Humanist ceremony - anyone doing/done this?

Gnashalou, 8 September, 2010 at 23:17 Posted on Planning 0 4

Me and my h2b are not religious so our only option really is a civil wedding, however, alot of venues I've been looking at only cater for religious or humanist ceremonies. I have read up on humanist ceremonies and quite like the idea, but was wondering if anyone has been to one or planning one?

We covered a humanist ceremony a few years ago and it was really lovely. The bride & groom did the official bit at a registry office in the morning, then in the afternoon they had the humanist ceremony in a beautiful old building, and one of their friends conducted it all.

We are and as it is in scotland it is legally binding so no need for registry office, our registrar seems lovely and makes all the ceremonys really personal! x

We considered it when we were looking at having a Cornwall wedding and couldn't afford the licensed venues and couldn't find a registry office anywhere near the potential reception places. Everything I read made them sound perfect, and we were fine with having to have a separate legal ceremony (probably the day before) too. The fees are quite high though - Anywhere from £300 - £800 according to the BHA website. That said, you wouldn't need to pay the venue for the use of their civil licence, so it should balance out!

There is a humanist society website so that should tell you all the fees but it is towards the lower end of what sammyjay said

I had a humanist ceremony and it was fabulous. We had got wed abroad and had this as our 'blessing' in the UK and did a handfast (as we had already exchanged rings) ... the celebrant was fabulous, it was a beautiful ceremony which we - sorry - I had a lot of input into the 'script' and its made absolutely as personal as you want about you and your H2B. We did a signing of a certificate half way thru' (obviously not an official one!) so it had all the elements of a normal wedding.

    Would absolutely recommend it.

I can't remember the cost - it certainly wasn't anywhere near £800 tho'!
