How much sleep do you need?

Chicken, 6 November, 2008 at 16:29 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 42

I though you needed less as you got older but I'm constantly shattered. I went to bed at midnight last night and woke up at 6.45 - I look rough as and can barely keep my eyes open.

I remember staying out until 4ish and getting up at 7am for work 6 nights a week.

Firstly, I find I'm always shattered at this time of year, just after the clocks change.

Also, I think the 'you need less sleep as you get older' thing only kicks on once you have a more sedentary lifestyle. neither you nor I have one of those, damn it, so until we do, we 're going to be tired. Having said that, I can survive on very little sleep for a long time, but it always pays me back down the line in the form of a migraine, a huge spot, or a touch of tonsillitis.

I've completely lost touch with how much sleep I need. I find that I either lose sleep getting up to look after the baby or else I wake up at 4am and worry about things for a couple of hours. It's horrible. I don't think I've had more than 5 hours sleep a night in the last three years, and I always used to be a 7 hour girl ?

I thought the same but like you am v.tired and seem to need more sleep now than I used too. I used to go out clubbing and drinking each night to then get up in the morning for uni no prob. Now by 10pm I wana go to sleep and can't get up in the morning for work.

I normally get 8 hours a night but would prefer about 10 hours a night. (maybe I'm just lazy) ?

I need loads, always have done. Ideally 8 hours on a school night but usually get around 6.5-7. And if I'm going out on a Saturday night then I have to have a nap of at least an hour in the afternoon otherwise I can't stay the pace.

I've been needing a lot more sleep in the last few years than I ever did before.

In my early 20s I used to hold down a full-time job, 2 part-time pub positions and would still manage to go clubbing Fri, Sat and occasionally Sundays.

Now, i'm in bed by midnight at the latest up at 7am and feel constantly shattered. I need to give in at times and head off to my bed at 8pm. I could easily sleep until midday at the weekends.

    Anyone seen my mojo?

LouM I agree with you about the clock going back and I am finding the case at the moment. I need about 7 hours a night unlike when I was younger when I could party untili the small hours.

I'm always tired this time of year although I am quite a lazy mare! I do need at LEAST 7 hours during the week!

I need all of it ?.

Ideally I'd go to bed at around ten and wake up at eight, but most annoyingly works appears to get in the way. I'm ok during the week on around seven / seven and a half hours, but it's not ideal.

7-8 hours, but I regularly get 6 or less. I am a "nocturnal awakener" I think they call it! I have no problem dropping off, but often wake in the middle of the night/ v early morning.

I have a 4 hour commute on top of my working day, so sometimes I can flag. I try and catch up at weekends though.

During the week I can just about cope on 6 or 7 hours, but I neeeeed to have a lie in at the weekends and catch up.

If I don't get the weekend lie ins I really really suffer.

There was an interesting article about sleep in New Scientist a few weeks ago. Apparently people don't actually need as much sleep as we think we do. I'm not sure I agree ?

A lot more than I actually get..

Im surviving (barely) on about 5 hours sleep a night at the moment, no matter what time I go to bed I seem to wake up at around 4 - 5 in the morning and not get back to sleep (got into routine by landlady who stoopidly gets up around then to go to work - hence the move in 2 weeks)

Im like this even on days I dont have to get up like weekends so dont seem to manage to catch up at all and consquently by thursday / friday end up walking round like a zombie...

Ive been a bad sleeper for years but recently its got a lot worse..

to the extent that I have sleeping tablets prescribed by the doctor and also have been referred to a sleep clinic, am currently doing a 2 week sleep diary and its not pretty reading at the moment

You need 7-8 hours sleep aside from individual differences and substantial sleep debt.

Whilst adults need less sleep than teenages, older adults don't need less sleep than younger adults, but they do get less sleep because their sleep architecture changes, and they have less deep sleep.

I love to sleep, and need doesn't come into it for me, I'll take as much as I can. In fact, its my hobby. If i'm at a loose end I just get into bed with a book and drift off. Lovely.

I can function on very little- I could get through a day on none and have- but it would have to be made up pretty quickly, I guess I'm lucky that I've never been put in a position where there is no catch up time.

I never ever naturally wake up- at a decent hour anyway- without an alarm I won't be awake before 11. I usually get to sleep about 11pm. I suppose that indciates I want lots and lots!

    I need 8 hours, preferably 9.

I'm currently unable to sleep for more than 2 hours at a time due to extreme upduffedness and a knackered pelvis, and it's making me very grumpy indeed.

My optimum is about 11-13 hours in 24 hours. I'm at my best if I can sleep 10-11 hours 10/11pm-9am at night and 1-2 hours in the afternoon. Sadly, despite being doped up to the eyeballs, that doesn't happen all that often.

I like to have 8 hours a night and with a couple of those before midnight to feel rested but haven't been recently

I've been lucky enough to be able to manage to very little in the past as long as I can catch up (a week is about the longest I can go with only a couple of hours a night) but that's got a lot harder as I've got older - only plus part of having been used to that was that dealing with a young baby and sleep depreviation wasn't as hard as it could be (and generally I could nap during the day)

My biggest thing is that I really like an afternoon sleep which isnt' really compatible with working ...

I've turned into a 7-8 hour girl despite never needing previously. I've found this to my cost this weekend, it wasn't particulary drunken nor was I out to dawn but didn't have 'good' sleep for about 3 nights (due to new bloke coming to visit, not being used to having someone in my bed, being worried about snoring etc ? ). I have been feeling pretty pants since yesterday lunchtime and despite leaving work at 3 and going strait to bed, I am now back in bed with tonsils the size of golfballs [:'(]

I was going to post tonight for some tips from workaholics, as I am struggling. I'm really tired, but drive about 180 miles a day for work. This means leaving early and getting home late. How do people do it?? I have no life and I hate it.

Ideally, 8-9. i'm terrible with too little sleep. although i was suprised how well i coped when cub was born and we only had 90 min stretches of sleep for at least the first week. i guess you just deal with things when you have no other choice.

I used to think I needed 9 hours, but then I had a baby and it turns out I don't. ?

God I love my sleep though, how I miss being able to have an afternoon nap. ? Once I went to bed at 11pm (admittedly very drunk) and woke up at 6pm the following evening. ?

I usually go to bed around 11 but don't fall asleep until 12. Saying that, I usually get up around 9 but even then I'm tired. I guess it's because I'm doing so much - I go to the gym four times a week (during the day) plus walking the dog each day for an hour plus housework/shopping and I also workout at home every day too. I wonder if I'm doing too much because I am so tired.

Most weekends I'll grab an extra couple of hours in the afternoon (usually on one of the days not both).

This week wasn't helped by staying up until 4am to watch the US Election results coming in. This morning I had to stay in bed til 10!! Dreadful, dreadful behaviour! ?

? Wonderwoman! I can't face dragging my arse to the gym once I've got out of the car at 8 o'clock - I'm stiff as a board and knackered. How do you do it??

A lot more than I get - and that's only likely to get worse over the next few days/weeks and for the foreseeable future ?

About 7 - 8 hrs is ideal for me - I got 7 full hours uninterrupted sleep last night for the first time in months and I feel great today.

Do you mean that you do this in addition to your day's work (ie to get to work)? If so, could you take the train instead? Sounds exhausting.

If it's that you drive as part of your work, do you get to take plenty of breaks?

Yeah. It sounds ridiculous, doesn't it? I have an interview locally tomorrow and I am absolutely desperate to get the job.

I have 5st of kit to carry, so it's hard to get the train. I don't really get breaks as I'm a trainer. I've done this for 2 years and I'm losing the will to live now. I have finally admitted my job is hideous and I need to get the hell out of there ?

I think my husband and I would both get lots more sleep without the other one there. We both have a tendency to wake up at 4am worryinging about stupid things, which is nice in a way as we can keep each other company (although many hours pass with us both being silent, thinking the other one is asleep). But then I'll be drifting off again and he'll wake me up by trying to cuddle me, or (as happened this morning) we'll decide to give up on sleep at around 5am, I'll go and make tea, the come back and accidentally wake H, who had finally got to sleep. It's rubbish.
