How many people here stopped for the 2 minute silence.?

bobbly1, 10 November, 2008 at 03:20 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 26

We did today, as a mark of respect (well, we were at a church service so everyone there did)

The local busses also pulled in to the side of the road turned off their engines and stopped for 2 minutes. I think that is a nice respectful thing to do, and well done to the bus companies for organising it.

I was asleep after a night shift but anyway I would observe the two minute silence at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, which is Tuesday. At work they always put out an announcement over the PA system to remind us and people take their phones off the hook for the duration.

Yes, I did. Even my 21 month old sensed something was required of him, and was silent for the duration - which is nothing short of incredible ?

We did, even the children managed it. I'll do so again tomorrow as well.

Yup - was at a Service though, so we had the whole bugle shebang to focus us.

I was actually driving my son home from football but we listened to the build up on Radio 5 and we both observed it together. There were workmen working on the M62 who downed tools which I thought was a nice touch.

I did too, but unlike your son, Daniel did not observe the two minutes. He was making little noises, so I thought I'd rub his back to try and keep him quiet, which was a huge mistake as he then burped loudly. I was so embarrassed.

I did, with my 22 month old son. I set him up with a snack and he watched in total silence only interrupting to point at the Queen and ask 'who's attt' ?

I did. I had to rush home from the stables, abandon my car in the pub car park because our road was closed because we live by the war memorial, then run home in my jodhpurs and riding boots, quite a sight that must have been. It was important to get home to my H as he finds the day very hard. Our cat decided to miow through most of it though.

I will observe the silence tomorrow too.

I did. We were smack bang in the middle of an acting class, but at 11am everyone stopped to observe the silence.

Erm, what 2 minute silence? I imagine there's one tomorrow because it's the eleventh of the November but what's it for today?

We were in Comet and I turned to H and said "we should stop talking". So we did but presumed everyone else would carry on - I was impressed that almost everyone in the store stopped and observed the silence. I was slightly disappointed that they continued playing the music etc as felt it should have been switched off.

I did, so did everyone in my house at the time.

It was a very moving programme yesterday, especially the interviews with the families of those killed most recently in Afganistan.

Emma - you must lead a sheltered life. Forgive me, but I thought most adults knew yesterday was Armistice Sunday?

We will have a 20minute silence here - they sound the fire alarm at the start and finish for us.

I imagine Emma was confused by the original poster who said they had done the silence today.

I don't think thats fair. i also didn't do a silence yesterday as AFAI was aware the 2 min silence is at 11am on the 11/11. I don't ever recall doing two.

No offence intended to emma numbers, that's why I said 'forgive me' in my post. I honestly thought most people realised. It's probably just my great age - I sometimes asume everyone knows what I know (which, when it comes doen to it, is not a lot!). Sorry, Emma!

The two minutes silence on Remembrance Sunday has been observed for years. It's the two minutes silence on 11am on 11/11 that's only recently (I think in the 1990s) been observed once again, that's why I'm surprised people seem more aware of the 11/11 silence than Remembrance Sunday.

Thanks Beast, that's right. I have a hard time remembering what day of the week it is and it confused the hell out of me with people talking about two minute silences today, yesterday and tomorrow. ?

    No worries GMT.

Though I can understand the 2 minute silence tradition for Remembrance Sunday I do think it's in danger of losing it's poignancy by being overused.

Sorry for the confusion! - I posted at 3.20am and it was still Sunday to me (if you see what I mean!)
