How much??!! Anyone else feeling cynical?

HappyGoldHair1147, 16 January, 2019 at 13:08 Posted on Planning 0 15

I started out our venue hunt feeling excited for a 2019 wedding, however now I'm just feeling cynical about the wedding industry wanting to rinse us for all our money!

Has anyone else become disenchanted with the venue hunt? Do all venues have arbitrary hire fees? Most we've been quoted start from £3000, which is the same for hiring a garden in front of a nice house (not allowed to go in the house so additional toilets needed) or a barn, or ceremony room in a hotel. Even a marquee on the grounds of somewhere seems insane. We've seen hundreds online and visited 5 in person.

Looking in Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire, Hampshire, Berkshire. Ideally an all in one place. 10K budget total for 50-70 people. It should be doable...right???

What month are you looking at? Our venue is in Somerset, and I know they have some deals on for leftover dates in June and August.

We are getting married at Gants Mill in Bruton. We're paying around £5600 for the venue, but this includes licensed gazebo for the ceremony, marquee including toilets and catering tent for the reception and a bridal suite for the wedding night.

Table, chairs and bar area are all provided, plus Greg who runs it acts as MC throughout your day. They don't charge corkage or commission, so you can get entirely your own people in for everything from catering to bands, which can help with saving money. Also, as everything is all in one place, you don't need to pay out for transport unless you want something!

Greg is so lovely and helpful, I would highly recommend. Some friends also got married there last year, and just had the best day!

    Hope this helps! X

It’s mega expensive. Our venue alone costs £7k (includes bridal suite, bridal prep room, the whole house and barns for 24hrs). this is in Hampshire. Apparently Hampshire and Surrey are the most expensive counties to marry in

Hey, I'm getting married in Wiltshire in 2019, so I feel your pain. I would recommend looking at village halls - there are some beautiful ones around, especially for your size (we struggled as were looking for room for ~100). The price (and to be fair, condition, decor etc) vary massively but we've found a beautiful hall for £1500 from Friday-Sunday. We see it as a bonus that we can bring in our own suppliers like caterers etc which again can help save you money, but I realise is more faff than some people want!

Good luck - don't be too cynical. And with hotels etc I would definitely try and haggle!

Yes!!! Totally blows my mind. I want our day to be special and nice, but I know we don’t have to spend spend spend to get that. Just got to do some work to work out how! Hope you find somewhere reasonable :-/

Yes!!!! My mind is blown with some of the prices we’ve been quoted. I know we can have an amazing day without spending a fortune. The best wedding I ever went to was £6k total. So I know it can be done. Just don’t quite know how yet... good luck!

I'm so glad I'm not alone!! Your choice of words seem perfect. I'm completely "disenchanted" about venue hunting now . I've not been looking at venues long (couple of weeks) but Southampton / Hampshire prices seem ridiculous!

We've got a really small guest list (40-ish) and I'm still blown away with how much we'll have to spend.

Thank you all for the great tips and moral support!! My best friend got married 4 years ago and her venue in Somerset has doubled their prices in that time, so I guess it's just market inflation, even if I don't agree with it! I will definitely persevere though, there has to be something! And yes, always worth a haggle.

    Good luck everyone!! ?️??

Have you thought about looking for somewhere like a vineyard? At the beginning of our hunt we were adamant we wanted to get married on a vineyard or have a tipi wedding and while our local vineyard(Essex) wasn't quite right for us due to a noise restriction and basement area for band, the quote they gave us was very reasonable. I think it was around 6k for 60 guests - canapes, wedding breakfast, wine with breakfast, reception drinks and the ceremony itself. You might find somewhere a little outside the box that is more budget friendly. The place we went with eventually cost us £5300 just for hire! It's insane and my OH did have a few meltdowns in the beginning but he accepted that for us to have what we want, will cost a little and now he's really looking forward to it. Good luck!

Getting married in Edinburgh and I found a hotel for our reception that is charging us £6000 for 75 adults but that includes everything from the drinks reception when our guests arrive, the wedding breakfast, a DJ for the evening and a piper if we want one. One place we looked at though said we could bring our own wine in and they would only charge us corkage of £15 per adult guest. We would still have needed to buy the wine on top of the excessive corkage charge.

While I can't generically speak for all wedding venues, the yearly cost maintaining the grounds, land taxes, insurances and mains supply on such big spaces will be excessive.

I was told by a former employee that Stanmer House in Sussex costs 50-60k a month to staff and maintain. And it's not even that big.

Factor in the costs to support the venue not just on your day but all the other days when nothing is going on and it adds up.

For the OP, for 10k, and if you want some change look into barn venues that are new to the scene and yet to be established. 12-14k with food for 80 is about the norm down here in Sussex so your budget isn't that unreasonable.

Otherwise consider hotels as they are usually cheaper because they're set up for these numbers on a daily basis.

Interesting.. I'm finding most barns to be more expensive than hotels.. esp if you need to get in the chairs / tables / full catering equipment, cutlery, licence etc. If they are more kitted out, then tend to be super cool and expensive.

I've also found barns to be the same sort of price as a wing of a hotel or entire manor house. I think because it's fashionable at the moment to have a pretty garden, relaxed, semi festival feel, so the more rustic venues are cashing in! And who can blame them? They've got bills to pay too. Whilst the barns and a marquee in the garden is really ideal, it's still not an ideal price though!

Currently pricing up a nice hotel near Bath, exclusive use, Vs the village hall near my father in law to be in Hampshire (with everything DIY). But even the village hall charges £1200, but is from a Friday to Sunday, so you can clean up after yourselves! Not sure I fancy that the day after my wedding! Throw in the cost of catering, staff etc..., the hotel menus are actually much cheaper at £89.00 a head (including all food and wine and canapes with reception). It would definitely be a bit cheaper but probably a couple of grand in difference, and when you're spending 10K, you may as well spend 12K and have a lovely bed and breakfast for you and your guests on your wedding night! Time to get an evening job too perhaps!!
