How many photographs is normal for the full day?

queen-bee-333, 19 July, 2015 at 18:51 Posted on Planning 0 22

Hi I have found a photographer I love but I'm not sure that I'm getting enough photos for the full day

the company is a couple who photograph weddings together. It is a digital only package of 100 photos for a little under £2.5k, there is an option for additional photos for £10 each.

We really wanted 2 photographers as we do want lots of photos at different parts of the day. here is what we're looking for....

bridal preparations including photos of the dress, bouquet and shoes.

the other photographer to be with the groom and groomsmen getting ready.

me arriving at the church.

the groom arriving at church plus some of him waiting at the altar

The ceremony and signing of documents

throwing of confetti and shots of all the guests together

the church is in a very scenic park and we wanted all of our formal family shots taken here.we also want a couple of us on our own in the park

we then want to go to another park about a 5 minute drive away and get all of the just me and him photos taken

the other photographer would go to the hotel with the guests and get informal ones of the cocktail hour

then we are back at the hotel and want a couple inside the hotel and the room with all the tables set

the receiving line

the speeches

the cutting of the cake

a few photos outside the hotel at sunset

then our first dance

as you's can see we do want a lot of stuff to be covered, how many photographs do you recommend? And do you think for 100 photographs that are digital only is a good amount for £2.5k? I understand photography is an art and prices vary but I thought I would get at least double that for the money. I've worked out that including thier dinner and breaks there will be around 6 hours of photograph time, which works out at approx 8.3 photos per hour for each of them.

They are also local so there is no travel costs etc.

Sorry for rambling on I just want to get a good idea of what other people are getting ?

TIA

I don't know loads about it but I wouldn't be happy paying that amount of money for that many photos without an album. Just something to compare to, our package is £1,300 and includes 500+ photos with the following (2 photographers too):

    Three or more Locations
    Pre Ceremony Photos
    Ceremony Photos
    Group Photos
    Candid Photos
    Bride & Groom Photos
    Speeches
    Cutting the Cake
    First few Dances
    DVD (3 copies)
    Online Portfolio
    Printable Images with Joint Copyright
    Photo Album (25cm x 25cm, 30 pages)

Everyone has a different business model and it's not my place to criticise anyone without knowing all the details, but 100 photos for £2.5k is unusual. If those photos were delivered in a form of a high quality album, then it would be less surprising.

That being said, photographers deliver anything from 100 to over 1000 photos and prices vary even more, so there's no clear right or wrong answer. At this price though I would expect them to be absolutely spectacular.

    Hope this helps Smiley smile

Pretty much what Anna has said. Although I would question just how much storytelling there is with just 100 pictures.

No need to worry about how many photos they will take as im sure it will be anything between 500 and 1000 or more and then you will get to see them im sure, and then you will have the opportunity to buy all the extras you want at a bargain price of £10 each.

I've done a lot of research into wedding photographers and 100 photo doesn't seem a lot. I know it's quality over quantity but I think you would struggle to get all the pictures of the little details and all your formal shots of family with 100 photos.

I've had different photographers state we would get from 300 - over 1000. Our photographer states we should get about 500 for £1500 (we're getting over 9 hours of coverage). Just so you can get an idea, and ours is digital only too!

That's a fantastic price for all of that! This company is offering 30 digital prints for that price! Where are you getting married?

From a whole day coverage by two photographers, I would personally expect no less than 250-300 photos, unless it's a very small, low key event. In general 300-700 range seems to be the most common.

Your photographer probably has a very good reason for such pricing, but it certainly is not very usual.

Is this photographer a traditional stylized photographer? one that does lots of setups with different lighting, only it sounds like it but 100 photos for that price is very unusual.

100 really doesn't seem like much. We had a pre wedding shoot with our togs and got 60 photos out of it (loads more were taken) and that was only 40 minutes to an hour with 2 photographers. There really aren't any we would be happy to loose either. If I was only getting 100 from a whole day I would definitely miss out on some shots I would really like.

We are paying just under 2k. That's for 9 hours photography with 2 togs, we will get about 900 edited photos on disk in high resolution and low resolution (for Facebook etc) and we get an album. Our photographers are amazing and everyone commented on how amazing our pre wedding shoot was.

It's the most important day of your life, I would try and get as many photos as you can (quality obviously taken into account). This tog you are thinking of seems extremely expensive, it would definitely be a no from me xx

Thats the point here. Far more than 100 will be taken and you will get to see the other 500+ I am sure of it. At which point after seeing them you will almost defiantly want more of them and will then have to pay an extra £10 each.

I dont quite see how it works, do they show you 700 and you have to pick 100 from those, or do they choose the 100 and then you get the option to buy extras.

Are they showing un edited ones and then you pick and then they edit those, or do they first fully edit in the knowledge that you will want them once you see them.

I honestly don't know how it all works,if they pick the 100 or I do. They don't say anything about having any fancy lighting with them, but they do say that they do a lot of editing to each photo. I have had a read about them online and I can see that they have won quite a few awards in the last couple of years. I've came to the conclusion that they are just charging more for the same thing other photographers do. Each to thier own but I'll need to go with a photographer that will include more photos for that price.

I just think without knowing who they are its hard to comment (please don't post the name on here?) but 100 images for that price I would expect them to be like no other photographers work.

That's what I was suspecting - the editing bit. If they spent a lot of time on each photo, this then explains high price per photo. As great as the photos may be, 100 from the whole day is unlikely to be enough, so you would end up culling a lot of photos you really want.

As a comparison for a whole day coverage we charge from £1100 for a digital package and from £1600 with an album. and we deliver 400+ photos.

So do we - in Lightroom and then again in Photoshop, but I was thinking that maybe they do some really heavy post processing - removing every single distracting detail, airbrushing skin of every person in every shot, compositing etc. Just a guess... Smiley smile

That's what I call editing and is normal everyday stuff (for me)

The problem is that the term "Editing" can have a massively wide latitude when photographers say all images are "edited" -- could be anything from just deleting Mr blinky to adding blue sky when it was raining

I thought everyone did this ^^^^^, by editing they might mean taking out exit signs etc like I do, I spend far to much time on the editing ?

Ah ok, fair play Smiley smile We airbrush skin on portraits and close ups, but not on every shot. You're absolutely right - editing covers so many different things, so everyone can interpret it differently.

I would have thought that at just £10 for additional images, that doesn't equate to a lot of editing time. I have seen figures on this forum where couples have been charged £25 an image.

Lots of different answers there but for me, it seems quite expensive. It all depends on what you think is good value for what you want. We typically present anything from 500 - 800 photos from a full day but there is no number set in stone.

Hmm that seems rather pricey to me, especially for only 100 images. I cannot imagine that being enough for a whole day. Our photographer has said we would get 200+ images from a half day (depending on how many details there are etc. that she can take photographs of), I believe for a whole day it is 400+ and she charges about £1500 (I believe that is digital only as well), she also has packages that include albums and I believe a second photographer was an extra £200 or so.

I do know a few photographer who will present no more than a few hundred for a full day.
The real point is to be sure that the number of images you will receive will cover your entire day and capture the important moments and people.

100 Photos will probably be 100 carefully edited photos of the highlight moments and will probably exclude any photos of the Bride making small talk with dad before going down the aisle or Aunt Betsy and Uncle Bob sharing a little joke.

It really depends how important some of the smaller moments are to you. You definitely do not need a barrage of photos, however if you would like the photos of friends and family on the day there is an excellent chance the 100 photos will miss the smaller moments.

If in doubt make sure to get the photographer to show you one or two previous weddings final set of images and take it from there.
