Thanks Flora. Yes, I don't imagine it's a new thing, and must go on in lots of other places too. In my nievety I just never imagined that such an activity as this would be legal or so organised.

Thank you ladies I admit I was a bit worried about posting on such an awful subject as I appreciate some people might not want to know this goes on, but when thought how awful it must be for those poor animals I couldn't just ignore it. Like Hoddy I have no idea how successful these online petitions are but if there's even a slightest chance it will help then I had to do it.

Animal welfare standards (for farmed animals) were set by a European convention and apply across all European Member states (including Denmark).

That said I have no idea how or if this is enforced in Denmark and because the convention only sets the minimum standards the British (and other member states) standards could still be higher.

I had no idea this went on!! Holy sh1t!! I know you probably all know this but please don't think that regular Danes (i.e. like my friends and family) are into this sort of caper. There have been politicians in the past fighting to get laws against animal sex passed, why the hell Christiansborg have not taken this up I do not know. Am reading about it at the moment, will try to find out about the pig farming laws too.

Flora - it's the slaughtering of animals without anaesthetic which has been banned. The halal butchers here in Copenhagen are still in business.
