I can't find a dress :( little rant NOW with Dress FLASH!

cookiekat, 7 September, 2011 at 13:23 Posted on Planning 0 77

On the verge of tears again today, try as I might I can't find a wedding dress.

I have been looking for months now, its quite simple I like wedding dresses on other people but I really dont like them for me to wear Smiley sad

I just want some thing simple and sleek, no puffiness, no diamante's or glittery bits, no massive trains. ...it seems to me that designers only make dresses for the princess look. I like Amanda Wakeley but can't afford Amanda Wakeley Smiley sad I tried a couple of dress makers but they are really expensive as well Smiley sad

Going to get married in a sack at this rate Smiley sad

What kind of budget are you talking? House of Fraser and Monsoon both have some lovely, non-poofy wedding dresses in for under £500.

Also, try dressmakers and tell them you're after an evening gown (in white or ivory or whatever you want) and they could be a lower price!

Ah Alison I have been exactly the same. I have bought a dress at the weekend, but I shopped around for 3 months, visited around 12 shops and tried on over 30 dresses! I am happy with the one I have bought, but I didnt get the overwhelming feeling of 'the one'.

I think all you can do is keep going! If you find a dress you love, have you looked or thought about second hand? MAybe that way you could afford the Amanda Wakeley dress?

You will find it, maybe you just need to take a break for a few weeks and go back with a fresh set of eyes, all the new collections seem to be coming out at the moment too.

Which Amanda Wakeley ones do you like? Maybe we can find something similar by a different designer?

I'm a massive fan of Alfred Angelo, and he had a few non poofy dresses. You should take a look at them. His 2011 range is lovely, 2034 is quite a simple design.

I've tried monsoon, first place I thought of but nothing I liked.

I tried some on at House of Fraser&Debenhams again nothing that grabbed me. I keep seeing everyone on here saying they found the one and whilst I am really excited for them Im so sad that cant even find a dress I like let alone "The one"

I have about £1000 for a dress, possibly a teeny bit more

    Where are you located?

I'm in Cheshire and my dress maker says her average is £1200. Depending on your budget she can help choose fabrics and styles to suit. If it's not a complicated one in pure silk with loads of embroidery and diamantes sewn on I would expect it to come in under this!

For a grand there are loads of dresses out there.

    Alison,

I've gone for this dress, it is an Eternity D3075, it looks nothing like the picture they have on their website and only has a slight brooch at the top of the dress and one at the side, also has a detachable one shoulder strap. And a bargain at only £600. Might be worth a look if you want something plain.

I've never heard of Datchet ?

Googling dress shops in Ascot now, I kind of assumed anything in ascot would be really expensive!

    Hi,

Probably not suitable, but I have Maggie Soterro Autumn Royale which I wore in March and am looking to sell. It is US size 8, but I am a size 12 and it fits (not sure what size you are). Google the dress and see if it may be suitable. It's completely plain, but has straps - again, not sure what style you are looking for.

Good luck in your search! x

    Hi Alison,

I know of a Wedding Dress retailer in Spencers Wood just off J11 of M4 called Village Brides - not sure what she has in terms of simple dresses but maybe another one to look at?? She says all her dresses are less than £1k.

Supernova in Datchet is supposed to be very good. Have you tried Jollifes and the Wedding Centre in Marlow - not sure of costs but will prob start with these 2 when shopping for my dress.

    Hi

I think we have very similar criteria and i found my dream wedding dress designed by Jasmine. It's not a well known designer (yet) in this country (v. popular in America) but a few outlets stock the dresses and they really are gorgeous and affordable. Mine cost £500 and has very little bling but lots of wow. Good luck!

    Hi,

    New here! ?

I fully understand how you feel. I thought I had found the one in Augusta Jones Ali. And it is a lovely dress, and she does have some lovely, more simple designs. Ali was beyond my budget, and I had to give it up (with a heavy heart!).

I was in panic mode as I only have just over 7 months left! So I, again, tried on lots of dresses in one shop. And I do like Alfred Angelo. Tried on different styles again, too. Totally radical and things I would have never considered!

And then I found her (or she found me!). And I am soooo happy.

I am sure you find a dress that you will love. Maybe do take a little break, do other things (also non-wedding related!) and then start again. You still have a little time so do not put too much pressure on yourself.

    Good luck! x

Or if you wait until January I know there is a dress from Dessy with a very similar back, in satin, no detail that is going to be released in the new collection.....?

No worries, I would keep your eyes peeled on the Dessy website in January then - there is a dress from Ella but it doesn't quite have the same back:
