How much are you spending your wedding cake?

Vikster79, 23 September, 2010 at 16:07 Posted on Planning 0 55

We were going to get cupcakes from M&S and jazz them up a little, but i have been looking at the gorgeous chocolate wondernesses that you can buy and im considering blowing the budget to have what WE want instead of just trying to save money. Whats OTT do you think to pay? Just think i need reigning in a little ?

We payed £75 for a one tiered sponge cake that had congratulations and our names on it, then we had a small chocolate cake and cupcakes all from M&S, So glad we didn't spend a fortune on cake as most of it went in the bin!

Thats mine, 3 tier fruit cake with artificial roses and a bit of sparkle. the ribbon will be gold. That has cost us £40 but is from a lady who just does cakes for fun not profit so probably doesnt help but just thought i'd share anyway!

I am totally the opposite - I think that a cake is the centrepiece for the whole wedding reception, and as a result we are spending £450 on a 5 tier cake.

I think it's personal preference really - I want to cake cutting to be an important part of my day. Also anyone who knows me will be expecting a good choccy cake - I eat it 3 times a week! So it's a real personal refelection.

As a result we are having dessert served on arrival - choccy fudge cakes, eclairs, scones, pastires with Tea coffe etc an then the wedding cake served as dessert.

    ETA flash:

<< OH chose this for us - ours will have red rose decoration.

A family friend is making ours so it shouldn't be too expensive and my dad has said he will pay for it. So i have instead gone and blown some of my original cake money on a personalised cake topper. It will have our names and date of wedding and will be a keepsake. I personally don't understand spending hundreds of pounds on something that i don't think guests are particularly bothered about.

M&S cake for me all the way!! Already bought the cake topper and decs.

Cant justify spending over £250 in a bit of sponge or fruit. Much rather put the money to something else, like the bouncy castle!!! lol?

    Bargain lilsparkle!

We are currently waiting for a quote back from a lady that makes amazing cupcakes.. We ideally don't want to spend more thand £200 on 150 cupcakes plus a small cake for cutting. If it ends up too expensive, we'll be going down the M&S route, which will cost us £105 for the cupcakes.

I didn't want to pay a lot for ours. A local cake maker runs her own cupcake business from home and for 100 cupcakes decorated to our colour theme (purple & ivory) with a 7 tier stand is £175! I couldn't believe my luck Smiley smile

I think wedding cakes are hideously overpriced so I asked my mum if she would make ours as she is a brilliant cake-maker - luckily she said yes!

At most weddings I've been to, hardly anyone eats the cake; at my cousins' weddings my auntie has spent huge chunks of time running around tables going "have some cake, please have some cake!". This way I won't mind too much if no-one eats it as that means I get to eat the whole of my mum's delicious cake, which I wouldn't want to do with a shop-bought one!

    Hi everyone,

Our best mans wife will qualify in sugarcraft and cake things (cant remember the proper term) 6 months before our wedding and as their 'gift' to us she is going to be making our cake. She is amazing and has such patience and skills to make all the dainty things this is my cake inspiration and will be wedgwood blue and white Smiley smile xx

I do think they can be overpriced and just go with what your budget will allow and if you know someone who is talented and would make one for you go for it!

We're spending about £200 on our 'cake'. For that we get 11kg of cheese over 6 tiers!

Something a bit like this but with our fave cheeses. We're going to have a cheese and port course served later on in the evening.

The cake is not really important to us so we'll be going as cheap as possible! Im not sure we are even going to go for tiers. The wedding will be big (180+) so thinking of a BIG chocolate biscuit cake. Not iced or anything really but with big white chocolate hearts all over it! Still early in the planning stages though-and this plan may well change! But I def have other things Id rather spend money on!

I was shocked when I looked at wedding cakes - the type I like is about £350 or more. But my sister is great at cakes and has wanted to do wedding cakes for years, so I'm paying for her to do a proper sugarcraft course for wedding cakes and flowers. I'm paying £130 for the course and then cost price for the cake - bargain! And my sister gets a part time job that she can fit around her studying - everyone wins!

It is worth shopping around for cake,

most quotes we had came in at minimum of £300 so we were going to get an M and S / waitrose cake. Then we found out from a friend about a person just establising her bussiness the cakes came reccamended and her quote was fab we didn't want any fancy icing or sugarcraft so the cake ended up cheaper than the shop option. we are paying

    £130

for a round 3 tired cake bottom layer fruit, middle layer lemon sponge top layer coffee sponge we got to choose the flavours of cake we wanted and the price includes delivery and set up! and an added bonus is it sticks with our local suppliers aim.

so moral of story is its worth asking around.

A friend of a friend with a new business is making our cupcakes at a really good price of 100 for £50. My and MIL2B are making the cutting cake together, so it's just cost the price of the ingredients.

Just the cost of ingredients for me. I wil be making my own three tier very moist chocolate sponge cake, it will have a glaze finish and cigarellos around each tier. I also have some cala Lily and Scottish thistle made from suger paste as a wedding cake topper and for around the tiers.

It a very important part of the wedding for me. i always notice cakes as i love making them myself as a hobby. But i will never pay the silly prices expected for them. Its due to paying far too much on my daughters Christening cake 8 years ago that got me into doing it myself. It wasnt even a very good one imo...

I've found a lady in London who makes unusual looking cupcakes - we're paying £80 for 48. we were going to have a M&S cake but I love these too much! And it doesn't work out as much more

    I really love that!!

We are probably going to go down the M&S route (their cakes are delicious), but we currently have 2 offers from people we know to make the cake. Will have to see who works out cheapest!

In my experience, much of the cake is left uneaten at the end of the evening, so I can't justify spending huge amounts of money on it. Would rather spend that money elsewhere - like fabulous accessories!!! ?
