Hymn copyright

Does anyone know how you find out if there is copyright on the hymn lyrics and you need to get permission to print them in your order of service? ?

I just included the author of the lyrics at the bottom of the hymn.

    e.g

    Sing a song of sixpence

    Sing a song of sixpence

Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie

    Sing a song of sixpence

Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie

    Sing a song of sixpence

Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie

If you google copyright and the hymn title it comes up (usually on weddingguideuk.com or you can search on the site)

    for example jerusalum http://www.weddingguideuk.com

    copyright details at the bottom

The Priest hasn't said anything to us about copyright and has told us to include lyrics in oos so I assume it's okay? He just said we couldn't have cds due to copyright so I assume you'd be told if it's a problem. Surely the copyright police aren't going to find out! x

    This might help as well

    http://www.weddingguideuk.com/articles/wordsmusic/hymns/hymnsforyourservice.asp

    which says.......

    Copyright issues
Copyright exists in creative works such as hymns for 70 years after the death of the writer. During that period, it is illegal to reproduce the works in any form without the permission of the copyright holder (or their appointed agent). Therefore, should you wish to reproduce the text of a hymn in your order of service, you will need the permission of the copyright holder for which a charge of between £10 and £25 is usually made.

You will find details of the copyright holder at the bottom of each hymn's page, although many of the hymns are out of copyright due to their age.

Please note, you do not need the copyright holder's permission if you are only singing the hymns, since a wedding is a private function. It is only if you wish to print the hymn words (for example on an order of service) that permission is required.

I certainly didnt bother with who hyms were written by, but then mine were over 100 yrs old really sooo.....

PRS is prolly what the priest was on about also, having to pay to play a cd but tbh, who is going to know??? Cds are such a popular means for weddings and funerals now that its not entirely surprising that they will be used and maybe churches pay a little towards the PRS folks now at the start of the year....

think copyright and the likes only matters on tunes under 50 yrs old...or summin similar..
