How to store my dress

EThompson, 24 September, 2012 at 13:21 Posted on Planning 0 9

Hi, I bought my dress online and it is currently being altered. Once the alterations are done I will need ot keep the dress at home until the wedding in January. Does anyone have any tips as to how I should store it and how I should get any creases out of it on the day? I know most dresses are professionally steamed before collection. I won't have this available.

Thanks in advance x

I presume the shop/seller can't or won't keep it for you? Without being the voice of doom, you might need more alterations doing before January?

Just don't put it in the garden shed! If it's too long for your wardrobe, you might be best off banging a nail it high up so it doesn't crease. Can a family member keep it for you?

I do have family that could keep it for me, but it would need to be in it's bag as it is my Dad's house and I don't really want him to see it before the day. I might be able to buy a very big bag I guess.

The dressmaker won't keep it as she works out of her house so doesn;t have the space.

Can you steam it with an ordinary iron by holding it close to the fabric if needs be?

I have been advised by my bridal shop to store my dress in a cotton duvet cover! Just cut a small hole in the top and then put the hanger through that and do the buttons up at the bottom. This is a good way of protecting the dress but not letting it get too hot - because of the cotton it can "breathe" I think she said! Mine is just sitting on a double bed at the moment until I find a wardrobe to hang it in.

It might be worth contacting a bridal shop and asking them if they will steam the dress for you for the wedding? Even if you have to pay a small amount for it.

My mum and dad are storing mine for me. My dad has put a hook in the ceiling and hung it from there. It is in a bag so it doesn't get dusty and they keep the curtains shut so the sun isn't on it Smiley smile

The lady in my dress shop advised me to hang the dress up so that the front was off the floor and so the train was resting on the floor, apprently this was the best way to make sure that the dress doesn't get odd creases as it hangs.

Between buying my dress and my wedding day I hung it up at my parents house with a sheet over it for protection.

However, today I wrote this blog on how to protect and store your wedding dress after the big day.......it may come in handy!
