I appear to be on a water meter

Pittabre, 7 September, 2013 at 13:01 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

I don't know when it happened but the bill today is charging me as being on a water meter. Would they have just changed it without getting my permission or could they have just written to me telling me they were doing it and me not recieved the letter?

I had to request mine and they wrote and called half a dozen times to confirm they were coming and then to cancel then to reconfirm, then we got letters explaining rates ect.

Cant imagine how you cant have received the amount of crap through the mail I got.

Our water bill went from £52 a month on standard to £11 a month on water meter

    Hi Pittabre,

i think it all depends on what area and who your water supplier is. I'm in Peterborough and we've had one for about 3 years.

i think it's being rolled out across the country, but it's always worth checking with your supplier to see if they have made a mistake.

H used to work for a water company, just asked him and he said it is being rolled out across the country as being compulsory so whether you were informed or not you probably can't do much about it.

I'm just sat in the bath after a really long day at work and was just thinking "I'm glad I'm not on a water meter" (it's a very deep bath) read this and now wonder if Thames Water have done the same.

We have a water meter, I have a very deep bath every night ?. H can't believe that we pay less for 4 people's water consumption (we all shower/bathe everyday) with a meter than he paid when he lived on his own without one.

We're on a meter and love it. Once everyone is on it, will the prices rise I wonder?

We weren't on a meter in the flat and paid £250 a year, just had my first quarter bill through for the house and it's £55... not that much cheaper than the house?!

Mrs C - £250 a year?? WOW! Water rates down here are just over £1000 a year! Hence why my water meter at £30 a month is AWESOME!

You can use this calculator to see if you would be better off on a meter vs non metered charges. I have heard as a general rule of thumb that if there are less people than bedrooms you are better off with a meter.

I didn't realise they were rolling this out. Do they have to come and fit the meter then? I imagine they would

The meter is in the street where your pipe comes off the mains feed so they dont need to get into the house.

Normally its done in the pot in the footpath outside your house.

I do know that my H's nan has had to have hers fitted inside the house but I believe this is the exception rather than the rule

Wow, I thought my £25 on our meter was cheap! £11 a month is amazing! To be fair most of it is standing water charges and stuff.

We have one, loads cheaper. My mum had one fitted but it is in the house, as is ours. Her neighbour couldn't have one because of the way her kitchen is arranged so she gets a discount instead.
