HRML - WWYD? (not very interesting, fridge freezer related)

Roobarb, 31 August, 2008 at 15:30 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

So our FF has broken down ? the thing the fridge engineer told me might fix it hasn't worked.

It's an integrated unit which was here when we moved in in March, I suspect it's only a couple of years old at most.

We don't really like it, it's too high up and the fridge and freezer don't hold all that much stuff.

Mr R just thinks we should bite the bullet and get a new FF (not integrated, so would mean costs involved in getting rid of the cabinet it is in and tiling the floor under it assuming it wasn't tiled before the FF went in) - and we may as well get one we really like rather than just any old one, the one we have seen we like is around £400. Although we have the money that we could spend on it, that money's meant to be put aside for seeing us through my maternity leave which starts in 6 weeks.

However I think although we don't like it that much, we'd not have looked at replacing it just for the sake of it, and even if it costs £150 or so to get it fixed, then it's got to be better than shelling out for a new unit and we can look at that when I am back at work next year and earning again.

So who is right? WWYD?

What about leaving the cabinet and putting shelves in and make it a tall larder. My parents did this and moved the FF. Its great for storage of cereals/tins etc etc

We couldn't do that as then we'd have nowhere to put the FF! ?

I would bite the bullet and just replace it - I'd be scunnered to spend £150 quid on it, and then to find it needed further work in a few months time. Integrated appliances can be a right PITA.

We've had one fixed before just for another bit to break a couple of months later - an engineer friend said that normally happens and buying a new one is the best option.

What about buying a new but 2nd hand one? you can often get real bargains in your local paper or flea bay where the guarantee is even still in place.

I think I would but the new one and actually a cheap one is still going to cost you almost 400 pounds so I would think that it would be better to buy what you want and spend just a little bit more than buy a cheap one and replace it before it goes wrong or be willing it to go wrong so you can buy the one you like!!

I would be tempted to buy the new one. If you spent £150 on it only for it to break again in a couple of months you would end up wasting money anyway. At least with a brand new one you are guaranteed not to have to spend any more money on fridge freezers for a while.

? all. So Mr R was right, who'd ever have thunk it? ?

So, how much faff is it likely to be to haul out the cabinet for an integrated FF ?

Don't get an integrated FF. Well not one like ours anyway, it's shyte. I'd never have chosen it if it wasn't already in place. At least our old FF was fcuked long before we moved house and we just chucked it when we moved, so it's not like we sacrificed a good one for a rubbish one.
