Hypnotherapy.. any experiences? Updated

Fussy Galore, 1 December, 2008 at 20:56 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

Hello,

I have just booked myself some hypnotherpay sessions with a clinical hypnotherpaist to try and address

some of my issues around food. I am feeling very positive about it after a long chat on the phone discussing some of my issues,

I just hope it can address some of the reasons why I do what I do..

I just wondered whether anyone had done this and if so how they found it? I am not expecting some kind of miracle! in a looking into my eyes, not around my eyes look into my eyes and your under...... I am very realisitc and i know I have a lot of work to do..

thanks for reading...

Well I had my first session tonight and I loved it! my therapist was lovley, very nice and put me at ease straight away. Everything she talked to me about and explained made sense to me and she had a lot of things for me to take away to read, as well as a couple of CDs to do some self hypnosis.

Basically I need to be eating to work alongside my bodies natural rhythem so good breakfast and lunch and small evening meal.. this is completely different to how i normally eat ( no breakfast, sometimes no lunch and a huge dinner as well as supper!) So its a big change for me but I do feel positive about it.

She went through a lot of my past, my session was nearly 3 hrs and i do feel pretty knackered now but very relaxed. I will keep you all updated on my progress!

thanks

Unfortunately I didn't have much success with it, apparantly wanting to change is the biggest key to it's success, well at 8 stone over weight I certainly wanted it but it didn't work for me.

I think I went with unrealistic expectations though, I was hoping for a deep state of hypnosis, during which she would reprogramme my thinking and attitudes to food, however, I spent most of the time with my eyes closed thinking this is a total waste of money and time. I know they say you don't need to be deeply hypnotised for it to work but I just felt like a berk instead of relaxed and calm. Each session cost me £40 and I quit after 3 when she said nothing different to the Paul McKenna tapes I'd already used.

Let us know how you get on though, I've seen Paul McKenna work wonders with people so I do believe it can work

    Hello,

Thanks for replying and sorry it didn't work for you... I have a lot to lose as well..

I am really not expecting it to make me suddenly crave cabbage instead of crisps? although it would be fab! .. I havent seen paul McKenna stuff so I'm no sure what he does, The lady I will be seeing was talking a lot of sense IYSWIM, and she explained the changes I would need to make myself otherwise there is no point in doing the sessions ( its going to cost aroun £400 for the 4 sessions) but I have been contenplating a gastrict band but really really don't want to go down that route, I want to try everytihng else first... and I really think that understanding why I overeat will help me deal with it.

Thanks MrsTeeHee, sounds like you are gtting a lot out of it, I am feeling very positive about it. I have looked around and spoken to a few people on the phone and the lady I have booked is definetly the one I have felt the most comfortable with ( she did offer a meet first but logistically it is a little difficult) The price is slightly more than a few others but not worryingly so, and it comes with a couple of CDs to continue to use at home. The sessions are quite long, the first is 2 1/2 hours and the other three two hours each so I don't feel like I am paying over the odds..

Thanks for such taking the time to reply and I wish you loads of luck with your treatment.

I've had sessions to address anxiety, panic attacks and self esteem issues all with the same hypnotherapist and I can honestly say that if I hadn't had them my life would be considerably worse than it is now.

She really helped my confidence and I've virtually stopped having panic attacks. I went from only going to work and staying in the rest of the time (I was scared to leave the house) to going out clubbing and shopping in the space of a few weeks. It involved filling out a questionaire and an initial discussion with the therapist, then three sessions at her "surgery" (not sure what the correct word should be here) then listening to the tapes at home.

Definitely something to try but as others have said you do have to make yourself relax. If you sit there thinking it won't work then it probably won't.

Thanks for replying Dolly sounds like you have had some excellent results!

I know the hardest bit is going to be relaxing enough to take it in... I am a little scared I will not be able to do that.. ..

    Hi FG,

My experience of hypnotherapy is slightly different to your situation but still significant nevertheless I think. I booked in for a course of 'Hypnobirthing' when I got pregnant with my second child. This is a structured course carried out by a qualified hypnotherapist. I was a sceptic but I was also determined not to have a difficult time when I had the baby and had only been able to find positive reviews about Hypnobirthing both online and from talking to people.

As well as learning alot about the history and physiology of birth I was taught self-hypnosis, which is essentially very deep relaxation. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis and in the weeks leading up to birth I had to practice the relaxation (and the taught breathing methods for labour) every day. The hypnotherapy aspect of the course completely changed my outlook on being pregnant and my feelings about childbirth.

Essentially, I learned there was a very real link between positive thought and the physical outcome. This was proven for me when I had my baby but there are lots of others out there with a similar experience. Good luck!

You have absolutely nothing to lose, just believe in yourself and listen carefully to any advice you are given.
