How much for a custom-made dress?

TwoDucks, 12 April, 2014 at 13:51 Posted on Planning 0 8

Hi Ladies,

I couldn't find a dress that I liked despite visiting multiple shops so have decided to have my dress made. I knew exactly what I wanted and the shops just didn't seem to have it; long sleeved lace, v-neck bodice with buttons all down the back and then longer tea length full tulle skirt. It will have a fully fitted boned bodice under the lace top and a full net underskirt under the tulle.

Ive been to see a dress maker who was recommended to me and she originally quoted £2500 but I got her down to £2000 but now I'm not sure if this is really expensive compared to some of the other prices I've seen on here? I love her work so I'm not saying I don't think its worth it, just worried its overpriced!

What do you all think? Is this really expensive?

Help!

I havent had any official quotes, but on custom dress websites, the most frequent price range i have seen is from £800 - £2000+ depending on the design.

I am having my dress custom made, based loosely on this dress...

It will be made out of dupion silk and lace and will be boned; including the pettticoat my dressmaker has quoted me £750-£800 if that helps you?

    Thanks Ladies.

Miss Pickle whereabouts are you based?

Im in Surrey so went with her as she's local, now I'm wondering if I should've looked around a little more?

I'm in the North East and my dress maker is based in Darlington, so probably a bit far for you!

Maybe a tad! I think I will ask for a few more quotes, just been doing so well with negotiating and staying within budget, I'd hate to get totally OTT with the dress!

Your design looks lovely by the way, very similar to what I'm looking for!

Hi, mine is a custom made satin and lace a line dress with train and boned bodice and will cost just over £1000. Unfortunately I'm in derbyshire which is a little far for you too but I thought I'd reply to give you an idea of costs. I think yours is a little expensive for what it is but it might just be down to the area you live in? Good luck x

Thanks Bells, I've asked for a few more quotes from dressmakers locally so will see what they say! It's difficult to know what to class as overpriced as each of them will have different opinions on how much they charge for their time, but I guess if I can find one cheaper who I'm still confident in the quality then I'd be happy!
