How much cake are you having?!

Alice_In_Wonderland, 19 December, 2012 at 12:29 Posted on Planning 0 11

Hiya Smiley smile

Starting to plan my wedding cake, and have realised that I have no idea how much cake I'm going to need!!! ?

We're having approx 50 people for the wedding breakfast, and inviting probably around another 40 or so people to the evening.
I'm not too bothered if the evening people get cake or not, as long as all the day people get a decent piece! (Although my cakes are legendary among our friends, and I know a number of evening people who will get VERY upset if there isn't enough for them too!!)

We are having a 3-course sit down meal, but expect to serve cake a bit later on when food has gone down a bit ?

In my head I was planning 2 tiers - a 21cm lemon sponge, and a smaller (18cm?) chocolate cake. But I've just seen a gorgeous 3-tier stand on line, and now I'm wondering if 2 tiers will be enough, or if 3 tiers will be too much?! Was thinking of maybe adding a 3rd plain Victoria sponge as a top layer?

How many tiers are you having/have you been advised, for how many guests??

Thanks!! Smiley smile

    Hi,

I would suggest a 3 tier cake measuring 10", 8", 6" (Keep the top part if it is still there for your anniversary) that size should be more than enough for about 60 people.

    Hope this helps

    Eil xx

We're having a little bit of cake overload... Mini cupcakes on the tables as favors, then we are cutting a two tier cake - keeping the top for us and cutting up the bottom which I believe is 10inches maybe (?) for the evening along with a selection of brownies, blondies and macaroons!

We're having 45 people for the day and about 30 more for the evening. We're having the full on, 3 tiers. We were told by the cake people that it'd probably be too much...she said to allow for a 'finger slice' per guest (approx 2cm x 5cm). I basically laughed in her face!

One of the tiers will be a fruit cake though, so if it looks like there might be some left over we can stash it for later.

We've got a meeting with them at the end of January to finalise the design and pick up some cupcakes for tasting so we can decide which flavours we want!

If you want massive cake, have massive cake! *massive cake face* ?

    Thanks ladies! Smiley winking

Won't be able to keep the top tier for our anniversary as it won't be a fruit cake. Could imagine a sponge cake after a year... ? lol!!

Skeptical - Lovin the cake face!! Smiley winking hehehe!!

3 tiers it is then! That means I get to buy the pretty cake stand! ? not that I'm obsessed with cake stands or anything.... ?

Well this may go against the grain, and perhaps it is just that my family LOVE cake, but we ran out by about half way through the evening and one guest did comment that they hadn't tried any yet Smiley sad

We had 56 day guests, then an extra 30-40 in the evening. Our cake was a 3 tier sponge (so all cut up, none saved for babies etc) and the sizes were in inches, 12, 10, 8.

As a say, that ran out and your numbers seem similar to ours, so perhaps be on the generous side rather than stingey when planning.

Have 3 tiers if that's what you really want hun!

I'm having 4 because I've got around 200 guests in total to cater for!

My FIL bought our cake as a suprise so I had no idea what we were having til the day... he got a 3 tier cake AND a cutting cake as he worried about us running out... we only cut the cutting cake on the day and there was loads of that left over, and the three tiers remained untouched!

We've saved the top tier, I had the bottom tier and about a quarter of it has had to be thrown away as it's gone bad before we could eat it (and it was fruit cake!) and my in laws took the middle tier.

Basically, we had way too much cake! We had 78 day guests and about 35 extra evening guests.

We had 60 guests all up for day & evening. (Got married in Sydney where you dont have seperate day + evening guests).

I wanted a 3 tier but would have been far too much cake, so had the bottom tier real & the top 2 polystyrene. I had fruit cake which was served as dessert, but we still had some left over. I suspect was cakes were really large though!

The false cakes didnt look any different to the bottom tier at all, & none of the guests knew.

I think saying that you're not bothered if the evening people get cake is a bit mean. If you can't be bothered to give them a slice of cake then maybe you shouldn't bother inviting them!

We got our cakes from M&S and they told us how many people each one served, fruit served more as it's richer. We had around 130 people in total by the evening so we had three tiers and also a cutting bar and that was plenty.

I used a calculator like this to work it out. It gives you appropriate options for different numbers:

    http://www.in2cake.co.uk/productinfo.php?product=293

Although I did end up getting a much bigger one that it says, it's a good guide for minimum numbers. I'm having a standard 3 tier for 50ish day and 20-30 evening guests.

Ooh, thanks Ellebob that's really useful! Smiley smile
They reckon a 12" cake for 50 people, and the stand I've seen holds a 10, 8, & 6 inch cake. So I think that should be perfect!

And I've just seen the price of the cakes on that website - £120 for a fruit cake?!?!?! ?
Glad I'm doing my own!! ?

Really?! Your family must LOVE cake!

We had 75 day guests and about 20 extra in the evening. We had 12, 10 and 8 inch tiers, saved the top tier and I don't think we even got through half of the other two tiers! It was fruit cake, so probably smaller slices, but even so I'm suprised there was such a difference!
