Hummingbird Bakery Cookbook - any good?

CupCake, 24 August, 2009 at 13:04 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

Hi all

Long time, no post on OT. Due to recent arrival, I've been spending a lot of time on BT. Hope you're all doing just fine and dandy.

Wondering whether anyone has the Hummingbird Bakery Cookbook and whether it's any good? I've heard mixed reviews, but trust the good judgment of Hitched to help me decide whether to buy it.

Thanks!

I have it and it is ok but i find some of the quantities a bit odd. When the recipe says it makes 12 cupcakes for example but i've found i can only get 9 out of it. I then had the opposite problem with one of the loaf cakes (lemon i think) and i couldnt fit all the mixture in the tin (same size as the one recommended!). Maybe its just me, i dont know. But the actual cakes do taste lovely, but i have had to mess around with the timings a bit as well.

Don't have the Hummingbird one but do have the Magnolia Bakery cookbook (another famous US bakery) which I've not found to my taste at all. Quantities are odd (American measurements) and don't seem to fit with what comes out. Also everything is too big, too sweet (I would previously have thought this impossible!) and has v long lists of ingredients. Maybe I am just too lazy.

Favourite baking book at the moment is Good Housekeeping's Great Cakes. Lovely recipes that work perfectly and look like the pictures!
