I can't find a venue (Derbyshire) - fed up

Hugo Brambles, 23 October, 2009 at 22:21 Posted on Planning 0 26

Well, more to the point I can't find one that suits our tiny budget. The ones I like are hotels and as such you have to hire the bedrooms which make it so costly. I thought I'd found a really good one, only had 7 bedrooms and was reasonabley prices but they charge £1600 venue hire!! Every single penny we have got to find from somewhere, we simply don't have that much to spend on venue hire (which as I have said before irks me anyhow when you've already got to pay to hire their bedrooms, eat their food and drink their drink).

I think we could do with a function room/pub that sort of thing or somewhere where more than one wedding is held so you don't have a massive room hire/venue cost. I've searched and searched and can't find anything suitable. Bit of a longshot but I don't suppose anyone has any recs for North Derbyshire. Not Ringwood hall by the way!!

I'm in Shropshire so can't help too much but I know that most places that we looked around here only charged room hire for civil ceremony if you had bit the wedding breakfast and the evening part in the same hotel. There were a few exceptions where you have to pay for exclusive use (around 5k!!!). We have a hotel with 11 bedrooms and no charge for exclusive use. They do ask us to try and fill 10 of the bedrooms in which case our room will be free. The rates are reduced for our guests from the normal tariff.

Have you tried http://www.derbyshireuk.net/derbyshire_weddings2.html? just a suggestion, you never know what you might find!!

Wow that's a great deal you've got Jem, maybe I should move to Shropshire ? . Here we'd have to hire all the bedrooms out and pay for venue hire to boot.

Thanks Lucie, you share my pain. We're supposed to be getting married in Jan so don't have that much time to play with!

    Will check out the link!

Hugo I'm sure you've considered it but have you looked at a Sunday wedding, if thats an option they sometimes have a very big difference in price. Can't help at all as I'm in London but best of luck! are there any cute B&Bs or something that would do it? sometimes places don't advertise that they do weddings but if you ask they are willing to do it.

Yeah thanks 22tango, we're looking at Fridays and Sundays as they are cheaper but still not cheap enough!! I think we're in some sort of wedding hot spot in the Peak District unfortunately.

They look so basic though (village halls) they aren't easy on the eye no matter how much decor you do. Golf clubs I've looked into, none round here seem to do weddings but it's an option so will keep looking and maybe look further afield. I think quaint pub would be my first choice with accomodation as I'd like to stop over if possible (also I'll be nearly 6 months pregnant so wanted a room in case I wanted a little rest!).

Try some pubs. Find some with restaurants and conservatories etc and phone them and ask what they can do. A lot of pubs don't advertise they do weddings but they might let you block their whole restaurant, etc.

    No harm in asking!

Just spotted the Bently Brook Inn, Near Matlock they do weddings and you can stay over. Also there is the Old Poets corner in Ashover, dont know about weddings but they have a restuarant and have live entertainment and b&b, its worth a call i reckon

The Peak District is lovely we spend alot of time walking there and there are some fantastic country pubs, do hope you find something. Let me know how you get on.

Thanks H&S. I know the Poets, not thought about it for a venue. Not heard of Bently Brook though so will check it out! It is lovely here, I should be able to find something that doesn't require me to sell a kidney.

    Hi

whereabouts in north derbyshire r you? we are in chesterfield and similar problems.. a couple of places we found were olde house pub which couldnt do the date we wanted and also we have a family club called riverside that has a big function room.. we are due to visit it soon and our theory is we hire there and then anyone that is travelling can stop in the ibis just round the corner..

    hth

Hi Loopyjennie, yes we're near you! Don't like the Olde House for personal reasons, Riverside is bit working mens club I thought? Never been though so would be interested to hear what you think. Have you looked up anymore places? Where are you getting married at? I'm getting more dis-heartened as I go along, at this rate I don't think we'll bother or else the 2 of us will just do it somewhere on our own.

It is more of a family club than working mens and from what i remember it has a massive room and dance floor.. ive heard good reports of brampton manor and their prices are not too bad.. they also now have the fox and goose at old brampton which is a fab location however we decided it was too far out for all our friends that are travelling.

We are getting married at the registery office with very close family and friends and then the plan is to have a big buffet and reception afterwards so are more leaning towards the riverside as it is quite near the registery office and also the ibis..

What sort of things are you looking for? Where have you looked at?

I'm going to sound mega picky but I don't like Brampton Manor - used to go there a lot in my younger days and just not keen on the place. Fox I used to work at so not keen about that one either but have emailed asking for details and prices.

I want a charming, countryside type place ideally. Looked at Losehill House (Hope) and love it but mega expensive (you have to hire 21 bedrooms). Also like Shottle Hall (Belper) but very expensive venue hire, same story really with most places I've looked at ie The Maynard (Grindleford), Whirlowbrook (Sheffield), Riber Hall (Matlock), Ringwood no chance for personal reasons, and about a millon others I can't remember now!

As I say its just getting me down even thinking about it at the moment.

Yeah looked at those and discounted due to expense, location or just that I plain didn't like them. It's all right, just ignore me, I'm knackered, hormonal, stressed and that coupled with some bad news we've had this week means I'm a moody mare. ?

Hi i'm in nottingham so not that far away, we looked at ruddington grange golf course, it was really cheap, no venue hire cost and the food was really reasonable. there are some lovely grounds around it for the photos.

maybe you could look at other golf courses nearer you if ruddington is too far.

    hope this helps

Thanks guys. Chatsworth was mega bucks and I seem to think if I remember they (and Bolsover) don't do weddings in Dec, Jan & Feb? Not heard of the Sheff hotel so will check that out and maybe get a list from the registrar too!

Thanks for golf course link - looks really nice but a bit too far for us I'm afraid.

    Hi hugo -

I don't know the area at all so I'm just throwing some thoughts at you... have you got any University campuses/houses, council houses (in london the council sometimes owns Manors and it can be cheeper), national trust?

if all else fails I would consider putting an advert out maybe (thinking outside the box) ?

Thank you all! Will have a look at some more golf clubs, the ones I'd tried didn't seem to (or at least didn't advertise they did on the website). Thanks for the list. Oooh I love that Norfolk Arms pub, looks really nice and cosy. Does it have nice views do you know? I think we've driven past it on the way to S41 (I think thats the name of it?) restaurant.

    ???
