How much contact with your florist?

gee_gee, 27 August, 2012 at 15:37 Posted on Planning 0 4

I met with a florist for an initial chat about 3 weeks ago, mainly to get some ideas for the wedding flowers and to gauge costs. I loved the florist - her ideas from my vague descriptions were great and quite reasonably priced. I've emailed her today to say that we'd like to book her. It's a year until our wedding so I'm not expecting to iron out details now, but how long before your weddings did you really start liaising with the florist in terms of specifics, and how much dialogue have you had with them?

It's worth pointing out here that it'll only be the bouquets, buttonholes and church flowers she'll be providing as our table centres are being provided by another florist as part of the venue package.

Thanks

Like you we booked ours a year in advance last september, with general flower ideas, what we wanted and price budget. We (read i) didnt started finalising things until May this year.

But I didnt stop changing my mind and making a final decision until the beginning of August!

We secured our florist 6 months before our wedding. I met them at a wedding fair and I put down a deposit of £30 (I think) to secure our date. Then a couple of months after, we met up with them to run through ideas and get a rough estimate. Then 4-6 weeks before the wedding, we finalised everything via email and paid the rest in full via BACs.

I usually finalise everything around 3 months prior to delivery but I work two months ahead as I only do artificial now. It's not a good idea to finalise things too soon as quite often things do change such as colour schemes, bridesmaids dropping out, unable to obtain the dresses originally ordered, or even postponement to a later date due to job loss, family issues etc. With fresh flowers, they are normally ordered around 2 weeks prior to the wedding day so no real rush to sort out the finer details until much nearer the time. With artificial, my customers are delivered 3 weeks prior to the wedding.

No harm in sending photos through to your florist and giving them a rough idea of what you like etc so they can get a general jist of your order beforehand.

We get married 30th March next year, we're going back to see the florist in about November time and then will speak to her again January/February. I went to school with her so I do know her but I don't think that particularly changes timescales.
