Pompey, 18 September, 2012 at 09:36 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 20

All inclusive, 11days to Mexico next week and we would like to go to Xcaret and Shell Hut, perhaps Chichen Itza so were wondering how much we should take?

So many Hitchers going to Mexico soon, but none when I'm going to be there ☹️

We hope to do Xel Ha and maybe Coco Bongos in Playa Del Carmen (not Cancun!) Not going to bother with 'Chicken Pizza' Though!

We are planning on taking maybe £300 for a couple of trips, then I get paid when we are there, so perhaps some shopping with my debit card!

be careful with this and exchange rates, a girl who was holidaying at the same time got stung with this when paying for trips!! (and also let your bank know you're going to mexico or it might automatically decline the card)

We did Coco Bongo on our honeymoon and booked through the thomson reps, think it was around $100 each which included drinks and waiter service. When we got to the club realised tickets there were alot cheaper so might be worth asking around before booking.

Was a fab night though would def recommend!!

Can you look the trips up online and see how much they cost? I am sure we could have booked them in advance? If not i'd scour the trip advisor pages for a cost on them as our trips were obviously our biggest outlay.

Othewise i'd budget at least a couple of hundred pounds for each and at least £50 for the things you might want while there - photo's were our biggest outlay, when we swam with dolphins the photos alone were £125 (I think). We also had food/drinks whilst out.

In terms of cash though, we took £500 - we ended up spending 3x that I recon, but a big bulk was spent in the spa, on the one trip we did and on a photographer in the hotel so all but the dolphin trip were paid on our debit card (which gave us a better exchange rate coincidentally). We also probably spent a good few hundred tipping the staff/room attendant which was obviously cash but I think that depends on the resort, some resorts don't allow it full stop, other encourage it etc.

Thanks - I'll take note of this! Was planning to pay cash for the trips then any shop purchases on card, but I'll check exchange rates before doing so, cheers!

when we were there everything was priced up in US Dollars but we were advised ot take Pesos. Check the rates and how they are before you get your money, we thought dollars worked out more expensive when we were there!

H is saying to take dollar.

Been looking at Xel Ha online and it appears that paying with dollars work out cheaper. Hmm. More confused.

I still don't know which is best!

We took dollars only - everything in the hotel was priced up in dollars and IIRC anything we paid on card had to be paid in Peso - I found it all very confussing.

I'd see what the rates the hotel use to convert, as if trips are priced in $, they can apply their own rate to the peso-$ conversion if they wish which may make it either cheaper/more expensive depending and vice versa.

Also I'm sure I read that your departure tax has to be paid in cash. Either currency, although I'm not sure what the fees are at the moment.

We took £600 but ended up taking about £200 extra out. We swam with dolphins, Coco Bongos, the pirate ship night time cruise, Xel Ha, Isla mujeres and had 2 meals out plus tips and some shopping. The second time we went we took £500 and came back with £50 we did a few meals out, xcaret and a catamaran day trip plus tips and massages. Oh and the airport tax both times of course!

    ETA We took pesos.

When we went in May, everything was much cheaper in pesos than dollars.

We also saved 10% booking Xcaret online before we went, and I think Chichen Itza was cheaper too online, but either way, it saved the faff of sorting while there.

    Have an amazing time!

Hi , we went last year and didn't go on the trips organised by the hotel or tour operator. The standard price to get into all archaological sites is just 50 or so pesos which is a few quid . If you like exploring rather than being toured around in a coach, there are buses you flag down on the street and a bus/coach station to book trips further afield . We used the buses to get around, went into Tulum and booked the chichen Itza trip with a mexican tour operator which saved us around 50% but if we went again, we would not use a tour as you don't get enough time there-they want to stop off at shops/cafes etc and we ended up with only 20 minutes on our own to explore ☹️ The buses cost between £1-£5 travelling locally. We booked our own coach to go to Coba which we think cost between £7-£12-all we had to do was get a bus to Tulum, and the coach station was further up the main road. The prettiest ruins are at Tulum, you just pay on the door. We hardly spent any money as we were also all-inclusive,and we took pesos not dollars. Souvenirs were so cheap at Chichen Itza compared with in the resorts, some things were only £1 compared to 5-£10 in the resorts. Take sun cream with you unless you want to pay £20 a bottle-yes really! You will have a fantastic time,we absolutely loved it x If I went again, I would probably only take a couple of hundred with me. If you are going to go on the tours and mainly be in or around the main resorts, and do shopping, take £800 at least. Enjoy ! x
