How long to reply to an email?

Pittabre, 15 October, 2014 at 16:10 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

I email my Ex about issues related to the children as that way I have a copy of what has been discussed and can remind him what has been agreed. I sent him an email on Monday asking about plans for Christmas. He hasn't acknowledged nor replied to the email. How long is reasonable to expect someone to at least acknowledge or reply to a personal email? His messages go straight to his phone so he would know as soon as it was received (he isn't the sort of person that would go days without checking his email, he would read it as soon as he receievd it).

And for those of you that don't understand why I am trying to discuss Christmas arrangements with him now, it usually takes quite a long time to get confirmation from him one way or another about things and I need to organise childcare aroudn work arrangements and that takes time as well. Although the subject matter isn't important but rather how long would you expect a reply to take?

I'd give him till the end of the week so that he can't use the excuse that he was finding out what he was doing first before getting back to you. I think that's a fair amount of time. I know ex's can be a pain in the wotsit like that so better to give as less ammo as poss.

Personally, when someone I know emails me I respond almost immediately, like I would a text message. But in my office we are 'allowed' 5 days to get back to people's messages, any more than that and you get a slap on the wrist. Personally I think 5 is too long as you would have expected a reply by then IMO.

Cheers both. I know he will be doing it as another control thing and I don't want him to think he is controlling me anymore. Originally we had the agreement that he would acknowledge emails within 48 hours, but as that has passed I assume he has 'forgotten' that proviso. A woman at work said she thinks I should say you haven't replied therefore this is going to happen... But I'm not sure that would work either.

I wouldn't say any hard or fast rule tbh as it totally depends on the person and scenario. So it would be more about what's normal for communication between the 2 of you.

It's only Weds, there could be very good reason why he hasn't replied yet. If it is because he's checking on things his end then it would be courteous of him to reply to acknowledge at least.

I'd personally say give it till Friday and then maybe follow up just for an acknowledgment at least.

Still hadn't replied nor even acknowledged email as of this morning (9 days on). Sent him an email saying I expecta a response by Friday or we'll make arrangements without him and got an instant response saying he can't make any plans because he is supposed to be moving (this ahs been the case since September). I am susrprised that eh can't make any plans at Christmas though... I've said we will make plans without him then.

This infuriates me, because at the end of the day, as a parent, I'm guessing you always have to out the kids first, so while he's being an a*se and you would be perfectly within your rights to say 'Right you've had your chance to let me know what you want to do with the kids over Christmas - I've now filled up their schedules' ... I'm guessing the kids will want to see him, so even though he's not cooperating with you, you still have to make provision for what he may or may not want to do.

Urgh - I feel for you.

I have now told him when he is seeing the children over Christmas and he has just agreed to it. Grrr, should I just this every year? Say you'll see the kids on these dates and leave it at that??? Obviously having no over nighters<roll eyes>
