How old is your christmas tree?

bobbly1, 6 December, 2008 at 05:18 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 21

I saw an article in the Sun today that shows a lady who has an artificial christmas tree that is 79 years old.

/news/

My sis has our parents artificial christmas tree that they bought when it was my first christmas - it is about 4 feet high and is 42 years old and still going strong! It still goes up every year (doesn't have the original decorations though!)

My Nanna has a gold nutmeg christmas decoration which is over 90 years old and goes on her tree every year.

My tree is new this year as our son is finally at a age where he wont try to pull it over so the 3 foot one has gone away and we have a lovely 6 foot one

    Aww how lovely!

We have an artificial one that is in it's second year this year. We did have a real one very year, but I ended up getting fed up of a. going to choose one, b. disposing of it, and c. ending up in casualty with after a branch poked in my eye whilst I was trying to water the damn thing, scratching my retina, and me being in absolute agony (worse than childbirth!) for 2 days!

My mum's old tree was 20+ years and was plastic.

She has a new one new, a good (and huge!) life-like fake, which she's had for 7 years and will come to us when we have a big enough house. We'll probably have it about 20 years in all too. I hate when people buy fakes and chuck them after a couple of years (ie my MiL!)

We put ours up last night, it's a real tree in a pot that we bought last year. I put it outside in January, thinking it would die off, like it's predecessors, and when it was still going strong in August I started to hope we could use it again. It just needed a couple of dead branches trimming off it.

Mmm, must remember to water it this morning.

We've had the one we've got for about 3 years I think, before that it was my parents and they had it for quite a while as well. It's looking a bit sorry for itself though so I think I'm going to get a container grown one for use in the lounge and then put the old one in the playroom (which hopefully will be finished next year!).

Slightly different - my aunty still put's the angel I made for her and my uncle at the top of her tree every year. I made it when I was six years old (26 years ago) out of cardboard and tin foil! ?

Our tree is 8 years old. It's 7ft high and holds hundreds of lights and baubles (pain in the bum actually!) My sister gave me a lovely little angel ornament with fluffy wings. It holds a little card which says on it "Chance made us sisters, hearts made us friends". I put this at the top of the tree each year ?

Mine is 7 years old. I bought it the year me and H had a flat just of our own and it still looks as good as the first year. I shelled out more money than I could really afford at the time, but I'm glad that I did.

My dad has some nursery rhyme lights that still go up every year, they belonged to his great auntie and are 55 years old (5 years older than my dad) - I think that's quite impressive for something electrical, especially seen as they still have the orginal bulbs too.

I forgot to mention our tree, we bought it last year and as we don't have much space, it's only 3ft tall. Hopefully, if we have kids, they will be able to have that as their tree to decorate as the wish, leaving our main tree (my mum's) as our more tasteful tree! If we don't have kids, well we'll just have to have two trees anyway!

We're going to add to our tree ornaments each year and will hopefully have a nice collection in the future, full of things that mean something. We've bought three (an old fashioned soilder with the sting pull legs, a wooden santa and a skier) from the garden centre this year as they weren't expensive but that we liked. Last year we bought a china snowflake in Bryant Park, NYC, which was our first good one and my lovely friend Monkey Fingers sent me a cookie baking tray ornament.

I also buy my mum and mil a christmas ornament for their trees every year.

Mrs Magic those ornaments are lovely! We do a similar thing, I always buy a bauble from every place we visit and have collected some lovely ones over the years.

I've just finished putting our tree up and have taken some photos to send to H, as he won't get to see the tree until he finally gets home from work on the 21st.

This one we got from Hawaii (it has a turtle on the inside):

I got this one on a trip to disney:

My mum got me this swarovski crystal one last year:

    And the final product!

Our tree is H's parents old one. Probably at least 15 years old.

We also have another, better one that my boss gave me, must be about 8 years old. But it's too full for our lounge, so we have it in PIL's basement until we get a bigger house.

My Mum has a hideous fibre-optic tree, can't remember when my family last had a real tree - doesn't work well with dog paws..?

Ours is only 3 or 4 years old but will probably be used for many years to come. Some of the decs I use are at least 20 years old.

Wuzzle, I have those disney ones from when we went to Florida. I also had a beautiful disney one but it got broken last year?

Our tree is 7 years old, it was half price in Matalan and has silver sparkly bits throughout, I love it but H doesn't and so I am giving it to the church after this year as their one is looking like it has had better days.

Oh I would be gutted if one of mine got broke, so I feel your pain. In fact it's the reason H refuses to help me put the tree up, he's afraid I'll divorce him if he breaks one ?

Yes it was even worse as I was still adjusting to being a mum so was tearful at the thought of there being mouldy bread in the breadbin, so you can imagine the state I was in..

The disney mouse ears ones are my favourite though...

Awww Peanut, just think when you can take your LO to disney and pick out some new ones ?. I am officially banned out of the disney christmas shop by H, I have 10 of the ornaments on my tree and he's said enough is enough. Personally I don't think you can have too many ornaments on a tree....
