on Google and magazines I kept getting to drawn to champagne and Ivory or white which was subtle enough,
so my mind was made up.

It was easy for me to decide because I always wanted my bridesmaids in blue and my husband and bestman wouldn't object to a blue tie as the colour suits them. When it came to our flowers I put my faith entirely in the hands of our very artistic florist. She was fantastic. I initially thought about strong colours and this is how it looked. These aren't the best pics with my girls but it's all i've got at work.

    Good luck choosing!

Oh no I totally agree with you :-) which i why I said a groom rarely says he'd love a pink wedding. My hubby has a pale pink tie which he looks rather dashing in and I do like pink and even had a shade of pale pink in my bouquet but ultimately its not a colour that our guests will remember the wedding by which is what we wanted. All down to personal preference. Me and my hubby had an equal say on anything, his opinion was as important as mine etc. and that worked well for us, but neither of us wanted pink. It all comes down to which pink and how much of it if anything! I absolutely love the fuscia and orange colour schemes in flowers and think they look stunning at a wedding but I wouldn't then go as far as having the bridesmaids in fuscia too...make sense?

I was adamant I wanted purple and went out looking for purple bridesmaid dresses however when I got to the bridal shops my eye kept being drawn by the sage green. The bm dress they all liked was actually in the sage green and they all suited it and loved it so I changed the colour of BM dresses.

So my colours are sage green and ivory with little traces of silver! My wedding dress and BM dresses arrived today in the shop and when they were tried on together they looked absolutely gorgeous so I know now I made the right choice - plus OH is very happy as he hated the purple but didnt tell me until I changed the colours as he wanted me to be happy bless him!

I found it really easy to pick my colours. I only really wear black pink and purple, so those were my colours.

I had a black dress with purple polka dots and metallic hot pink Dr Martens, my H and youngest son wore black shirts, and my eldest son wore a purple shirt. H also wore a purple tie, and purple converse.

Luckily, My H was more than happy to go along with what I wanted, even the Hello Kitty theme we had. Bless him. x

Again, Thank you for all your replies and advice.

I have been looking at Navy and lemon/yellow. OH doesn't/won't wear a navy suit so would a grey suit go?

Am I thinking about this too much??
