How many veg?

Lillythepink, 17 December, 2008 at 10:34 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 26

Christmas lunch:

Boiled potatoes

Roast potatoes

sprouts

carrots

parsnips

red cabbage.

Enough, surely? Do I need broccoli too - the girls only eat potatoes & carrots out of that lot?

I would lose the boiled spuds and add some leeks. Otherwise it sounds lovely.

More than enough. Why people do two kinds of potatoes I will never know ?

I suppose you could dispense with the parsnips if you want broccoli?

You can't ditch the parsnips !

Looks plenty to me, another one who doesn't understand the 2 potatoes thing but then we have Yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes so I guess that's similar.

I'd ditch the boiled potatoes and have just roasts and parsnips. I'd also include leeks as an extra veg.

Nooooooooo you cant lose the parsnips.... they are the best. Lose the boiled potatoes if anything (although if the girls will be eating them I suspect you will want to keep as is).

Sounds good to me. I LOVE it when people do two kinds of potatoes, its not something we have ever done but I love spuds so am always happy.

Are you doing all the trimings too on top of that? If so, my word, dont worry about brocolli.

Nooooooooooooooooo. My mother only eats potatoes, parsnips and carrots, so I can't ditch the parsnips. Also, the kids only eat boiled potatoes, and WTP wants roasties. So I have to do both.

    Cheers m'dears ?

I love two types of potato. I'd have more if I could, it's mash and roast in our house on a usual roast dinner but think we'll be ditching it this year for Christmas.

We'll be having yorkshire puddings to. They go with every roast dinner.

I think we'll be having carrot & swede mash, cabbage, brussels, and was going to do cauli cheese but I'm liking the sound of leeks. ?

I always slice the leeks length ways then cut into 2" chunks. Zap in the microwave for a few mins until cooked. Bit of black pepper and then stir in a generous glug of cream. Mmmmm.

Blimey! How do you fit everything on the plate?

    We'll be having:

    roast spuds

    roast parsnips

    carrots

    peas

    broccoli

    turkey

    bread sauce

    2 x stuffings

    chipolatas

    cranberry sauce

and we struggle to fit it all on the plate.

I thought pigs in blankets and devils on horseback were two different things, don't devils on horseback have something to do with prunes? <shudder>

Devils on horsebacks are prune in bacon, surprisingly lovely.

Well all you potato lovers can come round ours as we have 3 types. Roast, mash and croquettes. I am totally mystified by the need for more than roasters. Totally. But captain christmas and his parents are scots/irish and have some in built need for much much potato action.

    We're having:

Mixed roast veg (parsnip, carrot, turnip, garlic and red onion)

    Peas

    Leeks in cheese sauce

Brussel sprouts with pancetta and chesnuts

    Roast potatoes

    Boiled new potatoes

(We'll also be having turkey, chipolatas, bacon, skirlie (oatmeal stuffing), sausage stuffing, cranberry sauce and gravy.)

We will only be having a little of each veg and although I only ever eat roast potatoes, the others like two so we'll have two! If you can't have two potatoes on Christmas Day, when can you? ?

...and I thought that prunes wrapped in bacon were as bad as it got, how wrong I was!
