HRML - Do I need an air conditioner?

barongreenback, 29 June, 2009 at 19:07 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

Pros:

I will be cool

Cons:

Might only get a week's use every year

Noisy

Uses lots of electricity

£100 that could be better spent

Bulky

Would need to leave window open for the vent - bugs and noise

Hmmm.....still undecided.

7 years ago, I listed all those cons - but H weent and got one anyway.

It is an absolute godsend in this weather - a good night's sleep is worth more than the monetary cost.

ps. you get used to the noise very quickly, it actually sends me off to sleep quicker!

Don't want to mention the 'b' word over here but you'll definitely find another member of your family will appreciate it...

Go for it as long as you've got the storage

We bought ours last weekend and it is the best money we have ever spent! Worth every penny and the additional electricity to get a good nights sleep.

Mentioning the b word would mean it would be a selfless act and clearly it's not ?

Trust me when I say your days of being selfish are very very numbered, take the excuse.

ETA - The 'b' things like white noise, it produces sleep, sleep is worth any amount of money.

Nope, they are SO ungreen, they make a terrible noise and they give you bad skin. Open a window.

Personally i'd go for a decent sized tower fan instead, chances are the hot weather will be over pretty quickly and then you'll be looking for somewhere to store the air conditioner.

I have 2, so I'm definately in the 'yes' camp. I use mine quite a bit throughout the summer, especially the bedroom one. You do get used to the noise at night.

I've had one 7 years and the other 5 years. They were just over £100 each, which to me seems good value considering the time they've lasted.

People always spend out on heating, why not spend out on cooling as well. I know this is england and we don't get too much heat, but when we do it's pretty horrid, so why not make yourself more comfy.

I didn't find the electricity cost extreme and we do have ours on a lot. But I'm probably not the best judge as I am the sort of person that leaves my house lit up like a christmas tree by forgetting to turn the lights off!

Go for it, you know you want to. ?

WSS - have a glass of water by your bed, put on a thin sheet and have a damp towel to hand to put on your forehead if the heat gets too much you big wuss!

WTS, also they are ugly and bulky and you'd have to find somewhere to store it when not in use or it would annoy the hell out of you.

Our aircon at work is on the fritz atm and we have loads of portable units around the place. The difference they make, while better than nothing, is pretty negligible tbh.

More of what they said. ?

Summers are on average a degree or two hotter here than in the UK - we had a hot spell a couple of months ago where it hit 37+ during the day, and 20C ish at night. A fan, just a sheet in bed and a damp flannel as a last resort were fine. Keeping the sun off the windows was the most important thing I think.

    But then we don't have a 'b' ?

WSS - we've got a tower fan about 3.5 foot high, so high enough to blow over the bed, and there were only a couple of nights last year where that + damp cloths weren't enough, and MrSC really feels the heat. I think ours was the matter of about £25-£30 from B&Q. Aircon just not worth it in this country when you have a b on the way and need the money for teeny tiny clothes.

We bought one for when our baby was coming along as we thoughti t could heat the room before she went in it at nigth etc. In the end we didn't use it because of the baby. So, considering you have a baby you'll probbly not use it and would benefit from a fan instead. oh! and unfortunately I don't think the heat wave will last all summer??

Did any of that make sense?
