How / where do I find out if a small road/passage way/ drive is a private road or not?

sherry, 11 March, 2009 at 18:16 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

We've been to view a property today and love it, there is access to the property via a share drive (so it says on the details). It veers off the main road and is a thinner road/passage to 2 houses. The front of the house has a fence up at the moment, but if we took the fence down we could park a car there.

It use to belong to a company called Linkage and as such the property is empty so no one to ask about it.

I have thought about asking the neighbours but didn't want to impose myself.

It may not be a private road, in some respects I don't think it can be and if it is shared drive (only 2 houses can use it) it sounds like you can drive on it but the agent didnt know.

ANy ideas?

Thanks

it should be clear if you have searches done, but you don't want to go to that expense unless you are going to buy.

try a land registry search at www.landregisteronline.co.uk - about £5-6 for the title plan and register of title which should show any rights of access.

alternatively take a plan to the local council and ask highways dept.
