how to feel ancient - in one easy step

flailing wildly, 27 November, 2008 at 21:15 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

I saw on facebook today that a bloke I went to school with has proudly announced, 'I am a granddad.'

All I can say is ?

Ok, he's an unusually young granddad at 36. But heck, now I feel like a dusty old biddy, and I don't even have children ?

I made the great mistake of offering to proofread a close friend's CV - whereupon I discovered she was born in 1981.

Just to put that in perspective, summer 1982 was when I successfully sneaked into my first 18-certificate film in the cinema. In fact, it was an X-certificate film, as the 18 certificate hadn't even been invented then.

But you're younger than me? I thought? And I was only 7 in 1982 ?

That's hugely flattering, and I do genuinely seem to look (JK: "and behave") much younger than I actually am, but I was in fact twice your age in 1982.

I feel old when I see people who are my age and younger having babies - let alone grandchildren! And I was born the year before your friend Mr JK ?

We were out in the pub when my H was talking to his best friend's son. J's dad died about 5 years ago. The barmaid asked J if H was his Dad. It is possible, that would have made my H 20 when he had him. I thought that this was hilarious until I realised that she might have thought I was his Mum! I'm younger than H.

But a girl at school had her son aged 15 so she could technically be a Gran now as he would be 21 too. I've only just started to think about having babies.

    When I get to 36 A will be 14 going on 15 which is scary enough ? I'm hoping that I won't be a grandma before I'm 40 though ?

    Well, I was 8 in 1981 ?

I feel old most of the time now, even though there's damn all chance of me being a grandma in my thirties - No1 son would have to notice some of the GURLS who go all red-faced and giggly around him first.

I went to a Uni open day a couple of weeks ago. The only other people my age there were the parents...

? In 1981 I was old enough to drink in a pub - legally - but had been doing so for years!

And now - when Camperbub starts school, I'll be nearly 50 - and will look like her gran/great gran..... ?

1981 i was 12 and had just started senior school.....

i have told number one child that i don't want her to reproduce til she is 30.... that would make me 53 which is ok to be a granny i reckon.....

i am however already a great aunt twice over ?

When i started uni last year more than one classmate said "my mum's your age". i was only 38. they did follow it up with "and she doesn't look as young as you" so i was at least partially consoled.
