Seems like a few of us have started this/are old hands/are keen to try. Thought it would be good to share some tips.

What's changed our spending habits completely is as follows:

1 - dull but necessary - look at where you spend your money. Every single pound of it. If possible look at figures for all of 2011, month by month. Internet banking is helpful here. We noticed several things: a) we were wasting far too much across the year b) months with birthdays/events in were a lot more expensive c) we spent almost double in the second half of the month compared to the first half d) we ate too may takeaways.

2 - work out your fixed costs and what constitutes a necessary expense (ie for me the cost of the hairdresser is factored in, it might not be for someone else).

3 - only spend cash. I'm so grateful for the help some of the girls gave me in terms of this budgeting (hopefully they'll share some tips too) but it really makes you assess what you spend your money on. We've eaten better and reduced our waste all for a lot less money. I still get to be picky in terms of the things that matter to me (I only buy meat from the local organic butcher for example) but I make sure we don't waste food.

Anyone else?

I have a credit card where if I spend a certain amount each month I get £5 back. I make sure it's paid off by dd each month so no interest and I use the card for stuff like petrol that I would buy anyhow. I also get money if I pay a certain amount into my back account each month. The money doesn't have to stay in the account so when I get paid and get my reward, the money goes into our joint account and gets another award. H does the same so we get three rewards for two lots of wages.

We shop around for everything using the internet, particularly for larger items.

We check our utility bills and insurances every year to see if it can be renewed more cheeply. On this I always haggle too - I got £90 off my car insurance this year by telling the company I had found a cheeper deal and wanted to leave them.

I'm crafty so often make presents and can buy clothes in the sale at the wrong size which I can take in. I also adapt old clothes for example I may turn a pair of jeans that are worn on the hem into a denim skirt. I can also easily fix items that are damaged.

I buy in sales - christmas cards, clothes, etc. I use discount vouchers and we often eat out at places where we have a voucher - lots on the net if you google it. I save on loyalty cards too - like boots and tescos and these quickly add up. I usually use the saved 'money' to buy trreats or presents for people.

We have our food delivered and we save lots - I can check the price as I order and take advantage of bulk buying. We get huge bags of pasta, rice etc. We also buy on offer - so if cerial is on offer I'll buy 4 boxes, it all lasts for ages! I also batch cook and freeze. I make most meals from scratch including bread and cakes. We grow our own veg too which saves money and we eat a lot of veggi meals, so we don't spend a lot on meat. Food wise we spend approx £100 on food, (including basic toiletries and cleaning products) every fortnight. There are two of us and we take packed lunches to work.

Just go in from my shop and spent £63 not bad! I bought a joint to cook instead of sandwich meat and spent a lot of time scouring the reduced section for things I could freeze ? H isn't impressed that I bought tescos own head and shoulders though...
