how many extra calories when breastfeeding?

ellie1, 10 June, 2009 at 14:17 Posted on Beauty & Wellbeing 0 4

I've recently had a baby and I'm. Not. On. A. Diet ?

But I am trying to be a bit careful because I've been eating my bodyweight in junk and rather than losing the baby weight I'll start to gain more if I go on like this. Trouble is I'm ruddy starving all the time.

Anyone know how many extra calories you're supposed to eat when breastfeeding?

I'm going to aim to eat plenty, but good stuff rather than snickers and mcoys crisps. Would be interested to know what my rough daily calorie intake shoud be.

Thanks ?

When exclusively breastfeeding, it's 500 extra calories a day, so the equivelant of an extra sandwich and piece of fruit really. Not as much as we'd like to think!!

    Thanks, that's great.

500 doesn't seem like much - I dread to think how many I've been eating! I was good yesterday but stil felt hungry despite eating really quite a lot.

Oh well hopefully when my baby is feeding a bit less I'll feed less too ?

Just be careful that you don't carry on eating alot once your baby feeds less. I made that mistake and put on over ½ stone very quickly.

I am doing weightwatchers as I need to shift the baby weight from three babies, preferably by my husband's 40th in September but I want to cry as I am so hungry all the time. I was starving all the time when feeding the other two but just ate what I wanted and gained half a stone after having them but I am being good this time, eating the right things but I am miserable and hungry. ?

    Lmsunshine soooo true ?

Today I am mostly ravenous. Despite eating quite a lot (of good stuff) I feel hungry and miserable! Waaah.

The thing is I only fit into 2 pairs of trousers and hardly any tops which is such a horrible feeling. Even if I could shift half a stone I could get back into a few bits from my wardrobe.

Surely being awake in the night means I should burn more calories than sleeping. But after being good since saturday I've lost nothing. Humph.
