How much do you know about your OH's job?

policefox lyn, 9 July, 2009 at 15:39 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 66

I notice on here quite a bit how someone mentions that their OH does some sort of job relevant to the topic and then gives an opinion/recounts a story based on their OH's job.

Now my OH has a very specialised and quite secret job so it's not something that I can spout about on here but I often feel woefully poorly informed as to what he actually does. Some of you seem to be very clued up on a job quite diverse from your own.

So, do you know as much about it as would seem from comments on here, Or is it a case of you knowing a few facts/stories which you then use in a relevant topic?

(I do appreciate that we have conversations with our partners but I find that OH and I speak about the people we work with/one off stories rather than going into the minutiae of procedures which it does seem that some hitchers do)

H and I both work in IT sales but with different technologies, I understand quite a bit about the products and solutions he sells but I think he knows much less about what I sell.

We both understand what the other one does though, depsite not understanding the specific products IYSWIM.

Neither of our jobs is complex or top secret though, in fact they are quite dull!

Yes. Seriously. She won't shut up about the bl00dy thing.

    [only kidding sweetie ?

I'm not saying I could use all the software, but operationally I'm pretty clued up.

Presently, I know very little as he is a medical student. And given that he's at the start of his degree, I think he knows very little too! In his former role as a civil servant I knew quite a lot about what he did in a broad, structural sense. I found the day-to-day minutae of what he did too tedious for words, apart from the office gossip!

He knows a fair bit about what I do, as met at uni, when studying for our first degrees, the subject area of which I now lecture in. I also drone on about work a helluva lot. Which is quite unfair as the glazed-over look used to come fairly quickly to me when he talked about his former job.

Mr FtG is a code monkey. I know bits and pieces about what he does, the projects he works on, etc, but not in any great detail, and know nothing about the languages he codes in. When he talks about work I do tend to zone out a bit ?

He knows lots about what I do because I whinge at him about it. ? (unless he zones out too, which he may well do!)

More than I need to. It's all film, film, film round here, and a hell of a lot of schminky-pinky foreigness. I wouldn't presume to tell anyone else what to do based on that though. "Hmm, I'm sure I heard that somewhere" is more like it.

I tell him little about my job really (so blinking dull, he only gets told when it's grimmity grim), but man does he know about the inner workings of the light organ of a squid ?

My husband is a mechanic and welder by trade. I've picked up the basics through watching him at work and having a genuine interest in what he does. Not to mention the time I threw away a very important part he needed for an engine change - oops! - I soon learnt how a simple bolt is very important ? But generally I wouldn't say I know anything about fixing cars and if I ever offer comment here it's because I've asked him first.

A lot. We're both lawyers, both started at the same firm at the same time (he's still there, I'm currently a SAHM). I'm a postgrad student of the area of law he specialises in and we spend quite a lot of time discussing both the specifics of his job and the law generally. If I were ever called on to discuss the subject on here, I would probably mention his (very significant) expertise as well as my own (lesser) expertise, just in case I needed to run something past him to be sure of all the details.

H is in law and although I try my hardest to ask him about his work, I'm afraid I get very lost along the way in his answers. I can't ever imagine being able to do such a precise and policy based job, I just don't have the patience.

I have no idea! My H is an engineer...the only thing I know is that things break down and it his responsiblity to ensure that they get fixed in a timely fashion. Oh and that he works shifts....?

He said something about stock rotation last week and I actually got excited because it was something that I finally understood......!!

Lots. He colours in, a 3-yr old could know a lot about his job (and ours does!)

Seriously, we are business partners, so I know a fair bit about what he does. I couldn't tell you how he does it - picking pantone shades and such like, he's got an eye for it and I don't, neither do I understand the technical requirements/skills of how to draw like he does. I have a basic understanding of how the industry works, what the expect from contracts, production, pre-production, agents, editors and so forth, because I can be bothered reading the contracts and he can't ?

Absolutely nothing. I know where he works, and I know about all the people he works with, but I have no idea what his actual job is other than it is something to do with banking. I don't actually want to know as it sounds very boring when he explains it to me.

He, on the other hand could probably do my job for me!

Bits. I've watched him do his job when he's been building stuff at home or at his parents' house. I wouldn't ever post anything on here about it that I hadn't got from him directly.

Quite a lot about some bits; nothing about others. He's got quite a weird and random job though.

He could probably do my job better than I do ?

I know bits and I can spout a little about certain things he does (he is in IT) but that is the more general stuff, like what laptop to buy rather than the specifics. I actually can't tell you what his job title is though and yesterday I had to ask him what he actually does with his time as I was looking for jobs for him.

Tbh though we have never really discussed the specifics of our jobs with each other. When we talk about work it is more likely to be about the people we work with etc than the specifics of the role, day to day issues, particularly because I have always been bound by confidentiality (as an accountant) and partly because accountancy and IT aren't that interesting?

I know a lot about his job - he's a rowing coach and we met when we were both rowing at the same club. I have done a bit of coaching / analysis of crews with him in the past, I go to regattas / training as support sometimes and he will often talk through issues he's having with me because (according to him) I have a good eye for what's not working in a crew. I couldn't do his job in a million years though.

I don't anyone's ever asked for rowing advice on here though ?

I know bits from what he's mentioned, but if I recount what he does I invariably say something incorrect. So all I'll say is, he works as Insurance Manager for a Wind Farm Company, so he does know some very geeky stuff about wind turbines and does dazle me with some very technical info.

I'm not working at the moment, but based on the types of jobs that H has shown me that in his mind I could potentially apply for, I think he doesn't have a scooby what the heck I did prior to moving to Denmark. As long as it's got marketing in the job somewhere, he thinks I'll be suitable, even if it's completely out of my league. Marketing Director needed??....yeah, sure, she can do that!! ? I know they say to aim hire, but that's pushing it a little. ?

Random bits and pieces: hes an electrical engineer and he does a lot for one particular client, so I suppose I know more than I would were he managing a lot of different clients. Also try and jump on board if ever he is going elsewhere with work.

Until the end of last year, my husband was a nuclear weapons engineer, working on the UK Trident submarines. I knew the basics of what he did, but not in-depth knowledge. There were many things he wasn't able to tell me either.

Now he works at Heathrow airport and has a pretty boring job - I know again the basics of what he does day-to-day but the technicalities go over my head a little.

TBH my H doesn't really know much about what I do - I'm a nurse in a children's hospice. He knows we care for children with life-limiting conditions, both respite and end of life, but as for details, we don't really talk about them.

Erm, quite a bit. he's a french teacher, and i speak french, so often point out where he has forgotten to mark mistakes (he doesn't like that for some reason.....) but i couldn't tell you what's in his curriculum. trouble is, i don't think he gets much of a chance to teach it, given the 'challenging' nature of many of his pupils....

he knows i work in the nhs. that is about all he could tell you ?

I know quite a lot about H's job (largely web design), but not through choice, bless him ?. I glaze over when he goes into technical detail, but I do follow most of it in theory as I also work in IT, although a very different area.

I don't know how much he knows about my job - other than that it's something to do with software for the financial services industry and I largely split my time between barking at programmers and trying to manage some fairly challenging personalities on my team... It also involves a lot of green-screen technology, which is far to old hat for him.

I know a reasonable amount about my husband's job - I work for the company he part owns. The bits I don't know are the ins and outs of the electronics and programming that constitutes the majority of his work. Electronics to me is a bit of a dark art, even when explained to me in terms of things I understand (chemical engineering). His explanations come in handy if I need help getting to sleep ?.

It's possible we may take over half of the company and run it separately so very soon I could know much more about it than I ever wanted to ?.

I know everything about my husband's job- he is a self-employed haulage contractor and, up until August 2008, I worked for him.

He thinks I cook a bit (am a chef)- ah, if only t'were that simple ?

At the moment, everything there is to know as he is unemployed! ? Not through choice though!

I think he gets the basics of what I do, he would describe it as pushing bits of paper around and answering the phone, but he'd be surprised if he actually saw/knew what was involved, especially the travelling and how tiring it can be.

I know that he's a service receptionist working for a body repair garage. From what I can gather this means he books people's cars in for repair, hands over loan cars to them (and deals with the various fall out from the loan cars), raises a job card and hands over to the guys in the workshop. Then when the car's done he checks that it's been properly repaired and cleaned, phones the customer and gets the loan car back before handing their car over to them. Then passes the worksheet along to the boss to be invoiced. Oh and also if the car has come from a dealership he has to return the car to them.

It seems to involve quite a lot of dealing with stoppy customers, chasing insurers up, chasing the boys in the workshop up and driving flash cars around the place.

Generally speaking he seems to be quite happy there.

Loads.......we do exactly the same job! We're both personal injury lawyers (no prizes for guessing where met) and although we work at different firms now our jobs are pretty much identical. I quite like the fact that if I've got a tricky case on we can have a chat about it etc.

We have a rule though, shop talk is confined to the car journey home and from then on is banned!

I know quite a lot as I've worked for him and have had to go to clients meetings etc. I'm actually always amazed at how much I have picked up. We talk about work a lot and I retain information so I am shocked when it comes out of my mouth when people ask something. I am interested in his job though so that helps.

I am in nowhere near the same league though, I'm about 1% of his knowledge. I could quite happily hold a conversation with people though and offer snippets of advice.

I know a fair bit about what Mr E does. He is a food and beverage manager in a 5* hotel and this is the first hotel he's worked in since we've know each other that I've not worked in too or helped out in.

There are lots of things I don't know about his job, I don't have his specialist wine knowledge for example, but there are lots of things I know from my experience in hotels as well as the things he's told me. He also tends to come home and describe every service in detail which is nice.? I also probably know more about some foods (such as cheese) than he does as a result of part time jobs I had at uni so he does ask my advice occasionally.

I knew basically what ex mr Dief did (basically a software engineer/programmer) and as my own job became more IT related I understood more.

I know exactly what the guy I'm seeing now does as we do exactly the same job (albeit different employers). We have to stop ourselves talking about work quite often...

    A fair bit I think.

I know what projects he's currently working on and that he has a few very biggies in the pipeline.

I know what the working titles are (he makes computer games for all platforms) and I know which apps he's working on for the i-phone.

How he does it I haven't a blind clue ?

H is an engineer and to be honest what he actually does goes over my head to say the least, we talk in vague terms about transformers (not the robots in disguise type) and windfarms etc as he designs the bits inside that make them work and the other stuff he does is secret (not that I'd understand anyway). We rarely talk about actual work, more about colleagues and the office, I used to work in a confidential environment so we couldn't do specifics anyway.

OH works in Logistics, I used to work for the same company so have a rough idea of what he does, however a new system has just come in that I know nothing about. I do ask him about work, but I do get a little lost along the way.
