how long did it take you to find THE dress?

midlandsbride2013, 30 July, 2012 at 16:51 Posted on Planning 0 22

Started my dress shopping today! Very exciting, but after trying on many, many dresses, nothing is quite right. I have however started to narrow down the style I would like. How long did it take all you lovely ladies to find your dresses?

Well I've tried on about 25 and still haven't found it haha. Although, quite a few of those were me just trying on a bunch of different styles to see what I liked and what suited me, so like you, I have been narrowing down to the style I like Smiley smile

LOADS! I actually found the process quite stressful because one of my BMs seemed intent on slating everything that I really liked! Not surprisingly, I found my dream dress when she wasn't there haha!

I think I done about 20 different dresses in 4 different shops and brought about the 12th one in the 3rd shop in the end, I was pretty set on it but just wanted to make sure, tried some on after but nothing measured up to the one that I loved so went back tried it on again, stuck a veil and side hairband on my head and felt like a bride!! SOLD!

Tried on about 15-20 dresses I think, (lost count) in 5 different shops. Picked mine out then kept looking incase, confused myself and stuck with original x

Two shops, both with an hour appointment and tried about 6 on in each shop (randomly picked off the shelf). It was the first one in the second shop that I ended up with having slept on it for a week and trying it on on my own to double check

It took me about 6-8 different shops and was starting to feel stressed and dejected but then I found it - it's the one I didn't want to take off! My advice would be to chill unless you are in the 6 months mark as they take a few months to design and make etc

I went to about 10 shops, tried on many many dresses. Had a short list and narrowed it down by trying them all on again.

I knew what I wanted and had seen similar dresses online - colour, style, length. Nowhere had it (I tried 6 bridal shops) but one shop said a designer they used could modify 2 of their designs, combining them to get my perfect dress. So I ordered it, with 9 months to go to the wedding.... and 8 days before the wedding, I found out it wouldn't arrive on time ??

So I went to Vivien of Holloway 7 days before the wedding, thinking I could just get an ivory dress which would be *almost* exactly what I'd ordered anyway... only there I found a lace-covered version and utterly fell in love - it was TOTALLY 'the one'. I just wish I'd gone to their shop first as I'd always loved it online, but got drawn into that silly 'must go to a bridal shop' train of thought.

I tried 5 on in the first shop i went to, the third one was 'the one'. I tried on two more after just to make sure I was going for the right style. When I got home I realised it was on my favourites list from when I first started looking at dresses on the net and then I knew it was meant to be!

I've worked out that I've tried on about 65 dresses... ! in about 10 different shops. We are having a short engagement, so in a way I think that's why I've tried on quite a lot - because I was trying to be open-minded and try stuff on even if I didn't think I particularly liked it, IF it was one where they could order it in time, or I could buy the sample. Also I was reluctant to spend a fortune on a dress I would only wear for one day, so I tried on any/all that were reduced, just in case I liked it!

I found a whole rail of reduced ones in a bridal 'outlet' store and tried on any that looked vaguely suitable. Also at a shop that was closing down. After a final trying-on session yesterday, I have decided to stick with one I bought at the beginning in a charity bridal store, which was a heavily reduced ex-sample dress that had been donated to them (cost £200). So it was in fact from the first place that I tried dresses on! If I hadn't already bought it, though, I might have been more tempted by one of the £700 ones I tried on yesterday ?

I went to 4 shops, but ended up buying the dress I tried on third in the first shop. I just wanted to continue dress shopping and be totally sure it was 'the one'. When I went to the fourth shop the lady there has a reputation for picking out perfect dresses for brides and she choose it for me to try on first. I originally tried it on in a size too small, it was the right size this time and it just confirmed to me that it was the one that she picked it out and trying it on in my size. Plus there were tears from my mum and sister...

I went into a shop with a pic of what I 'definitely' wanted and they pulled one out that was scarily similar. It looked amazing, but was ivory and I'd always wanted a white dress. She said they could order it in white but that it can sometimes make people look washed out so grabbed one of only 2 white dresses they ahd in stock. It was the complete opposite of the pic I had, but she said to just ignore the dress and just check the colour. I got it on, and it fit perfectly, except the length. I walked out of the changing room and asked my mum what she thought of the colour. She just grinned and said yeh I prefer white. I thought she was just ebing weird so I turned around and looke in the mirror and fell in love. I'm so glad I was stubborn on the whole white thing or I never would've tried it one.

I've tried on ones since that have been gorgeous, but I always say 'it would be nicer if this bit was like this, like in the white one I tried'.

Only problem is mum is paying for it and its £1,200 Smiley sad I really feel like I should keep looking and find something cheaper, but I love it so much and don't know if it would be obvious to her if I was settling. She said she doesn't mind as she still has 22 months to save up. Anybody else having a dress bought for them and feels guilty at the price? x

I tried on about 7 dresses in one shop and none of them matched up to the first one I tried so I bought that one!

The funny thing is, I only tried that one on to keep my mum happy as she was the one who spotted it and really liked it. I thought I'd try it on first to get it out of the way and I ended up falling in love with it. Smiley laugh

I tried one on a few months back and left it for a while. I went dress shopping the week before last to a different shop and tried around 10 or so on, they were nice but definitely not the one. Last week i went back to the very first one i tried on and still felt WOW, now bought ?.

I bought the first dress i tried on in the first shop i went to ?

I was fully expecting to be trawling the whole of the North West for months so was actually gob smacked when i stumbled across "the one" straight away.

I printed out a load of pictures from the internet of dresses & styles i liked the look of to take with me and i have to say my dress is absolutely nothing like any of them.

Just enjoy the experience and dont stress too much - i'm almost a little disappointed that i found my dress so quickly as i loved it when we went shopping. It's not often you get to spend the day dressing up when you're 31 xx
