How to go about finding a breeder of oriental cats.

Lumpy Golightly, 6 March, 2009 at 20:29 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

Mr G has agreed that I can, at some point in the not-too-distant, have an oriental shorthair cat. I want a red tabby. Anyone know of any breeders, or what sort of price I would expect to pay? I don't want to show or breed, I love the personalities of these cats and would just be keeping it as a pet.

Try petplan.co.uk , click the 'find a kitten' link, tap in the details of the breed you're interested in and hey presto a list of breeders, DOB, colours and price.

www.catchat.org might be quite a good place to start. Their website has lots of information on breeders, what they should be doing for the kittens and what you should look out for when visiting. Quite a number of breeders advertise on CatChat & their forums have some good advioce.

Thanks - there are a couple of little red boys available now, but I'm not even supposed to be looking yet?[broody]

Gives me an idea of cost too - less than I expected ?

Would you be interested in re homing one from a shelter? They get all sorts handed in, not just moggies.

My cat is a rehomed moggie but by his appearance, personality and vocal tendencies he definitely has a touch of the orient about him. He is a ginger tom too.

I rehomed him when he was weaned (I work at a vets and he was my 51st kitten, strict instructions by H that they don't stay permently), but he is now called Woody and is very much loved by his new family.

Both my cats and my dog are rescued, so yes, it's definitely something I'd consider. The last oriental I had was a rescue too, but they're fairly unusual and I've got my heart set on a red one. If the right cat came along I'd certainly not dismiss it.

They're gorgeous. I'm trying to persuade my H to let me have a pug but we already have a naughty kitty without adding to the chaos.

    How exciting!

I used www.kittenlist.co.uk to find my British Blues. Just checked for the breed your after and they have quite a few red ones but all over the country.

    Good luck.
